Perhaps the Least Scientific Ghost Search of All Time - But Did We Find Something?

That speck to the left - a spirit or, well, just a speck?
What do a little boy named Jacob, a Native American known as Princess Angeline and Seattle business pioneer Frank Goodwin have in common?

They're dead.

Yet they still make occasional appearances at the city's famed Pike Place Market, founded in 1907 and the oldest farmers market in the country.

The New York Times Weighs in on 'Torchwood' and 'the True Awfulness of Immortality'

We frequently link to little-known blogs and websites to spread the word on Dr. Who and all things related to science fiction, comic books and the like. Today, we're going to raise the conversation a level - or several levels, depending on your point of view - and refer to The Old Gray Lady of newspaper journalism herself, the New York Times.

In the Sunday Review, the Times published an opinion piece about "Torchwood: Miracle Day" entitled "Imagining the Downside of Immortality." It was written by Stephen Cave, author of the upcoming book "Immortality: The Quest to Live Forever and How It Drives Civilization." Yeah, you could say this is a step above our usual "Where Are Superman's Pants?" posts.

DCnU Justice League #1 Comic Book Review (Spoilers)

Here it is.  The most anticipated comic book of 2011 DC Comics The New 52's Justice League.  So anticipated that retailers put the book on sale during a midnight madness campaign.  Pretty cool.  So was it worth the hype or was it another failed attempt by

Where are Superman's pants? New photos of Henry Cavill in costume for "Man of Steel"

One of the early controversies surrounding pictures from the filming of "Man of Steel" is the loss of the trademark trunks on Henry Cavill's Superman uniform. The latest photos, courtesy of "Kal-El.9859" and "wacots," have been posted at SuperHero

And where's the cape in these shots?

Personally, I am more bothered by the general appearance of the uniform. It looks like he has been dressed in blue Saran Wrap.

Avengers Assemble on New Poster

What? You haven't seen enough early promotion for "The Avengers"? Well, here's the latest poster from the movie, scheduled for release so many months from now that not even diehard fans are lining up at the theaters yet ... that we know of. Still, it's pretty cool.

What I Want To See In The New DCnU

Here we are on the 31st of August and the new DCnU has debuted with Justice League # 1 by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee.  So I took the time and thought about it after doing some reading elsewhere about the same topic and came up with my own short list of what I would like to see in the new DCnU.

Captain Planet Parody With Iron Man's Don Cheadle

It appears Don Cheadle and some other familiar actors have made a parody of the 90's cartoon Captain Planet. It's pretty funny.

Star Wars Blu Ray Changes - NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Spoilers if you want to watch the Blu-ray release not knowing anything.

Okay, perhaps you have heard about some of the changes happening this time around for the upcoming Blu-ray release of Star Wars.  The funky Yoda in Episode 1 is being CG'd to look more like he did in episode 2&3.  Great.  They are also brightening some of the Light Saber effects - good.  Now there are some new ones -

The Ewoks will blink..... okay, that is fine, if not a little distracting cause I know we will all be looking at the eyes and nothing else through the first viewing.

Next we have, well, here is a link to the changes.

The Darth Vader moment when he picks up the Emperor is perhaps one of my favorite moments in "Return of the Jedi" and this is really not good.  It sounds odd and we already had an annoying "NOOOOOOOOO!!" in Episode 3.  Vade'rs silence is much more potent in my opinion.

The Kenobi sound to scare of the Raiders starts off sounding like some creature is getting goosed.

DC Announces The Return Of The Justice Society

But what version?  It was announced this weekend at Fan Expo Canada that James Robinson will be writing a new Justice Society book and that it will be based on Earth 2.  It was announced during  DC's  New 52 Panel held by Dan DiDio.  He teased the annoucement by stating.

"Should we tease?"  asked O.M.A.C. co-writer and DC co-publisher DiDio. The rest agreed, and James Robinson confirmed that he is working on a new Justice Society project with artist Nicola Scott, and that the parallel world Earth-2 will make a return. The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.

"We don't want them to just be cameos and then forgotten," DiDio said. "We've waited on JSA because we really wanted to get the details right. We were hammering out the characters as late as yesterday."

I'm in favor of bring back the classic charecters like in the 80's when they were in the All Star Squadron. But that is just me.  Here's hoping.

Let's Kill Hitler! - Doctor Who review (Spoilers)

The worst thing about the last episode of Doctor Who, “A Good Man Goes To War” beside the editing, story and over the top, grandstanding and loud, in your face dialog was the title of the next episode, “Let's Kill Hitler!” Would this episode live down to my expectations born out some mediocre stories of late?

The recent photo of Superman to have leaked onto the internet has revealed that the new Superman costume does not have the familiar red trunks.  My opinion I think it looks stupid but thats just me as I don't make movies or comics so I don't know what people want or what looks cool.  But I do know this.  Superman fans will be pissed off.

"I found myself completely [stoked] to see what I could add to their already awesome creative team," Eastman told GeekChicDaily.

Also coming soon: a new animated series.

Matt Smith Says He Is Leaving 'Dr. Who' - Sometime in the Next Decade

OK, the headline is a little unfair. We wanted to get your attention and couldn't resist the temptation of a little sensationalism. This is showbiz, right?

According to Meredith Burdett at www.kaster, the 11th Doctor recently told Radio Times:

“When I finish, I’ll be… well, I don’t know how old I’ll be, but by the end of next year I’ll be 29 so…
“When I’m 40, I won’t be playing the same parts. If people are going to employ me on the basis that I once played The Doctor, that’s up to them. If the part’s right, the money’s good, why not?"
Vague? Coy? Well, you didn't expect him to live forever, did you?

Speaking of leaving, we have a plane to catch.

Comic book writer Grant Morrison Discusses the Death of Comic Books, the Rebirth of 'a Bruce Springsteen Superman'

These aren't exactly "Glory Days" for the comic book industry.

Many superhero movies are doing well - "Thor," "X-Men: First Class" and "Captain America," to name just three. And many more are in the works - "The Avengers," Christopher Nolan's third take on Batman, a new Superman, etc.

The written word, though, is in decline. Sales are down. Readership is down. It's no secret.

In a matter of days, DC will relaunch 52 of its titles, giving makeovers big and small to the biggest and smallest characters in its universe. It's big. It's controversial. Is it desperate?

Esteemed writer Grant Morrison addresses these and many other issues in Rolling Stone Magazine.

Who needs Dear Abby? Now we have Ask Darth!

All of us are plagued by questions big and small. What to wear today? Will I get that promotion? When will I find my soul mate? How did that frog get into my living room?

Now comes someone with all the answers. Tuesday marked the debut of Ask Vader.

Go to the website by clicking above. Ask the Dark Lord anything. And he will answer. It's like a Magic 8 Ball for the Internet Age. Also, the more questions you ask, the better your chance at unlocking other facets of the website.

Grizzly Bear 1, R2-D2 0 (or, Where Is C3P0 When You Need Him?)

Depending on your point of view of the "Star Wars" universe, the Ewoks were almost as annoying as Jar Jar Binks or cuddly creatures that also happened to be resourceful warriors. Regardless, they never did anything like this to R2-D2.

Officials at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo placed the droid in a pen with Emmett the Grizzly Bear. Oh, they also stuffed R2-D2 with bear treats.

Alas, the Force was not with the droid on this day.

'Conan the Litigant:' Rights to Character Subject of Stan Lee Media Inc. Lawsuit

The new "Conan the Barbarian" movie opened to weak reviews from critics and a lukewarm reception at the box office. Now, the lawyers are piling on.

Stan Lee Media Inc., the company founded by Stan “The Man” Lee, is suing the producers of the movie for all of the film's profits and all future rights to the character. The company has been pretty much dormant since filing for bankruptcy in 2001. Like any dead comic book character, though, Stan Lee Media has risen from the ashes. One of the revitalized company's first moves was filing its lawsuit on Friday, the same day the movie opened.

As reported Tuesday by Scott West of
Lawyers for the company claim that all the company’s publishing rights, including those for Conan, which were aquired in 2000, were locked down and unable to be traded or sold until the bankruptcy was settled. The company claims that “the shares of Conan Properties and all other assets of SLMI were part of a bankruptcy estate and protected from unauthorized transfer by the automatic bankruptcy stay.”
Since the new film, which cost a reported $90 million, is off to a slow start, the issue would appear to be less about money and more about future rights to the character.

Paging Matt Murdock.

Dr. Who victim of budget cuts? 'Absolute nonsense,' Steven Moffat says

Don't believe everything you read on the Internet. That's according to "Dr. Who" head writer Steven Moffat. (We're reasonably sure he didn't mean our website, though.)

Speaking to the Daily Beast, Moffat responded to "reports of budget cuts being behind the BBC's decision not to air a full season of 'Dr. Who' during 2012:
Absolute nonsense. First of all, we are airing in 2012. The only thing that’s happening is that we’re moving a bit later...There’s lots of reasons for that that will become clear quite soon...It is certainly not a reduced episode count. Do you think the BBC would really let that happen? With an average audience of 10 million?…Doctor Who’s international profile is huge. It’s never been more successful. You’re not going to reduce a show like this. The opposite is going to happen, in fact.

Marvel Comics New Big Event "Shattered Heroes"

Following from their summer event 'Fear Itself" comes "Shattered Heroes" here's a quote about the series.

The war is over, and the warriors return home, carrying with them scars of battle, both physical and mental. Now the cost will be tallied, the casualties buried and mourned, the rubble swept up and carted away. But the damage to our heroes isn’t easily repaired, the wounds not easily healed Decisions are made, lives are changed—can shattered heroes find renewed courage to go on?– Tom Brevoort, SVP Executive Editor

Captain America upset that he's not in Captain America movie

Don't make Reb Brown mad. You wouldn't like him when he's mad.

Sorry, wrong 1970s TV superhero.

Reb Brown played Captain America in two forgettable TV movies in the 1970s. By forgettable, I mean if I ever saw them, I have zero recollection of them now.

Almost 40 years later, Brown is back in the news, courtesy of TMZ, because he is upset with the creative minds behind the summer blockbuster "Captain America: The First Avenger." He told TMZ that the movie's producers approached his representative about a cameo in the new film, but that they never heard back.

'Terra Nova:' Steven Spielberg takes the future into the past for the present ... think about it and it makes sense ... really, it does

The year is 2149. Humankind faces extinction. So scientists decide to colonize the past, sending people 85 million years back in time to reboot human civilization. An intriguing idea for a television series from British writer and actress Kelly Marcel.

Having Steven Spielberg as producer should give the show a boost where lesser names might have failed. Special prehistoric guest stars - think big, really big - who have been waiting around for work since the end of the "Jurassic Park" series can't hurt, either.

Tune in Sept. 26 on Fox.

Fright Night (2011) - Movie Review

This movie held only a borderline interest for me going into last week. Having David Tennant wasn't a reason for me to see this and certainly being a remake wasn't incentive either. The original was excellent and so this movie had a lot to live up to.

Mark Hamill goes steampunk in "Thelomeris"

This looks ... interesting.

Who Is The Mysterious Mels?????

The Internet is a buzz over this one.  This character will be seen in Let's Kill Hitler this coming Saturday and rumors have been buzzing.  So far we have her as the next companion, Rory and Amy's daughter who will regenerate into the River we know.  But one thing is certain so far is that she is credited as Amy's childhood friend.  Confused yet.

Who needs Starz? Episode 7 of "Torchwood: Miracle Day" is just a click away

Be cautioned, though: This is the bloodiest, sexiest episode yet. Seriously.

And it's damn amazing.

Oh, and this picture of Bill Pullman as Oswald Danes? He's not even in the episode.

P.S. I've been informed that some people are experiencing trouble with the link. All I can say is, it's still working for me. Last week, I had to download something called xvid to play it. We're all hesitant about downloading anything unknown, obviously, but the "Torchwood" pull was too strong for me. So far, no problems. Best of luck.

Thor, Captain America slug it out with, uh, guys dressed in special-effect suits

They say pictures are worth 1,000 words. If that's true, here's about 10,000 words as we watch Thor and Captain America doing battle on the set of "The Avengers" in the streets of Cleveland (a stand-in New York City), courtesy of Comics Beat.

Oh, and there's a video with the jump, too. Not sure how words that is worth.

Iron Man is about to get lethal.

The biggest change for the franchise is that director Jon Favreau, who helmed the first two movies, will not be back. Well, at least not as director.

Updated with bad news! Walter Koenig: 'You might see another Babylon 5 in the not-too-distant future'

The return of Rick Deckard? Director Ridley Scott working on new 'Blade Runner' movie

Multiple media sources are reporting that director Ridley Scott is planning a new "Blade Runner" movie,

Jen Chaney of The Washington Post, among many others, reports that Scott will direct a continuation of the 1982 original that starred Harrison Ford as a replicant-hunter on a near-future Earth:
It’s not clear at this point whether the new film will be a prequel or a sequel, or how it will expand on the dystopian narrative originally laid out in a novel by Philip K. Dick. But Deadline’s story says it will not be a remake, which should be a relief to those who feel a sense of extreme loyalty to Rick Deckard, the “Blade Runner” protagonist played by Harrison Ford.
Scott currently is working on "Prometheus," a prequel to his classic "Alien" series. Has he run out of new ideas or will he be moving these stories forward? Time, not Internet rumors, will tell.

Thanks for the tip, .

David Tennant and 'Fright Night:' the early reviews are bloody good

David Tennant plays a self-declared vampire expert in "Fright Night."
The doctor is back. Except this time he's battling vampires instead of Daleks.

The horror-comedy "Fright Night," a remake of the 1985 cult favorite, is about to hit the big screen with former Dr. Who David Tennant in the role of vampire "expert" Peter Vincent, originally played by Roddy McDowall. The film stars Anton Yelchin (Chekhov in the latest "Star Trek" movie series) as Charley Brewster and Colin Farrell as the vampire, Jerry Dandrige.

Synopsis For The New Superman Movie

I found this over at Aint It Cool News and hopefully it is acurate.  If it is it sounds ok but I'm still waiting for a Superman movie where he is established and has to stop a threat from the bad guys.  Exploring the origin and his roots is ok but come on they have done that before many times.

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone's imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question - Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as "Superman," not only to shine as the world's last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

Dr. Who 'Let's Kill Hitler' guest star spoilers - don't click on the Daily Mirror link or 'read more' if you don't want to know

Don't worry. We won't mention any names until after the jump. But the Daily Mirror is reporting:

Goodbye To The Original DC Universe

On August 31 DC Comics starts its reboot.  What most fans want to know is the regular continuity going to continue or is DC really starting from scratch.  Well I'm keeping my fingers crossed about keeping the existing continuity even in passing but as I think we all know that they are gonna build from the ground up and with the exception of origins we will be saying goodbye to 70+ plus years of DC Comics regular continuity and for this we bid a sad adieu.

Cleveland rocks with more explosions during filming of "The Avengers"

Day two of filming in Cleveland for "The Avengers." No, I won't be posting explosions day after day. But I thought these were exceptional. Michael Sangiacamo of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Captain America (Chris Evans) was on the scene, too.

The rules have changed, and the game is deadlier than ever.
