More Disney - Star Wars Details

Some more details about the deal from aintitcool.com

1) Disney now owns all Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and ILM (the company that once owned Pixar), as well as the trademark for "Android" or "Droid". Disney will now own all intellectual property rights with some distribution and licensing exceptions based on existing deals, much like how Universal still has the Marvel theme park license for a while yet.

2) Much was made of Disney's global licensed product and distribution reach making better use of LucasFilm licenses, with all emphasis on the $4.05 billion paid being relative to the value of the Star Wars franchise. For example, this would imply that any Star Wars (and Indiana Jones?) licensed comic books will now go under Marvel once the current Star Wars/Dark Horse contract ends, and video games would go through Disney Interactive.

UPDATE 1:: Bob Iger: "We're likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console. We'll look opportunistically at console, most likely in licensing rather than publishing, but we think that given the nature of these characters and how well known they are, and the storytelling, that they lend themselves quite nicely, as they've already demonstrated to the other platforms"

3) Disney plans to release a new Star Wars movie every 2-3 years starting in 2015. All of them will be in 3D.

4) Star Wars Episodes 7, 8, and 9 will be a trilogy. The treatment is done, is in "early stage development", and the movies are to be released every other year.

5) ILM will remain a studio-agnostic gun for hire. Disney does not want to change anything about how they operate.

6) Fox retains ownership and distribution of all existing Star Wars movies (until that contract expires...?). All future films will be distributed solely by Disney, unlike Paramount retaining partial distribution rights when Marvel was acquired. No mention was made of who now owns the Star Wars Holiday Special.

This leaves us with tons of questions.  Will there be a new Indiana Jones?  What about the planned Star Wars live action series? What will the next Star Wars trilogy be about?  And so on - very exciting news for sure!!

Lucasfilm to be bought by Disney

It has been announced today that Disney will be buying Lucasfilm for a cool $4.05 billion. Disney has been purchasing a number big companies over the last decade, including Marvel Comics for $4.2 billion in 2009 and Pixar for $7.4 billion in 2006. It has also been announced Star Wars Episode 7 will be released by Disney in 2015, with further films released every two to three years.

Mockingbird Lane: Pilot Review

Written by: @ElbowsMcGee

Mockingbird Lane is a modern re-imagining of the cult CBS sitcom, ‘The Munsters’ and developed for NBC by Bryan Fuller, who brought us such programs as ‘Dead Like Me’ and ‘Pushing Daisies’.

Russel T. Davies on Torchwood "Not Canceled"

In an interview this weekend on Graham Norton Russel T. Davies talked about the state of Torchwood.  Here is what the show runner had to say.

"I loved making it over there [in the US], and I would have carried on if circumstances hadn't brought me back to this country, so it's kind of in limbo for me at the moment," he explained.

"I'm not working on it at the moment. I'm only working on [new children's TV show] Wizards vs Aliens - when I get back to work one day, I don't know, it'll be old news to the BBC!"

"It's not officially. It's in a nice limbo where it can stew - those shows can come back in ten, 20 years time."

Well it sounds like Torchwood is not coming back anytime soon or if at all for the foreseeable future.

Red Dwarf X - Entangled A review by @cheezypeas

Rimmer: "What's that smell, has there been a fire in here?"
Lister: "A small one, but I put it out with my beer."
Rimmer: "For goodness sake Lister, that's terrible!"
Lister: "Don't panic I've got another one!"

This episode has been one that has been advertised a lot in Britain, so expectation was high for this one. As the series has progressed the team have got more cohesive and a lot more classic style stories have emerged. This one certainly promised to not disappoint.....

Elementary Picked Up For Full Season

CBS has picked up Elementary for a full 22 episode season.  The show has been doing extremely well (I've been enjoying it) in the ratings which prompted the pick up.  This is great news for Sherlock Holmes fans as we now have to completely different takes on the classic character.

John Simm Would Like To Return As The Master

At the Cheltenham Literature Festival John Simm revealed he would like to give another spin on the classic Doctor Who villain.  Saying he would like to make him more menacing and less silly.

Here is what he said in his own words.

“Russell T Davies had a specific idea of what he wanted him to be like. So I just had to do exactly what he wanted me to, and he wanted a giggling lunatic”   “I started annoying myself after a while”.

“There’s a new writer now and I’m sure his take on him would be very different so I’d be interested to have a look at it. I’d like to take the Master to a very, very dark place."

I would like to see a return of The Master and indeed a darker less sillier one at that.

Arrow Picked Up For Full Season

The one of the two shows that has caught my interest and have enjoyed full heartily has been committed for a full season.  Arrow has been picked up by the CW for a full season.  This is good news for DC Entertainment and for fans of super hero shows.  Here is the full press release.

The CW launched the drama in October, away from the clutter of the typical September Premiere Week, with the series opening to a strong 1.3 rating in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic and 4.14 million viewers. The opening marked the network’s best premiere since The Vampire Diaries and its most-watched telecast in three years.
“Our strategy of rolling out our new fall schedule later in the year really paid off for the CW on several levels, especially with Arrow, which was the network’s most watched premiere in three years and is one of the breakout hits of the new season,” CW president Mark Pedowitz said. “I’m proud of the quality of Arrow and I’m happy we’ll be able to share more of it with viewers.”The series held strong in Week 2, maintaining its 1.3 rating in the demo and declining a modest 16 percent among total viewers.

2013 Doctor Who DVD Releases So Far

The new Doctor Who Magazine has also announced the DVD and Blu Ray releases for the first half of next year.  So far this list isn't all that exciting and quite a bit disappointing.  The highlights is the release of the only classic release Blu Ray.  Spearhead From Space will be the only classic story released on Blu Ray as it is the only complete story shot on film. It will have a special 45 minute documentary on Jon Pertwee that will be worth the price alone.  Terror of the Zygons finally sees a release but not until June.  Not happy about that and not happy that you need to buy The Aztecs Special Edition to get the newly found William Hartnell Galaxy Four Episode "Airlock" that really sucks.  We do get a Rein of Terror release with missing episodes animate like The Invasion years ago but still no word on The Mind of Evil release yet.

Here is the full list with UK release dates.

7 Janurary: The Legacy Boxset
Shada (VHS Copy) plus 30 years in the TARDIS.
28 January: Reign of Terror
18 Feburary: Ark in Space SE
11 March: The Aztecs SE with recently recovered episode Airlock
25 June: Terror of the Zygons

Red Dwarf X - Lemons - A review by @cheezypeas

What a lovely pair they both have!
The Red Dwarf team have met many people throughout their travels in space, some more famous than others. Some controversial encounters such as meeting Hitler could have caused a lot of outrage. Luckily, the humour of the show has made certain sensitive situations light hearted and very funny.

Religion has also been a regularly revisited subject in Red Dwarf history. Again, great writing and brilliant delivery of the lines has made a sensitive subject very amusing without being offensive.

So it was only a matter of time before this guy made an apperance:

Lister: "Jesus!"
 So let the laughter begin!

NYCC '12 Recap - A Review of 4 Days of Fun

The main highlight of my weekend

NYCC the very initials stand for a smashing great time.  The one weekend in October when geeks and fans of all walks of life converge on the City That Doesn't Sleep for four days of comic book and entertainment and all things geek.  There was something for everyone.  A majority of all the main comic book writers and artists from a majority of the big and small companies were there plus stars from the Walking Dead and Arrow to name just a few.  Plus movie galore like Silent Hill and Carrie had a big presence at NYCC as the stars from both shows graced the palace of geekdom or the Javits Center as it's really called.

From October 11 to the 14th NYC was taken over by geeks and fine folk in costume.  Imagine walking down 42nd St and seeing a zombie or a super hero or one of the many anime characters.  It was indeed a cool sight seeing the mass hordes of fans walking down the busy streets of NYC. I have to truly say that there were some really cool costumes this year.  You can tell that the costumers were paying attention to detail and taking the time to making it right.  A great selection this year.

I had no complaints with NYCC this year.  I liked how they had the show laid out.  I thought having artist alley in its own area to be a plus as there were more artist and authors and the walk area was wider also to help accommodate the crowds. Putting the autograph area in its own area was another plus.  By having those two areas in their own area it left for more room in the main area for comic book dealers and companies to but their wears on display.  Plus it made for a hell of a lot more to see.

I'm sure that there must have been problems but I didn't see them.  I thought the autographs lines were organized and handled really well and the volunteers seemed to know what they were doing.  I really liked how organized the DC Comics booth was for autographs. Liked that they issued wrist bands for autographs for the bigger names.  It made the line easier as you didn't have to hang around the booth all day. Cause once you had the wrist band you were all set.

I really had a great time covering NYCC all four days and meeting with other members of the press and exchanging war stories and talking about our general interests in the geek world.  It was fun covering the panels that were a general interest for our blogs followers and talking to comic book creators. I met a lot of fans and had some pretty good conversations and everyone seemed to be having a great time.  Plus it was good to attend NYCC as a fan also.  I really enjoy NYCC and make an effort to attend this convention every year.  It is a professionally run show made to cater to fans of all ages.  Sunday is dedicated to kids how great is that.  NYCC is a show that I thoroughly enjoy  and will definitely be attending next year.

Agent Coulson Lives In Agent of Shield Confirmed

It was confirmed at the Marvel TV Panel by a video announcement by Joss Whedon that Clark Gregg will be the main star for Shield TV show.  Here is the quote.

 ”Phil Coulson, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Pretty cool news for Clark Gregg fans.  Agent Coulson will be back. But the thing is does this show take place before The Avengers movie or after. I guess we'll wait and see.

NYCC'12 Sunday

Sunday was kids day at NYCC.  A great idea by those who put on the show.  What better way to help the future of comics and geek stuff in general than to have a day devoted to kids.  Children are the future and encouraging parents to bring their children is a great idea and have programming geared towards them is awesome.  Hey Elmo was a guest and what little kid wouldn't want to meet the real Elmo.

Sunday for me was quick.  It was a day to look around one more time and make any last minute purchases.  It was a quick day for me as I left early and made the long trek home.  So enjoy the pictures from Sunday.  Plus I did make a stop before I went home and I do believe it is the hotel from The Angels Take Manhattan but I could be wrong.

Da Vinci's Demons Panel Discussion Audio Recording

NYCC' 12 Saturday

Saturday.  Saturday is the busiest of all days at any convention.  Saturday at NYCC is can be summed up in a few words.  Crazy, Crowded, Insane and all out fun and awesome.  Ok, so that is more than a few words but I'm sure you get my meaning.  The masses of fans were sleeping in the streets Friday night into the early hours of Saturday morning braving the coldest night in NYC since last winter.  To them it was all worth it.  To some it was an opportunity missed but for some 50 lucky con goers they were the happiest of them all as they scored autograph tickets to the cast of The Walking Dead.  Pretty cool as a majority of the cast was here on Saturday to kick off the season premiere of season 3 which airs Sunday October 14 in the USA.

I had the good opportunity to ask David Goyer a question in the autograph line.  It was really cool to talk to the writer of The Dark Knight Rises and the upcoming Superman movie.  I asked why they came up with Bruce Wayne faking his death and he answered that it was something they always planned on doing and thought it would be a different spin on the character and one aspect that has never been explored before.  In the same line I talked to Lara Pulver who played Irene Adler in Sherlock.  She was really nice and a lot more attractive in person.  She is overwhelmed with all the positive reaction from Sherlock fans and surprised about the following she has now because of it.  David Goyer and Lara Pulver were at NYCC to promote their new show Davinci's Demons which will be out next year on Starz and is co produced by Julie Gardner who was producer on Doctor Who with Russel T. Davies.

Geoff Johns- Aquaman, Green Lantern, Justice League Writer

Saturday was full of surprises as at the DC booth Greg Capullo joined Scott Snyder for a Batman autograph session.  That was cool. Surprises are cool as at that same table Talon co writer James Tynion IV was on hand also.  Saturday is a day of surprises.  The DC booth was really crazy and extremely crowded as they had a lot of cool stuff to hand out and lots of awesome talent on hand like Jim Lee and Geoff Johns.  Just a wonderful time standing in line and talking comic books with people who have the same interests as you.   It just a great time meeting new people and making conversation and that is a plus as you have to wait in line an hour before the signing starts plus you have to stand in line to get wrist bands also.  It is so cool to see the popularity of comic books and still seeing the paper versions on hand to get signed.  Take that digital downloads.

Saturday was a very exhausting day with lots to do and see and now is that time to see some of what I saw on Saturday.

Peter Davison Panel - NYCC - 2012

Caitlin Blackwood (Young Amelia Pond) Interview

Interview was conducted at New York Comic Con Friday October 12.
Special Thanks to Gene from The Doctor Who Store for setting up this interview.

NYCC '12 Friday

Tons of people piled in on Friday
Friday the day when all the people start to pile in.  The day that the con is open to everyone who has the appropriate pass. I'll say this the line of people waiting to get in yesterday was wayyyyyy longer than the line for Friday last year.  Makes me shudder what the line is going to be like on Saturday.  But Friday was a day for Doctor Who for me.  I met Caitlin Blackwood, Little Amelia Pond, at The Doctor Who Store  booth and got acquainted with again the 5th Doctor himself Peter Davison.  Yes I dished out the cash and got their autographs which in itself is a thrill but I really enjoyed listening to Peter Davison's panel also.

Friday was also Grant Morrison day.  The prolific writer is a guest this year and is a very entertaining person to listen to.  His panel was very lively and he answered all the questions no matter how odd the question.  In fact Grant Morrison seemed to thrive on the really weird and odd questions and seemed to enjoy them a lot more than the generic questions about comic books.

Friday also had a great selection of cosplayers.  In fact I thought it was really cool to see Fez's, Rivers, Ponds and an assortment of PhD's number 10.   Yes thats right Doctor Who was on display big time and it makes this long time fan happy to see how popular and how embraced by the younger con goers to take the time and make a costume and represent Doctor Who.  A well done job by all.

So far NYCC'12 is starting off pretty good and it's only Friday with two more days to go.  So enjoy some of the pictures from Friday.

'Superman's daughter' continues fight with Warner Bros.

Don't make him angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.
Laura Siegel Larson is telling Superman fans her side of the story. The daughter of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and Joanne Siegel has been embroiled in a long legal battle over rights to the character with Warner Bros.

As with many legal disagreements, The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog reports that the case has been messy and complicated. Larson won a court ruling in 2008 involving the first editions of Action Comics, where Superman made his debut. More recently, DC Comics, a subsidiary of Warners filed suit against Larson and her lawyer, Marc Toberoff, for allegedly "attempting to interfere with its contractual hold on the franchise," Heat Vision said. DC also accused Toberoff of fraud.

Larson has broken her silence on the case, issuing the following letter:
