Lost in Space on Blu-ray?

Lost in Space is getting the HD treatment.  Like any series originally made on film, transferring the original film to an HD format is possible and now Lost in Space joins the group of other series to go this route including Star Trek, Twilight Zone and Space:1999.

No official word as of yet but this HD test shows off the high quality that can be experienced for all 85 episodes.

The debate, as usual is whether to release the format in the original 1.33.1 aspect or the 1.78.1 "widescreen" aspect.  While the widescreen will fit in today's TV format and will give you a little bit more off the side of the screen, it will cut off a bit of the top and bottom as seen in this video above.  In theory the widescreen will work but often these shows used the 1.33:1 aspect to frame shots so you might see lights, cables and the edge of the set.  One suspects that these errors would be adjusted so they don't show in the new format but you will not be seeing the show as it was originally intended.  Star Trek did the right thing and had the 1.33:1 format preserved with its release.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary: Christopher Eccleston The 9th Doctor

First off in what will probably be a very unpopular statement I do not like Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor.  Don’t get me wrong I will watch his stories and do watch the ones I like quite frequently every year.  But I just don’t have much love for the Ninth Doctor.   Now this is not going to be a rip on Eccleston or I hate the Ninth Doctor rant but will be more of an appreciation for what he did in Doctor Who’s history and the shows very welcome return.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary: Top 5 Christopher Eccleston Stories

Top 5 Christopher Eccleston Stories

So here we are with the Ninth Doctor and his top 5 stories.  Since he does not have a lot of stories because he decided to quit after the first series I’ve decided to do his five best stories.  This list was easy as there were five that really stood out and well the others were just mediocre.  So here are the stories I think are the best of the Christopher Eccleston era.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary: Bad Wolf/ The Parting Of The Ways

Doctor Who:
Bad Wolf/ The Parting of the Ways
By Russell T. Davies

“I am the Bad Wolf. I create myself. I take the words, I scatter them in time and space. A message to lead myself here.”

The Doctor, Rose and Jack have been taken off the TARDIS by a teleport and dropped into familiar game shows of the past that are now housed on Satellite 5.  The Doctor is concerned that something isn’t what it seems especially if whoever it is is powerful enough to teleport them from inside the TARDIS.   The Doctor and Jack both escape their games but Rose is in trouble on The Weakest Link game and is in danger of being disintegrated.  Unfortunately they are too late and the Anndroid does the deed and Rose is dead.

The Doctor and Jack make their way to level 500 and Jack discovers the TARDIS in one of the archive rooms.  He also makes another discovery.  Rose isn’t dead in fact she has been teleported somewhere else.  The Doctor tries and figures out what is going on by talking to the controller.  What he discovers brings terror to him and to Jack.  Rose is on a Dalek ship and there appears to be an armada of them.  The Doctor must save Rose and defeat the Dalek invasion force even if it costs him his Ninth incarnation.

Doctor Who - Scream of the Shalka DVD Review

Doctor Who:
Scream of the Shalka
By Paul Cornell
Starring Richard E. Grant, Sophie Okendo and
Derek Jacobi

Way back in 2003 there were two Doctor Who things going on.  Firstly and the one most people remember is the news that Doctor Who will be returning to television being helmed by Russell T. Davies in a 13 episode series.  What a way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Doctor Who with the news that the show was returning and would begin filming sometime in 2004.  The other was the BBCi planned Doctor Who series of webisodes featuring a Ninth Doctor.  Scream of the Shalka was supposed to be the beginning of a new series and was all set to go but well a certain piece of news derailed it and Scream of Shalka would end up being a one shot and well it was new Doctor Who for the 40th but just not what we really wanted but that would come in a few years.

ABC is happy with 11.9 million viewers for the debut of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  This is the highest rating for a drama so far this season although to be fair, the season is really just starting.  It is also the best start in 4 years with ABC's V.  The big number is the 4.6 rating for the age range of 18-49.

Aliens - Eclectic Method

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary: Boom Town By @Paul_Bowler

Doctor Who:
Boom Town
By Russell T. Davies
Reviewed By Paul Bowler

"In the family Slitheen, we had no choice. I was made to carry out my first kill at thirteen. If I'd refused, my father would have fed me to the Venom Grubs. If I'm a killer, it's because I was born to kill. It's all I know. Doctor, are you even listening to me?"

Returning to Earth, the Doctor lands the TARDIS in Cardiff to use the energy from the Cardiff Rift to recharge the time machines engines. Mickey arrives to meet up with the Doctor, Rose, and their new travelling companion Jack Harkness. They decide to go for some lunch, where the Doctor notices a newspaper article featuring Margaret Blaine, a Slitheen who the Doctor and Rose encountered in Aliens of London & World War Three earlier in season one. Having believed that the Slitheen, who use special human suits to disguise their lumbering green bodies, were all dead, the time travellers set off to discover what Margaret is up to.

Margaret, who is now the Mayor of Cardiff, has special plans for a new nuclear power plant. She intends to use a sophisticated device called the extrapolator to cause a reactor meltdown, one that will open the Cardiff Rift, and provide her with the power she needs to escape from Earth. The Doctor and his companions capture Margaret, and the Time Lord decides that she must return to her home planet of Raxacoricofallapatorious, even though it will mean that Margaret will have to face the death penalty if she goes back.

The Doctor allows Margaret one last wish, a final meal, before he takes her back to her home planet. While the Doctor and Margaret go out to dinner, Jack returns to the TARDIS and begins to fix the extrapolator to the console to speed up the recharging process. Margaret and the Doctor have their evening meal, with the Slitheen making several attempts to kill the Doctor, but the Time Lord easily outwits her. She even tries to appeal for sympathy from the Doctor, playing on the fact that she as she will be killed if she returns to her homeworld. Meanwhile, Rose and Mickey’s relationship takes a turn for the worse after Ricky tells her that has been seeing someone else while Rose has been away and travelling with the Doctor.

"Gotham" A New Series Focusing On Gordon Headed To Fox

Gotham a series focusing on the early years of Commissioner Gordon before the arrival of Batman has been given a series commitment from Fox.  Bruno Heller who is the creator of the Mentalist will write and executive produce the series.  The series is set to focus on the early days of Gordon as a detective and the villains that would later plague Batman.  This is pretty good news considering that we might be getting a Flash series and with Arrow and Shield around it is looking good for super heroes to be having a major presence on TV.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary: The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances

Doctor Who
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
By Steven Moffat

“What's life? Life's easy. A quirk of matter. Nature's way of keeping meat fresh. Nothing to a nanogene. One problem, though. These nanogenes, they're not like the ones on your ship. This lot have never seen a human being before. Don't know what a human being's supposed to look like. All they've got to go on is one little body, and there's not a lot left. But they carry right on. They do what they're programmed to do. They patch it up. Can't tell what's gasmask and what's skull, but they do their best. Then off they fly, off they go, work to be done. Because, you see, now they think they know what people should look like, and it's time to fix all the rest. And they won't ever stop. They won't ever, ever stop. The entire human race is going to be torn down and rebuilt in the form of one terrified child looking for its mother, and nothing in the world can stop it!”

The Doctor and Rose are chasing a metal cylinder through the time vortex.  It is a high priority and The Doctor uses the TARDIS computers to lock in on it and follows it to Earth.  They land in London in the year 1941 during the height of German bombing blitz.  The problem is it will be difficult for The Doctor and Rose to find the cylinder as it is war time and the army is guarding it.  Rose wanders off and ends up getting caught hanging onto the rope of a barrage balloon as she was trying to help a kid on a roof wearing a gas mask.  She is soon rescued by the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness who knows where the cylinder is and wants to sell it for profit and wants to make a deal with Rose and The Doctor.

Meanwhile The Doctor is curious about the mysterious girl named Nancy who is walking around during the airraid.  She appears to know more about the kid with the gas mask than she is letting on and The Doctor is worried about what the kid is and can do.  Nancy tells The Doctor to go to the hospital and see Doctor Constantine. The Doctor arrives at the hospital and is shocked at what he sees.  He sees tons of patients that have the same symptoms as the kid with the gas mask.  Doctor  Constantine tells The Doctor that the epidemic is spreading and not to let them touch you.  The Doctor realizes what is going on and if he does not act quickly the entire human race will be wearing gas masks on their face.

Superman: Earth One Volume Two Review

Superman:
Earth One
Vol 2
By J. Michael Straczynski
And Shane Davis

After the great success of their first story in Volume 1 2012 saw the release of their next story in Volume 2.  Yes I know this is 2013 and in fact I did buy this book when it was released last year in November but have just gotten around to reading it.  I really enjoyed the first volume of the alternate take on Superman with a new twist to his beginnings.  For the most part the origin is the same but what we get is a new dimension on the struggles the man has with fitting in with humans and letting people close to him as an adult.  The second volume continues with that theme of exploring the man who is Superman and gives us a new version of a familiar foe to cause him some headaches.

The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons Wins An Emmy Yet Again For Sheldon Cooper

Creature At Bay - New Pilot by Bryan Singer

A new TV series, Creature At Bay is being worked on by producer Bryan Singer for the SyFy Channel.  Bad Hat Harry Productions and writer John Cabrera are creating a 90 minute pilot about the aftermath of a giant monster being killed off the coast of California. Sort of sounds like a prequel to Pacific Rim and the Kaiju - could be interesting.

Doctor Who:
Father’s Day

Rose asks The Doctor to take her back to November 7th 1987 the day that her Dad died.  She wants to be sure he doesn’t die alone like the way he does in the story that Jackie tells.  At first Rose gets cold feet and she just watches him die and asks The Doctor if she can try again.  Against his better judgment he reluctantly agrees and they go back to that fateful moment. Doctor Who 50th Anniversary: The Long Game

Doctor Who:
The Long Game
By Russell T. Davies

“And no one's going to stop you because you've bred a human race that doesn't bother to ask questions. Stupid little slaves, believing every lie. They'll just trot right into the slaughter house if they're told it's made of gold.”

The Doctor, Rose and Adam arrive on Satellite 5 in the year 200,000 which is during The Fourth Great and Bountiful Earth Empire.  They do a little bit of exploring and find out that Satellite 5 main job is to send information across the Earth Empire.   Lots of stuff goes on in Satellite 5 like how they do the information sending which is pretty strange in itself as the computer is interfaced from a chip they implant in you.  The highest upgrade has the info downloaded into your brain directly.

The Doctor is not at all convinced that things are what they seem as it is extremely warm on Satellite 5.  Plus what happens to those who are promoted to floor 500. It seems once you get up there you never return or seen from again.   The Doctor and Rose curiosity has been aroused and are determined to find out what the big mystery of floor 500 is.

BBC America Home Entertainment has released some details on their Doctor Who DVD releases leading up to the 50th Anniversary.  Unlike in the UK the North America Tenth Planet release has not been moved up to October.  The Tenth Planet and Terror of the Zygons are ones fans have been clamoring for and they finally get the DVD treatment.

This collection features a retrospective on each actor and their tenure as the Doctor, followed by one full story for each Doctor, including Earthshock, Vengeance on Varos, Remembrance of the Daleks, and Doctor Who: The Movie, presented in both widescreen, feature-length version and in its episodic, original format. This digitally re-mastered edition of the Doctor Who classic includes an extended cut of Episode 1; Audio Commentary with producer Philip Hinchcliffe, writer Robert Banks Stewart, production unit manager George Gallaccio, make-up designer Sylvia James and special sounds designer Dick Mills; Scotch Mist in Sussex, a making-of featurette; and much more.

His words are borne out when the base is invaded by a force of alien Cybermen. The Cybermen's world, Mondas, is draining energy from Earth – once its 'twin planet' - and the situation will soon become critical. This digitally re-mastered edition of the Doctor Who classic includes Audio Commentary with actors Anneke Wills, Christopher Matthews, Earl Cameron, Alan White, Donald Van Der Maaten, Christopher Dunham and designer Peter Kindred; Frozen Out, a making-of featurette; an interview with William Hartnell; and more.

Sherlock Action Figures On The Way

MTV Geek has broke the news about Sherlock action figures in development and claims they will be out very very soon.  My guess is that they will be released around the time Series 3 is aired.  They look alright and you have to remember that these are just the prototypes and hopefully they will look better when they are released.  Now that noise you hear is the Sherlock fans screaming in delight of this news.

75th Anniversary of Superman Celebrated with
Historic Display of Iconic Film and Television Costumes,
Moving DC Entertainment Beyond the Convention Floor

Spotlight Also Shines Brightly on Batman,
Neil Gaiman’s Return to Vertigo’s Seminal Series THE SANDMAN,
Green Lantern ‘Lights Out’ Crossover and Much More!

BURBANK, Calif. (September 17, 2013) – DC Entertainment, home of the World’s Greatest Super Heroes and the comic book industry’s most talented artists and writers, today announced a stellar program of New York Comic Con panels, signings, announcements and other events certain to excite fans of all ages, led by a jaw-dropping display of eight historic Superman costumes from the big and small screen in celebration of Superman’s 75th Anniversary.

With an array of costumes previously worn by the likes of Christopher Reeve, Henry Cavill, Brandon Routh, Dean Cain and Tom Welling – the scope of this epic exhibit will expand the publisher’s convention presence beyond the floor of the Jacob Javitz Center and into the building’s public entryway – making DC’s expanded footprint undeniable to convention attendees and the public at large, and making for a convention-wide

75th anniversary celebration of The Man of Steel. A star-studded panel honoring the Man of Steel
and discussing the beloved character’s many personifications, impressive history, and ongoing relevance within society and entertainment, is also in the works.

DC Entertainment will further put its stamp on this year’s convention through appearances by some of the biggest creative names in the comic book industry – including the writers and artists from Batman, Green Lantern and Superman family of titles, MAD Magazine and many more. Legendary author Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed SANDMAN series will also be a highlight as fans clamor for the first issue of

THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE, a centerpiece of the ongoing reinvigoration of the Vertigo imprint. Additionally, for the first time DC will host over 50 creator signings at an exclusive DC Entertainment area in the increasingly popular Artist Alley.

The largest English-language publisher in the world will continue to make its mark with a packed schedule of panels, and fantastic collection of additional appearances and signings, exclusive announcements and other events.

· As their epic BATMAN: ZERO YEAR storyline expands into the rest of DC Comics – The New 52 and BATMAN VOL. 3: DEATH OF THE FAMILY prepares for its October release, superstar creators Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo will share the latest insider’s view on The Caped Crusader and their unique creative process. A Batman panel featuring this “dynamic duo” and creators such as John Layman, Ann Nocenti, Peter Tomasi and James Tynion IV will be a convention highlight. Following this year’s show, Snyder and Capullo will be the guests-of-honor at a Q&A and signing for BATMAN VOL. 3: DEATH OF THE FAMILY on Monday, October 14th at 7:00 p.m. the Union Square Barnes & Noble in NYC.

· Set for release on October 30, Vertigo’s THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE will also be a convention highlight as Neil Gaiman returns to the iconic comic book series that launched his career. Vertigo will be celebrating its 20th year in publishing through panels, signings and more, casting a spotlight on the imprint’s horror, mythic fiction, and sci-fi titles – including the dark fantasy COFFIN HILL, the epic adventure HINTERKIND, and THE SANDMAN spin-off THE DEAD BOY DETECTIVES as well as the new series THE WAKE, TRILLIUM, FBP: FEDERAL BUREAU OF PHYSICS and more.

· Kicking off on October 2 and spanning across all GREEN LANTERN family titles throughout the month, the “Lights Out” crossover event will change the Green Lantern universe forever! Convention attendees will collect more behind-the-scenes knowledge on this ambitious storyline by attending the October 13 panel featuring creators Bernard Chang, Van Jensen, Justin Jordan, Charles Soule, Brad Walker, Robert Venditti and more. The storyline ties together every Lantern of every Corps who has ever appeared in any comic book – ever. Nothing is held back, and devoted fans will want to know more!

· Fresh off the release of FOREVER EVIL #1, written by comic legend Geoff Johns with artwork by the infinitely talented David Finch, as well as the unprecedented “Villains Month” unveiling of 52 villain-centric 3-D Motion covers from across The New 52, fans will get the chance to learn more about the FOREVER EVIL storyline (and all of the dastardly villains that everyone loves to hate) at the Justice League – Forever Evil panel on Saturday, October 12. Boasting a collection of DC creators that includes Finch, Ray Fawkes, Matt Kindt, Joe Prado, Ivan Reis and more. Convention attendees will also get a sneak preview of the all-new documentary “Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics,” which investigates the inner-workings of the most nefarious collection of baddies in comics history. Narrated by legendary film bad guy Christopher Lee, “Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics” will be released by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on October 25.

The Walking Dead Spin-Off

Here is the press release -

AMC READIES TO 'SPREAD THE DEAD'
NETWORK DEVELOPING COMPANION SERIES TO THE WALKING DEAD

ROBERT KIRKMAN, GALE ANNE HURD AND DAVID ALPERT ON BOARD AS EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS

New York – September 16, 2013 – AMC announced today that the network is in the initial stages of developing a companion series to its original drama series The Walking Dead, which premiered on AMC in October of 2010. The Walking Dead is currently the #1 show on television among adults 18-49. Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert are on board as executive producers, with AMC Studios set to produce. The companion series has a target on-air date of 2015.

“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said Charlie Collier, AMC’s president and general manager. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn't be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe,” said Kirkman. “The opportunity to make a show that isn't tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

In addition to Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Hell on Wheels and Low Winter Sun, AMC recently greenlit two new drama series for 2014, Halt & Catch Fire and Turn. The network today began shooting a new pilot, Line Of Sight, directed and executive produced by Jonathan Demme, and has a licensing agreement with Sony Pictures Television for a spinoff series of Vince Gilligan’s landmark Breaking Bad, based on the Saul Goodman lawyer character with the working title Better Call Saul.

Season four of The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 13. The Walking Dead is based on the comic book series created and written by Robert Kirkman and published by Skybound, Kirkman's imprint at Image Comics.

The Walking Dead season three out-delivered everything on television including The Big Bang Theory, The Voice, Game of Thrones, Modern Family, and almost doubled The Bible for the broadcast season for adults 18-49.
