Doctor Who - Is Jenna Coleman Staying Now???

Hold everything. It appears that Jenna Coleman isn't ready to leave the TARDIS just yet.  Apparently an article in The Mirror (Yes I know grain of salt) is saying that Jenna Coleman has changed her mind and isn't leaving at Christmas after all but sometime in the middle of Series 9.  If true it does help the reasoning for the TARDIS set at the Experience being closed for a while which would lead you to believe for them to be reshooting the ending.  But also there has not been any official word that she was indeed leaving at Christmas either. So far it has been speculation and rumor and time will tell in less than a month is she is leaving or not.

Star Wars - The Force Awakens Teaser

Doctor Who - Synopsis For Last Christmas

The BBC have released a short synopsis for Last Christmas the 2014 Christmas Special. This special looks to me like its going to be a bit like The Thing the movie from the 80's not the 50's version.  Plus don't forget Santa will swoop in and save the day keeping the story festive.

“The Doctor and Clara face their Last Christmas. Trapped on an Arctic base, under attack from terrifying creatures, who are you going to call? Santa Claus!”

Doctor Who - Series 9 Writer Possibly Revealed

Catherine Tregenna appears to be writing an episode for Series 9 of Doctor Who and if so will be the first female writer since 2008.  It was on her online CV and these have been pretty reliable information when it has come to the writers.  She has written for the Whoniverse before as she has written four episodes of Torchwood ( Adam, Meat, Captain Jack Harkness and Out of Time) along with her other work for DCI Banks, The Fixer, Lewis and Law & Order: UK.

Sherlock Promo Pic Goes Old School

Sue Vertue who is one of the masterminds behind Sherlock along with her husband Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss tweeted a few pictures yesterday.  The first was a picture of the script which is written by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat and well it is so far has the working title of Sherlock Special.  But what looks like a flashback to the days when Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke were Holmes and Watson.  I am hoping that they will be doing a story set in the later half of the 1800's when Conan Doyle was writing Sherlock Holmes. That would be pretty cool and I would like to see how Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman portray their characters in that setting.

Super Megafest To Double the Super in 2015

Lindsay Wagner meets with fans at Super Megafest.
You know a comic con has met or exceeded all expectations when you have trouble selecting your personal highlight from the show.
Looking for the Doctor, no doubt.

Here are a few of my nominees from one of my favorites, Super Megafest 2014:
  • Meeting and chatting with a fan-friendly Lindsay "The Bionic Woman" Wagner.

Doctor Who - Peter Capaldi Confirmed For Series 9

To those fans (well the 1%) who do not like Peter Capaldi's Doctor I have some bad news for you and for the 99% that do I have some great news for you.  Steven Moffat has confirmed to that Peter Capaldi will indeed be in Series 9 (as if there was any doubt).  He made that perfectly clear yesterday when they were promoting the launch of the Series 8 DVD/Blu Ray Box set. In an article in The Hollywood Reporter Steven Moffat was asked if he was returning and he said  "Yes, he’s confirmed,”

As for Jenna Coleman well Steven Moffat is not saying.  My guess is that they will be trying to keep that a secret even though Jenna Coleman has been casted in a new TV show. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens with Clara at Christmas.

Doctor Who - BBC Announce Peter Capaldi's First Series A Success

The BBC have announced that Series 8 of Doctor Who was pretty successful and the ratings were pretty good for Peter Capaldi's first series as The Doctor. Not only did it do well in the UK but Series 8 did really well around the world also.  Series 8 averaged around 7.4 million viewers in the UK and that is a consolidated figure adding in iPlayer and DVR recordings.  It did really well in the USA as BBC America had a 23% increase and in Canada on Space it went up 22% from Series 7.  Here is a quote from Steven Moffat on the success of series 8.

"We never take it for granted, but the miracle has happened again - the nation has taken a brand new Doctor to its heart."
So it is good news for Doctor Who and the new Doctor but more importantly the new time slot having the show in the fall rather than in the Spring when it was usually aired.  Hopefully the trend continues for the Christmas Special and for Series 9.

Doctor Who - 5th Doctor Box Set: Iterations of I Review (Spoilers)

Doctor Who
5th Doctor Box Set
Iterations of I
By John Dorney

The Doctor walks into the consul room and finds Adric and Nyssa trying to fly the TARDIS and land them at Heathrow airport in 1981 hours before Tegan has to catch her flight.  As with all things concerning the TARDIS flying her is harder than it looks as the TARDIS does not materialize at Heathrow but instead on a cliff edge on Fleming Island.  There is something odd going on at the island as it appears to be haunted and someone has gone to a lot of lengths to keep whatever it is on the island.  That is until The Doctor and his traveling companions Adric, Nyssa and Tegan stumble upon it and unwittingly set it free.  Now it’s up to them to prevent it from leaving the island and wreaking havoc on the main land.

Doctor Who - 5th Doctor Box Set: Psychodrome Review

Doctor Who:
The 5th Doctor Box Set
Psychodrome
By Jonathan Morris

After the events of Castrovalva Tegan is trying to get use to the way her life will be until The Doctor can get her back to Heathrow before her flights departs.  In the meantime Adric is showing her to her room that once belonged to Romana and informed her that she can decorate it anyway she sees fit.  In the meantime the TARDIS seems to have materialized underground and that has piqued The Doctor’s interest.  The four travelers head out to explore and soon the Doctor notices things are not what they seem.  For once the TARDIS is being carried off by what looks like savages from Earth’s past and there also seems to be four groups of inhabitants all different and each representing different times.  But that is not the worrying part as each group seems to be a part of the consciousness of The Doctor, Adric, Nyssa and Tegan.

Doctor Who - Peter Capaldi Interview From LBC

Peter Capaldi was a guest on LBC radio with Jim O'Brien and was there talking about what else Doctor Who and also promoting the Complete Series 8 Box Set.  It is a pretty interesting interview as Peter Capaldi talks about how his life has changed since he took on the role of The Doctor.  He also revealed that he will begin filming Series 9 in January.

Interstellar Movie Review

My take and theories about what the film was about and how it all makes sense, mostly.

By Ken Parker

I have to admit that Interstellar looked like my type of film from the trailers. With comparisons to 2001 A Space Odyssey, one of my favorite films of all time, I had high expectations for Interstellar. Having reservations about the length of the film, I had confidence in Christopher Nolan's track record with movies such as Memento, Inception, The Prestige, Insomnia and The Dark Knight. Going into the movie with high expectations is not always a good thing.

The following review has spoilers and is meant to be read by someone who has seen the film. I won't go into detail about the story, just facets of the script and what I thought worked and didn't.

BBC Children in Need 2014 Doctor Who Christmas Special Preview

Doctor Who - Big Finish To Release The Third Doctor Box Set

Big Finish will be releasing a Third Doctor Box Set next year in October.  But here is the catch.  they have sort of recast the Third Doctor with Tim Treloar who will be the narrator and provide the voice of The Doctor.  The Third Doctor box set will be in the same vain as The Companion Chronicles and The Early Adventures with the exception that one of the companions will not do the voice of The Doctor.  The set also stars Katy Manning and Richard Franklin and will contain two stories Prisoners of the Lake a UNIT story by Justin Richards and The Havoc of Empires a space tale by Andy Lane. Here is what Big Finish said about the casting.

“As with our Early Adventures, these stories will authentically recreate the world of the Third Doctor, while paying tribute to the brilliant incarnation created by Jon Pertwee. We don’t see this as recasting the Doctor - Tim is playing the narrator, who in turn performs the Doctor’s dialogue - but the effect is so convincing that Katy was constantly praising his work during the recording.”

Doctor Who - First Christmas Special Promo Photo Released

This was released yesterday by the BBC as we get our first of many promo pictures for this years Christmas Special.  Here we see The Doctor giving his famous glare to Santa Clause. Cosplayers take notice it looks like The Doctor will be wearing a hood in this episode.

Doctor Who - Did Michelle Gomez Let It Slip About Her Return In Series 9?

It appears we may not have see the last of The Master in the form of Missy which is a good thing as I really did enjoy Michelle Gomez as The Master.  It appears in the recent issue of Doctor Who Magazine (Issue 480 Out Now!) she may have let it slip in an interview that she will be back as Missy in Series 9 of Doctor Who.  Here is the quote from Doctor Who Magazine.

“Yes. Yes is my answer. I’ll be back, Can I say that? Am I allowed? If not... well, I guess we'll have to see how she's received..."
So is it a tease or did she really let it slip out?  We'll have to wait till 2015 to find out if Missy will be matching wits with Peter Capaldi's  Doctor again.

Doctor Who - Steven Moffat On The Master

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat answered some questions on whether we have seen the last of The Master.  The answer he gives suits me fine as that is how it used to be in the Classic Series and everyone was fine with that explanation back then.

"I always rather enjoyed how they handled this problem when the wonderful Anthony Ainley was playing the part in the 80s."
"He would get killed, definitively, at the end of every encounter with Peter Davison and Colin Baker. And then he'd turn up at the start of the next Master story with roughly this explanation: 'I escaped!' Suits me, I'm fine with that!"
"Supervillains don't die, do they? I wouldn't trust anything about that character's ability to lie down and stop breathing."

Universal Monsters Movie Universe

A series of new Universal Monster movies is in the works and the movies will be connected!  Taking a page out of the Marvel movie handbook, a plan is forming to bring a new series of movie monsters to the big screen starting with The Mummy which is slated for June 24, 2015.  Following this on April 21, 2017 another movie is slated.  Among the monster movies being looked at are The Wolfman, Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein and Van Helsing.  It is uncertain how connected these movies will be.  So far Noah Hawley (Fargo TV series), Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners), Ed Solomon (Men in Black), Chris Morgan (The Fast and the Furious movies) and Alex Kurtzman (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) have all been attached to the project.

Doctor Who - LI Who 2 Review: A Weekend Filled With Fun

November 7th to the 9th saw the second incarnation of the Long Island Doctor Who Convention as LI Who 2 promised to be bigger and bolder.  Well it sure was all that and it was a hell lot of fun also. Last year I had a wonderful time at the very first LI Who and was really looking forward to this year’s show.  What really got me psyched for it was that it wasn’t crowded and it had an intimate feel to it as you could talk to people and still see them throughout the convention.  To many shows will now try and get as many people as possible to attend their show and it is overcrowded and not that much fun at all.  Take NYCC for instance they averaged 151,000 for a 4 day show.  Good luck trying to talk to someone there and hope to see them again as that would be impossible especially with the size of the building they use.  Now this year LI Who bumped the attendance cut off a tad higher than the first year and also got more guests.  This did concern me that it would lose its feeling of being not too crowded and not as friendly.

'Birdman' Review: Look! Up in the Sky! It's ... uh, Well ... We're Not Entirely Sure But It Soars

Michael Keaton is haunted by his alter ego in "Birdman."
I am old enough to have seen Christopher Reeve's debut as Superman in 1978 in a theater on opening weekend. I attended a Saturday matinee with several college friends while nursing perhaps the worst hangover of my life following a fraternity party the night before.

What does this have to do with "Birdman"? Well, I recall that one of the taglines for "Superman" was "You'll believe a man can fly." In the case of Michael Keaton's latest film, a tagline for "Birdman" might be "You'll believe a man can ... um ... levitate? Fly? Move objects simply by pointing at them? Hear voices in his head?" All of these things? None of these things?

And therein lies some of the beauty behind a movie subtitled "The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance." Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has deftly crafted a film that offers its viewers their own alternative storylines. Is Keaton simply playing a washed-up actor looking for relevance? Or is he something more as he seemingly soars above the streets of New York City? Where is the real story taking place? You decide.

Yes, some mild spoilers are ahead.

Doctor Who - Death in Heaven Review (Spoilers)

Doctor Who:
Death in Heaven
By Steven Moffat

“You Win.”

After the big reveal in Dark Water that Missy was The Master we are now onto the second part of the series 8 finale.  Usually the second part of the series finales or series finales in general have fallen short and not delivered on the hype built up by the first part.   Doctor Who has been a good example of this most recently with The Wedding of River Song which was not all that good.  It seems in NuWho that the show runners like to go for the big gusto and try to cram a lot of stuff into the finales and that has always hurt the story for the most part even if the newer fans go crazy for it.  So did Death in Heaven fall into the disappointing category?

Doctor Who Season 8 - Was it bad or good?

Just a quick couple of notes.  First off, if you have any thoughts about the current state of Doctor Who and this latest season, feel free to comment here on on our Facebook page.  We are also planning on recording a podcast at our November 16 party at John's House.  Keep an eye on that posting.

This season has certainly split fandom down the middle, although I think most have been happy with it.  My review of the final episode not withstanding, I thought this season was very good but there is an interesting article here that really does a good job pointing on some of the flaws from this and perhaps the last couple of seasons that they think the show has made.

http://observationdeck.io9.com/doctor-who-what-should-be-improved-changed-for-series-1656592260

I agree with much of this.  I found this season to be mostly good but nothing great.  I really thought Clara had lots of potential but they wasted her character for the most part.  She still owns several of the best scenes in Doctor Who history from this season (best acted) but that is not enough to stabilize the season.  Capaldi is excellent but was handcuffed to the story arc and was not given enough focus.  I can't wait for him to be unleashed next season (hopefully).

Anyhow - more on this debate to come.  Enjoy!

Doctor Who - Christmas Special 2014 Teaser

Doctor Who - Death In Heaven - Review with Spoilers

By Ken Parker (who is writing this past his bed time)

In order to properly review this episode let me first give you a quick background of my viewings this season. I have enjoyed most of the episodes this season and have felt they have been more focused and even from the start. Peter Capaldi's Doctor has given the show a slower stability that appeals to my love of the classic series. I have watched most episodes more than once before reviewing and have been surprised that I have liked most of them more after the second viewing. This review is after one viewing and after watching it again tomorrow if I change my mind I may revisit the review again. I have one word for this episode – Awkward!!

Okay, where to begin. This story in almost every scene was uncomfortable for me on every level. There was so much that happened that did not seem to work or gel. Let's go -

The Six Billion Dollar Man Movie

Another attempt at a Six Million Dollar Man movie is in the works with Mark Walberg attached to the project as the lead.  The film will be The Six Billion Dollar Man due to inflation obviously. The film will be directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor).  Dimension is the studio behind the project that hopes for a release in 2016.

The Six Million Dollar Man starred Lee Majors and lasted 5 seasons from 1973-78.
