Official BBC Press Release

LOST DOCTOR WHO EPISODES

NEWLY RECOVERED FROM THE 1960s,

Now Available Exclusively on iTunes

New York – October 10, 2013 – BBC Worldwide North America announces that a stash of BBC master tapes from the 1960s featuring missing episodes of Doctor Who has been recovered in Nigeria, Africa. The BBC has re-mastered the tapes, and is making two stories, The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear, now available exclusively on iTunes (www.itunes.com/DoctorWho).

Eleven Doctor Who episodes were discovered (nine of which have not been seen for 46 years) by Philip Morris, director of Television International Enterprises Archive, by tracking records of tape shipments made by the BBC to Africa for transmission. Morris says, “The tapes had been left gathering dust in a store room at a television relay station in Nigeria. I remember wiping the dust off the masking tape on the canisters and my heart missed a beat as I saw the words ‘Doctor Who’. When I read the story code I realized I’d found something pretty special.”

BBC Worldwide has re-mastered these episodes to restore them to the fantastic quality that audiences expect from Doctor Who. The titles are available exclusively on iTunes - www.itunes.com/DoctorWho.

The first recovered story, The Enemy of the World, is a six-episode tale which first aired on the BBC in December 1967. The story features Patrick Troughton as both the Second Doctor and his antagonist (Ramon Salamander), alongside companions Jamie (Frazer Hines) and Victoria (Deborah Watling). Episodes 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 had previously been missing from the BBC Archives, and were returned by
Morris.

Also recovered is the 1968 six-episode story, The Web of Fear. Also starring Patrick Troughton alongside Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling the story introduces Nicholas Courtney for the first time as Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart (who later returns as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart). Episodes 2-6 were feared lost, but now episodes 2, 4, 5, and 6 have been recovered. With episode 3 still missing, the restoration team has reconstructed this part of the story using a selection of the 37 images that were still available from the episode along with the original audio, which has been restored.

Beth Clearfield, SVP, Digital Distribution & Business Development says, “For many, this will be their first chance to watch these long-lost Doctor Who stories. We’re thrilled to partner with iTunes in bringing these missing gems back to new and long-time fans after all these years.”

On November 23, 2013, Doctor Who celebrates 50 years since the very first episode, An Unearthly Child, aired on BBC television. A number of episodes from the first series of Doctor Who were lost as a result of BBC Archive space-saving measures and there are still 27 Doctor Who stories that are missing or have incomplete episodes.

Doctor Who Episodes Found – Official News

The hoopla of the press event is over and after hours of a BBC imposed press embargo, the word is out – Missing Doctor Who Episodes were found!!!

The news is that the 5 missing episodes from “The Enemy of the World” and 4 episodes of “The Web of Fear” were returned to the BBC. Both stories already had one episode each and so the 6 part “The Enemy of the World” is now complete and “The Web of Fear” is now missing only one episode. Both stories are now available online through Itunes. No word yet on a DVD release.

In the 70's, the BBC junked the majority of their video taped catalog including most of the first 6 seasons of Doctor Who. Many had been returned with the work of fan Ian Levine but over 100 were still lost, until now.

Philip Morris, Episode Hunter as some call him is executive director of the Television International Enterprises Archive and had been hunting for episodes for years by tracking shipping records from the BBC when they sent films copies of the Doctor Who episodes to foreign countries. The trail led him to Nigeria where he found the films covered in dust. The quality of the film was excellent.

The press conference included viewings of one episode from each story and had Deborah Watling (Victoria) and Fraser Hines (Jamie) in attendance.

Patrick Troughton starred as the Doctor for both of these stories. Companions Victoria and Jamie were also in those two stories which aired back to back with “The Enemy of the World” ending on a cliffhanger that leads right into “The Web of Fear.”

“The Enemy of the World” is a story that pits the Doctor against the evil Salamander (played by Patrick Troughton in a duel role), who looks just like the Doctor. “The Web of Fear” is a sequel to “The Abominable Snowmen” from a few stories earlier. Not only do the Yeti and Great Intelligence appear in “The Web of Fear” but it is the first appearance by Lethbridge Stewart (Nicholas Courtney).

This brings the total missing episode count down to 97 but there may be more to come. Rumors for the past few months have stated larger numbers but press at the press conference event seemed to get the impression that there may be more episodes on their way back.

Doctor Who Fandom Waits.....

After months, perhaps years of rumors, hoaxes and misinformation, fans of Doctor Who hold their collective breath for what could be the biggest event in the show's history.  Sure, there are many fans who follow the current series and perhaps not so much the classic series but for all long term fans, we wait.  Wait for the announcement that we all hope is coming. One that could usher in a new chapter in Doctor Who history as potentially 20+ stories, not seen since they first aired, are returned to the fans.

For many, these stories will be the first time seen. But with telesnap reconstructions, the original audio recordings, novelizations and so on, fans have a better idea what to expect from these rarely seen stories. For some this will be the first time they see these stories as an adult, perhaps only remembering them as faint memories of their childhood.

Whatever the situation, it is certainly the start of a golden era for fans.  Sure, in 2005 Doctor Who came back in a new form and that has taken on a whole new life, but to finally see much more of the beginnings of the series has to be an interest to fans.

We may be jumping the gun here, but information points to the 90+ rumor being true.  This would mean that in a couple of years of releases fans of all ages can experience the first historical adventure beyond the prehistoric age.  We will see The Exploding Planet and the Horse of Destruction.  We will watch as the Celestial Toymaker first captures the Doctor and see Jamie McCrimmon join the TARDIS.  Imagine seeing the Macra and the Yeti defeated and Lethbridge Stewart's first adventure with the Doctor.  To see the very first regeneration and to witness the Power and Evil of the Daleks - what it will be like.... amazing.

We now wait. Online forums are silenced and believers in MEW and skeptics alike await word from the BBC.  Will we know it all or only a tiny bit?  The story behind the find is probably just as exciting as sitting down and watching The Enemy of the World for the first time (well, maybe not..)

Whatever the outcome, let us be grateful of what we have as Doctor Who fans.  If we are watching Web of Fear one day and Day of the Doctor the next, the 50th anniversary will be a truly magical time.

The announcement is slated for Thursday, possibly 9am London of two stories to be released online.

BBC Postpones Missing Doctor Who Reveal Until the End of the Week

The Mirror and Radio Times have both reported that the BBC has delayed the big reveal of the formally missing Doctor Who episode press conference until the end of the week.

But a BBC spokesman admitted today they were “not quite ready” and the press conference has now been rescheduled for the end of the week.

A BBC insider added: “With all the excitement in the last few days about the lost episodes we are really keen to get the information out, but there are a few delays.

"We want everything to be ready and for this announcement to excite fans so they will have to wait a few days longer.

“They have been waiting nearly 50 years for this, so a couple of days shouldn't make any difference.”

ARRRGH!!

Anyhow, online fans are furious and some are even thinking that the whole thing is a hoax.  Why the BBC has not pulled the story if it was indeed a hoax is beyond anyone's guess. There is still some reports from in the know people that seem to still deny everything - give it up already!!
