Great news for fans of the download only series Short Trips.  Big Finish has extended the range to 2017.  If your unfamiliar with Short Trips they are a thirty minute audio story narrated by an actor/actress from The Doctor's era that is featured during the month.  Next month is an 8th Doctor story narrated by India Fisher who played Charlie in the audio adventures.  They will also be getting a new producer in Ian Atkins who is the Subscriber Only Main Range Short Trips series.  He had this to say about his appointment.

"Director Lisa Bowerman and I have had some long planning lunches (one of the best things about a producer's role) and we have a very long wishlist we're now pursuing. I'm also delighted with the response I've had from the writers I've approached so far, both familiar with and new to Big Finish's Doctor Who ranges. It's too early to be sure or make any firm announcements, but I'm certainly planning a couple of proper Christmas stories and to explore some periods and characters in Doctor Who which may have been forgotten about – and not just with companions either"

SHADO News - The Worlds of Gerry & Sylvia Anderson - New Classic Thunderbirds, New Captain Scarlet, New Space: 1999 book review

July
By Ken Parker

We have a very exciting article this time out with so many things to cover. So let's get right to it.

More Classic Thunderbirds to be made -This exciting announcement of the Kickstarter plan to produce at least one of the specially recorded 60's audio adventures for Thunderbirds has reached its original goal and is now at around $200,000 and on it's way to it's 3rd stretch goal.  The project's plan was to produce at minimum one, hopefully three of the original audio only tales from the 60's TV show Thunderbirds and create a video production using puppets, sets and miniatures.

These short stories were created using sound effects, music and original cast member voices.  There were numerous releases that included shortened versions of some aired episodes but there were three original stories and these are being targeted for being made.

The Kickstarter plan has the blessing of ITV, Sylvia Anderson and the estate of Gerry Anderson. Project Producer Stephen La Riviere has already shown his interest in the product and has already worked with many of the original crew and others to recreate effects and sets for his Filmed in Supermarionation documentary.

I would go as far and say that if this Kickstarter is successful then there are other possibilities including stories from Stingray and Captain Scarlet.  This is feasible if the blessings continue to happen but what about a brand new interest in puppet series? If there is an interest in this and Jamie Anderson's successful Firestorm pilot, which is boasting similar practical effects and puppets, would we see new versions of any of the other series. Could a new original tale from Fireball X-l5 or Stingray see the light of day? Possible.

For now let's support this Kickstarter with it's three story plan.  Be part of this project, get your name on the disc and get a region free DVD or Blu-ray of the finished project!

Doctor Who - The Highest Science Review

Doctor Who:
The Highest Science
By Gareth Roberts
Adapted By Jacqueline Rayner

The Highest Science is based on the Virgin New Adventure book of the same name that came out in February of 1993.  The book was really good and highly regarded in Doctor Who fandom.   It was one of the few books during the early part of the New Adventures from Virgin that felt like a Doctor Who story but kept that cutting edge and explored new avenues for The Doctor that could not be done on TV let alone on a BBC budget during the late 80’s which was nonexistent.

I really enjoyed The Highest Science as a book.  It was clever and a bit complex.  When it was announced to be an audio adventure I had my doubts. Since it was a complex story and hard to follow at times you had the benefit of reading the page over again.  With the audio you have to try and go back a track and listen to it again and some of those tracks are longer than the part you want to listen to.   I did find this particular audio adventure hard to follow at times.  It seemed like they were trying to cram a lot into two hours and I did say earlier this was complex.  It might have benefitted The Highest Science to be a three disc story.

Classic Thunderbirds Adventures Are Go on Kickstarter!

A new Kickstarter has just launched which looks to produce one or more classic style Thunderbirds stories, utilizing older puppet and filming techniques combining with 60's audio recordings of three original adventures.

The original adventures were produced for mini records that included voices and sound effects from the original Thunderbirds TV series which was produced by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson in 1965. Three of these stories were brand new adventures and it is those three stories that producer Steven La Riviere hopes to make, starting with one title and if the stretch goals of the Kickstarter are reached, two more.  Riviere produced the Filmed in Supermarionation documentary that came out last year.  In the documentary several newly produced scenes were created featuring models, effects and puppets and it is this technique that they hope to re-create for this venture.

The Kickstarter features lots of excellent rewards including a copy of the first story on DVD or Blu-Ray, a photo book, trip to the premiere of the adventure and actual props from the new production. The Kickstarter site says it all so take a look!!

Doctor Who - The Crawling Terror Review

Doctor Who:
The Crawling Terror
By Mike Tucker

The Doctor and Clara arrive in the English countryside and come across something that just doesn’t fit with a day out in the country.    Giant insects seem to have taken over a small town and seem to be using the inhabitants as food.  From giant beetles to giant mosquitos and worst of all a giant spider seem to have the town in a frenzy.  What The Doctor and Clara are finding out if the mosquito bites you  you turn into a zombie and start menacing the town.

But that isn’t the only problem. Hidden in a factory is a mystery that harkens back to World War Two.  A machine that is responsible for releasing aliens into the England that was thought to have been destroyed during a German bombing raid.  The Doctor has discovered that it is now functioning and needs to find a way to stop it before an alien invasion destroys the Earth.
