'Dr. Who' makes a Top 10 list of mistakes by Syfy

Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper weren't good enough for Syfy?
Dr. Who and a television channel devoted to science fiction - a match made in Geek Heaven, right?

Wrong.

At least to the executives at the Syfy channel (then known as SciFi). Failing to keep the regenerated classic on the channel after March 2006 has made i09's "10 Actual Mistakes that Syfy Has Made Over the Years:"

When Doctor Who came back to life in 2005, Syfy seemed to have mixed feelings about it. Everybody expected Syfy to pick up the new show, since after all the channel had launched with classic Doctor Who repeats in heavy rotation — but Syfy dragged its feet for months, not airing the Christopher Eccleston episodes until March 2006. The channel frequently aired Doctor Who in first run with deep cuts to episodes, and never seemed to have much urgency to air them soon after their British airings. Finally, Syfy let the show go off to BBC America, which has propelled it to new ratings heights by treating it as a major event.

The Dr. Who snafu comes in at No. 7. You can click the link above for the rest of the list, or read the abbreviated version of What Were They Thinking:

1. Canceling "Stargate Atlantis."
2. Making Flash Gordon Non-Space-Bound.
3. Abandoning Friday nights as an action-adventure block.
4. Marcel's "Quantum Kitchen."
5. Making "Caprica" a "Battlestar" prequel instead of a standalone show.
6. Not picking up "Firefly."
7. Letting "Dr. Who" get away.
8. Not owning space opera.
9. The name change.
10. Canceling "Eureka."

And now, a barely related video, "She Don't Like Firefly:"

  1. Wow - this list is certainly accurate and telling. I have had a problem with SyFy for years. Before we got it around here it was showing tons of classic series. Shortly after Comcast picked it up locally those shows vanished to be replaced by "B" movies. The movie selection got worst with all the giant Crocosaurs and Sharktapi. The addition of wrestling didn't help at all. The channel is no considered to be low brow entertainment with only a series from time to time that gets a following only because there isn't anything better on. The angriest I ever got at the channel was the cancellation of Farscape.

  2. Totally agree. The movies are the worst. I'd rather watch Farscape or Firefly reruns than the laughably bad original films.
