Doctor Who "The Silent Stars Go By" Book Review

Doctor Who
The Silent Stars Go By
By Dan Abnett

Boring, complicated and not all that good are not the words that I would use to describe this book.  Exciting, very good and a great read are the exact words that best describe Dan Abnett’s Doctor Who book The Silent Stars Go By. Not only that but also this book heralds the return of The Ice Warriors. Yes, The Ice Warriors return to the Doctor Who universe and face off against the 11^th Doctor.

One of the highlights of my trip to NYCC was meeting Dan Abnett and conducting an interview with him.    For those who don't know Dan Abnett, he just completed a new Doctor Who hardcover novel, "The Silent Stars Go By."  This book features the 11th Doctor, Amy and Rory. It also heralds the return of the Ice Warriors.  His other Doctor Who works include the BBC Book "The Story of Martha," the two Big Finish Audio Adventures "The Harvest" and "Nocturne" featuring the 7th Doctor and for BBC Audio the 10th Doctor stories "The Forever Trap" and "Last Voyage".  He is also a part of the New 52 for DC Comics with Resurrection Man.   For a full list of the many books and comics that Dan Abnett has written check them out at the following link. Dan Abnett's New Doctor Who Harcover Has Ice Warriors!!!!!

I stumbled upon this at Kasterborus plus Dan Abnett told me about this book when I talked to him at last years New York ComicCon.  What he did not mention to me was that the Ice Warriors are in it.  How cool is that.  This is the second hardcover book that BBC Books is releasing following last years The Coming of the Terraphiles by Michael Moorcock.  Here is a synoposis of The Silent Stars Go By.

For centuries the Maintainers have worked. With no help from other worlds, they subsist on the food they can grow and that’s little enough. But their purpose, their whole life is to maintain the machines that will one day make their world as habitable as old Earth.

Life used to be hard. Now as their crops fail, livestock sickens, and the temperature drops, it’s becoming impossible. This year’s Winter Season Feast won’t be the usual celebration. It’s not a time for optimism or hope – and it’s not a time to welcome unexpected guests. The Doctor, Amy and Rory find a society breaking apart under the strain. Tensions are mounting, old rivalries are coming to the fore, people are dying…

And then the Doctor’s old enemies the Ice Warriors make their move. With the cold-hearted threat of invasion, the real battle for survival begins. Or does it? The Doctor begins to suspect that behind everything lies a deadlier, and even more chilling danger…

A thrilling, all-new adventure featuring the Doctor, Amy and Rory, as played by Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill in the spectacular hit series from BBC Television.
