Doctor Who Magazine 510 Cover and Details

Out today in the UK is issue 510 of Doctor Who Magazine which is a tribute to the late great John Hurt who passed away earlier this year.  Also an interview with the 10th Doctor David Tennant.

From Alien to Z Cars, DWM celebrates the extraordinary career of an acting legend who became the Doctor’s secret incarnation in 2013, including tributes from David Tennant, Steven Moffat, David Warner and Louise Jameson.

“It doesn’t need saying – John Hurt was one of the greatest actors who ever lived,” says Doctor Who‘s executive producer, Steven Moffat. “That’s not even controversial, that’s just a fact. I only met him a handful of times, but I can confirm the other thing that everyone else has been saying about him: he was also incredibly nice. Now, nice doesn’t seem like much of compliment, but you have to remember that this man was, quite rightly, worshipped by everyone he met. Worship has been known to go to people’s heads – but not John’s. If a man can remain humble and kind and warm as the world basically genuflects around him, then that is no ordinary man. The Doctor would be proud to be John Hurt – and for one very special day, he was.”

David Tennant shares warm memories of working with John Hurt on 2013’s The Day of the Doctor.

John Hurt’s Big Finish colleagues pay tribute to him – a special interview with Nicholas Briggs, Jason Haigh-Ellery and David Richardson.

Showrunner Steven Moffat answers readers’ burning questions.

DWM speaks Comic Relief’s co-founder Richard Curtis about his role in 1999’s The Curse of Fatal Death and writing 2010’s Vincent and the Doctor.

Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Sydney Newman’s birth, a feature on how he was frustrated in his attempts to be officially recognised as Doctor Who’s creator.

What did fans do before the days of home video releases? Before DVD, Blu-ray and digital downloads? DWM follows the story of preserving off-air copies of Doctor Who.

We examine how the visual effects of 1977’s The Invisible Enemy were achieved on a miniscule budget.

The original Master is up to no good in Part Three of our brand-new comic strip, written by Mark Wright and illustrated by Staz Johnson.

The Doctor and his companions lead a revolution against the memory-erasing Silence in this issue’s Time Team.

BBC Books to Release Three New Doctor Who Books Featuring the 12th Doctor

BBC Books have announced three new books featuring the 12th Doctor, Nardole and Bill that will be out in the UK on April 20th.  The three new books are Diamond Dogs by Mike Tucker,  The Shining Man by Cavan Scott and Plague City by Jonathan Morris. You can pre - order these books now on Amazon.

The Shining Man
By Cavan Scott

“Being scared is the least of your worries.”

The Shining Men are everywhere. You spot them out of the corner of your eye. Abnormally tall, with long lank hair, blank faces and blazing eyes. If they catch you, they’ll drag you away to who knows where. No one is safe. They’re on every street corner. Waiting. Watching. Shining bright.

Of course it’s a hoax. It has to be, right? It started as a joke, a prank for Halloween. Then it went viral. Idiots dressing up as monsters. Giving folk a scare. Silly masks and fright wigs. No one gets hurt. Because bogeymen aren’t real.

Until people start going missing and lights burn in the darkness. Burning like eyes. But help is on its way, in the form of a strange man called the Doctor and his friend, Bill.

The Doctor will keep us safe. The Doctor will stop the monsters. Unless the monsters stop the Doctor first...

Plague City
By Jonathan Morris

“We should leave. We definitely should leave. But... chatty ghosts!”

The year is 1645, and Edinburgh is in the grip of the worst plague in its history. Nobody knows who will be the next to succumb – nobody except the Night Doctor, a masked figure that stalks the streets, seeking out those who will not live to see another day.

But death is not the end. The Doctor, Bill and Nardole discover that the living are being haunted by the recently departed – by ghosts that do not know they are dead. And there are other creatures lurking in the shadows, slithering, creeping creatures filled with an insatiable hunger.

The Doctor and his friends must face the terrifying secret of the Street of Sorrows – that something which has lain dormant for two hundred million years is due to destroy the entire city...

Diamond Dogs
By Mike Tucker

For over fifteen years the crew of Kollo-Zarnista Mining Facility 27 has been extracting diamonds from deep within the atmosphere of Saturn, diamonds that help to fund the ever-expanding Human Empire. But when a mining operation goes wrong, a rescue mission must be launched to save a worker lost overboard, a worker who claims that he has seen something amongst the swirling clouds.

Something that can’t possibly exist.

When the Doctor and Bill arrive, they immediately find themselves caught between hostile miners, suspicious security guards and corrupt company officials as they face accusations of sabotage and diamond theft.

And below them, in the crushing atmosphere of the gas giant, something is starting to rise.

“Here on Saturn, it literally rains diamonds.”
