Being a fan of sci-fi, I have followed Neill Blomkamp' work, including his short subjects and absolutely love the look of his films. His 'realistic' look which often includes a poverty stricken Johannesburg contrasted with high tech weapons and technology, adds an unique signature to his films that people may either love or hate. The contrast of worker class and rich society was visualized in Elysium but has been present in all his films. His other themes include the alienation of different individuals, oppression and lack of communication. His latest movie Chappie has some interesting elements that make it different than his other films.

Elysium Movie Review (Major Spoilers)

Why do I always set my self up for disappointment? Elysium might have been my favorite movie of the year had I not actually watched the movie this past weekend. It has some good elements including Neill Blomkamp, who did a very good job directing and writing District 9 in 2009. I like Jodi Foster and Matt Damon has his moments. Sharlto Copley (District 9, Europa Report) is also someone I'd like to see more of in movies. So what went wrong?

Europa Report - New Science Fiction Movie

Magnet will be releasing a movie about a manned mission to Jupiter's moon, Europa, to look for life.  The movie stars Sharlto Copley (District 9) and is said to be a hard science fiction story that was developed with NASA's input.

It seems this movie will therefore be a bit more realistic than your usual Sci-Fi blockbusters of late.

The movie is slated for release later this year but one can imagine this type of film may make it to larger markets and art house theaters and not main stream venues.  Also it may show up on Video On Demand.
