Details on Doctor Who - Classic Doctors, New Monsters Vol 2

This month sees the release of the second volume of Classic Doctors, New Monsters where we see some of the classic doctors take on some of the villains from the new show like the Vashta Nerada. You can order this box set from the Big Finish website.

Night of the Vashta Nerada by John Dorney

Funworld was set to be the happiest planet in the galaxy. A planet of joy, of euphoria, of laughter and delight. Except construction was marred by reports of a predator and then, a few days before opening, all communication ceased.

Owner Georgia Donnelly is desperate to open the resort and has hired Amanda Steele's crew to find out what happened on the planet. They're the best. But even they might not be up to the task.

Joined by the Doctor and being picked off one by one, they slowly start to realise that something terrifying lurks in the shadows.

Empire of the Racnoss by Scott Handcock

When a distress call rips the TARDIS from the Vortex, dragging it back through time, it arrives in the midst of a conflict between Gallifrey and an ancient foe.

The Doctor, as ever, wants to help, but in returning a wounded combatant home, he becomes further and further entangled in a web of deceit and recrimination. A web spun by an eight-legged Empress and her minions…

The Empire of the Racnoss is at war, and wherever he stands, the Doctor is on the wrong side.

The Carrionite Curse by Simon Guerrier

Katy Bell returns to her Midlands home to find strange goings-on at the buskers fair. A witch trial in the 1980s. A bonfire ready to be lit...

Luckily, a colourful visitor is already investigating, and the local vicar, Katy's dad, is versed in tales of the macabre. Terrifying forces are on the loose, and the town hall holds a secret. There is black magic in the Black Country, and the Doctor has the name of his enemy on the tip of his tongue...

Something wicked this way comes.

Day of the Vashta Nerada by Matt Fitton

As the Time War rages, Cardinal Ollistra of Gallifrey seeks to create ever more dangerous weapons to deploy against the enemy.

When the Doctor stumbles across Synthesis Station, he discovers that the Time Lords have sponsored a project to weaponise already-lethal creatures. But in doing so, Eva Morrison and her team have unwittingly used a colony of Vashta Nerada with a very unfortunate history of humanoid contact.

The Doctor finds himself leading a desperate race for survival, in which the shadows may be the least of their worries…

Doctor Who - Harvest of the Sycorax Review

Doctor Who:
Harvest of the Sycorax
By James Goss
Starring Sylvester McCoy

The third disc in the Classic Doctors: New Monsters Box set sees the 7th Doctor taking on the Sycorax.  Now this was another monster from the new series that I wasn’t all that thrilled to see again as they were mostly one dimensional and didn’t seem all that interesting of an alien threat to warrant a return.  But Big Finish brought them back and did their best to try and make them threatening.  But I wasn’t buying it.  It just didn’t seem to work for me having the Doctor taking on the Sycorax and then doing his 7th Doctor manipulation act on them just didn’t seem be all that convincing.  But if you listen to this story you figure out quite quickly that the Sycorax are just a minor character in this story as the real problem is the drug corp Pharma Corps as they have developed a drug based on your blood type to help you with any ailment or mood.

Doctor Who - Judoon in Chains Review

Judoon in Chains
By Simon Barnard and Paul Morris
Starring Colin Baker and Nick Briggs

The 6th Doctor is no stranger to courtrooms. This time he is actually not the one on trial but the one coming to the aid of a very unusual Judoon.  Captain Kybo of the Nineteenth Judoon Interplantary Force is stuck in Victorian England and on trial for deserting his post and abandoning his duties as an officer of intergalactic law.  Captain Kybo is an unusual Judoon as he seems to have picked up the English language without the aid of his broken translator and has picked up on reading the books of the time and has even gone on to write poetry.   He does this in his spare time as he is chained up in a traveling circus and is being cared for by Eliza Jenkins who is also a performer of the traveling circus.

The Doctor finds it his duty to help Captain Kybo as he answered Kybo’s distress call and he suspects that there might be something else in play with Captain Kybo that may be influencing what is happening to him and there might be a bigger picture to reveal down the line.  So with the help of Captain Kybo The Doctor prepares to get to the bottom of this mystery of what can make a Judoon act not like a typical Judoon.
