Titan Comics to Release a 7th Doctor and Ace Comic Book

Titan Comics has announced its plans for a 7th Doctor and Ace mini series and it will be written by two of the writers who had a hand in the Sylvester McCoy era Andrew Cartmel and Ben Aaronovitch.  This three part series will be out in June.  You can read all the details about it in the press release below.

London, February 16, 2018 - This June, BBC Worldwide Americas and Titan Comics are excited to announce that the Seventh Doctor is back, in comics! This brand-new three-part comic series stars the Seventh Doctor, as played by Sylvester McCoy, alongside classic companion Ace (Sophie Aldred).

Hitting stores and digital platforms in June 2018 with a double-sized first issue, DOCTOR WHO: THE SEVENTH DOCTOR #1, written by Seventh Doctor script editor and showrunner Andrew Cartmel, and writer Ben Aaronovitch (Rivers of London). Doctor Who: The Seventh Doctor expands Titan Comics’ hugely popular and critically acclaimed Doctor Who comics line.

Actor Sylvester McCoy starred as the Seventh Doctor from 1987 to 1989 anchoring hundreds of novels and comic strips before regenerating in the 1996 TV movie. As well as this new comic, the Seventh Doctor’s era lives on in a tremendously successful series of audios from Big Finish. McCoy’s portrayal as the Doctor was, at first, a light-hearted eccentric who darkened into a secretive, mysterious, and cunning planner across the course of his tenure.

In Titan Comics’ new mini-series, an unknown alien intelligence in orbit around the Earth. Astronauts under attack. A terrifying, mysterious landing in the Australian interior. Ben Aaronovitch and Andrew Cartmel return to the TARDIS, on the 30th anniversary of fan-favorite episode “Remembrance of the Daleks” with The Seventh Doctor comics, and are joined by illustrator Christopher Jones (The Third Doctor) and colorist Marco Lesko (Robotech, The Ninth Doctor) to bring astonishing twists and turns to the lives of the Seventh Doctor, and his companions, with Titan’s new comic series.

The debut issue comes with four variant covers to collect: three art covers by artists Alice X. Zhang, Simon Myers, and Christopher Jones, and a photo cover by Will Brooks. The Seventh Doctor will also materialize with a back-up strip written by Twelfth Doctor scribe Richard Dinnick, with art by Jessica Martin (Actor: Doctor Who: The Greatest Show In The Galaxy, Voice actor: Doctor Who: Voyage of the Damned).

The third disc in the Classic Doctors: New Monsters Box set sees the 7th Doctor taking on the Sycorax.  Now this was another monster from the new series that I wasn’t all that thrilled to see again as they were mostly one dimensional and didn’t seem all that interesting of an alien threat to warrant a return.  But Big Finish brought them back and did their best to try and make them threatening.  But I wasn’t buying it.  It just didn’t seem to work for me having the Doctor taking on the Sycorax and then doing his 7th Doctor manipulation act on them just didn’t seem be all that convincing.  But if you listen to this story you figure out quite quickly that the Sycorax are just a minor character in this story as the real problem is the drug corp Pharma Corps as they have developed a drug based on your blood type to help you with any ailment or mood.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to put together a full season of Doctor Who?  What it takes to get to put four stories together and deal with the writers and the producers?  If you have, then a great book to read would be Script Doctor by former Doctor Who script editor Andrew Cartmel who spent three years working on Doctor Who.   Andrew Cartmel worked on Doctor Who from 1986 to 1989 for the entire Sylvester McCoy era.  He was there when they cast Sylvester McCoy right to the end when Sylvester McCoy did the voice over for the final speech in Survival.   Andrew Cartmel has written a book based on his notes and experiences of working on Doctor Who in a book simply called Script Doctor: The Inside Story of Doctor Who 1986 – 1989 and I have to say it was pretty interesting reading about what goes on behind the scenes.

“It's all over, Ace. My battle, all my battles, I've lost. I can only surrender.”

The Doctor and Ace are sitting and relaxing while they listen to a Jazz jam session when The Doctor’s alarm goes off.  It appears that he set it to remind him of a catastrophic event that would affect a planet but he doesn’t remember which one. It turns out to be the planet they are on Earth and The Doctor set it back in the 17th Century where we find Lady Peinforte making up a conncotion to get her and Richard to 1988 as that is where her astrologer has predicted that the comet Nemesis will crash back to Earth.  Lady Peinforte has the arrow and along with the bow, which a bunch of Nazi’s have, combined with the statue will grant that person ultimate power over everything.

To make matters worse there is another factor thrown in to disrupt The Doctor’s attempts to secure all three items and send Nemesis back into space, The Cybermen.  The Cybermen want the statue also to help their battle fleet, which is hidden from radar orbiting the Earth, to turn Earth into the new Mondas.  With this new X – Factor The Doctors game of chess might have to many players and it might be too much for him to save the Earth from the power of the Nemesis statue and the power that goes with it.  If the Doctor fails the Cybermen will win and be the true masters of the universe.

Doctor Who - Details For Nightshade

Out this month is another foray into the novel adaptions and this one is one of my favorite books from the New Adventures range.  This book came out in 1993 and was written by Mark Gatiss and this story is one of his best Doctor Who stories ever.  So  if you were luke warm about getting this audio adventure because of Gatiss you should pick it up it is a pretty good story.  As always you can pick it up on the Big Finish website.
