The Dalek Invasion of Earth heralds the return of the surprisingly popular Daleks.  They were so popular from their first appearance in season one that is was a no brainer to bring them back.  But how do you do it?  How do you bring back a creature that appeared to have been destroyed in The Daleks and could not leave the city because they could only move on the metal floor?  Well this is science fiction and anything is possible.

The first story of season two is Planet of the Giants which in itself is a pretty clever story.  Something went wrong with the TARDIS during dematerialization and the whole crew ends up being shrunk to a very small size. So much so that things in everyday life are a bit more of a danger to them than it would be if they were normal size.  Things like cats, fly’s, and worst of all insecticide that unfortunately Barbara got all over her hands and it is now slowly killing her.

While still on my quest to find alternative comic book series that shy away from the norm of the super hero stagnation I received another recommendation from @Spaced4SimonPeg and this time she suggested Hack/Slash.  Hack/Slash is about Cassie Hack. Cassie is that girl that survives the horror movie.  In her case it was her mother who ended up being the slasher and after she offed her mom she took on the job of killing slashers and saving potential victims.  She is joined on this quest of hers by her friend Vlad who wears a mask to hide his disfigured face.

First Cut is the first 3 one shots by writer and creator Tim Seeley and they are titled Euthanized, Girls Gone Dead and Comic Book Carnage. The stories are really good and if you like old time slasher movies like Halloween and Friday the 13th then you will be at home reading this book.  I really did enjoy reading First Cut as I found the stories to be fun and entertaining and in fact I read this in one sitting.   I liked how the characters interact with one another and how they have no problem taking out the slashers in a very violently way.  

My favorite of the stories was Comic Book Carnage mainly because it took place at a comic book convention and since I’ve been to so many, particularly the one depicted here that takes place in Philadelphia, that it had a certain connection for me.   What was funny were the cameos by famous comic book people who this particular slasher does kill.  Kinda funny once you read this and see who they are.

Hack/Slash First Cut is an excellent introduction to the world of Cassie and Vlad and the slashers they hunt.  If you enjoy horror and slasher movies then you will enjoy this book.  It is well written and takes its homage to the horror/slasher genre seriously and at times humorously as there are quite a bit of funny moments to go along with all the gore. So if you’re looking for something a little bit different and out of the ordinary then take a chance with Cassie Hack and Vlad and their stories in Hack/Slash The First Cut and get hooked on this comic book like I did.

Alphas Cancelled By SyFy

The Hollywood Reporter has reported that SyFy will not be renewing Alphas for a third season. The hour long show created by Zak Penn and Michael Karnow centered on a group of people who people with superhuman abilities who come together and solve cases that the government agencies can't solve themselves. Here is a statement from SyFy.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary: The Sensorites

The Sensorites is a story with a couple of firsts. It was the first story in Doctor Who's history to clearly state it was set in the future. It was also the first story to have a delay in transmission of an episode due to an extension to Summer Grandstand. Even in the 1960's sports overran the schedules.

Susan, Barbara, Ian and The Doctor discover a ship with a seemingly dead crew. Ian manages to 'resuscitate' them, and they explain to The Doctor and his companions that they were on a exploratory mission, and whilst in the 'Sense-Sphere' orbit were intercepted by the Sensorites who were basically keeping them prisoner on their ship by controlling their minds. They learn that the crew were put into a deep sleep by the Sensorities, but they never did them any harm and made sure they were fed.

The Aztecs is the second trip to the past for the TARDIS crew and this time it is to one of the more hostile or maybe barbaric in Earth’s history.  The TARDIS lands in 15^th century Mexico at the height of The Aztec society.  Barbara is mistaken for the Priestess Yetaxa who the Aztecs believe has returned from the dead and thus is a god.  Barbara sees her chance to try and save the Aztec people by trying to get rid of sacrifices against the advice of The Doctor.  Now they have a bigger problem as the High Priestess of Sacrifice Tloxol has his doubts if Barbara is who everyone thinks she is.

This Week's Banner

Our title banner this week is dedicated to a friend of mine who passed away over the weekend.  He was one of us.  One of those fans who loved so many different things from Sci-Fi and Fantasy.  Pictured in the banner   is just some of what he loved in movies, TV and comic books.  Dave Kraus was only 49 years old, way too young to leave this world behind.  He did so much in his life and embraced his interests with vigor.

In his last few years, after years of collecting toys and DVDs he found his true love, Kathy.  He passed away in her arms, surrounded by family and all that was most important in his life.

I lost contact with Dave in recent years and regret not sharing our life experiences: his marriage, the birth of my daughter and our continued love of our hobbies.  If you have someone that you haven't seen in a while or perhaps someone you had a falling out with, is it really worth not sharing time with them?  Even your own family, give them a hug and show your emotions because you never know when you will lose that chance.

Review For Doctor Who "Night of the Stormcrow"

The Doctor and Leela land on an island that has an observatory high above Mount McKeery.   The Doctor discovers that they are looking into space and observing something that they have no business observing at all.  Something The Doctor says is dangerous and that can end all life on earth and something which shouldn’t be here at this point in time.  It is the Stormcrow and its up to The Doctor and Leela to stop it and prevent it from killing all life on earth.

Night of the Stormcrow is a Big Finish subscriber’s only special release.  I have enjoyed these special releases every year they have done one and the one for 2012 is no exception.   I really enjoyed the concept of the story as it felt like a story from that era of the 4th Doctor.  It was a good story of morality as The Doctor is trying to get through to the scientist that what they are doing will harm all humankind and destroy the earth.  But in typical Doctor Who style they are too blinded by the glory of their own discovery.  

Night of the Stormcrow has a lot of good moments and some cool surprises in this 60 minute disk that makes the story very entertaining.  A very enjoyable story with Tom Baker and Louise Jameson perfect as ever as The Doctor and Leela and if you get a chance you should pick up Night of the Stormcrow and enjoy a trip back to that era of the 4th Doctor.
