Paul Cornell Pens A Unique Doctor Who Comic Book

Paul Cornell has written a Doctor Who comic book for IDW that has The Doctor arriving in our world where he meets Matt Smith along with a real life Whovian.  Here is a short description.

In this special one-shot story, a strange force flings the TARDIS and the Doctor into our own universe! Once here, the Doctor encounters a 10-year-old girl who happens to be a huge fan of the Doctor Who TV show. The Doctor grapples with being a fictional character as well as and a monster lurking at the girl’s school on the way to coming face-to-face with the actor who portrays him, Matt Smith!

The Doctor and Sarah Jane return to Earth and are greeted by Liz Shaw.  She explains to The Doctor that the Brigadier is acting weird and issuing orders that are very questionable.  The Doctor soon discovers the Brigadier he has been taken over by an alien called Remoraxian.  The Remoraxian is an alien that likes to turn planets into 100 percent water and since Earth is mostly water it is ideal for the Remoraxians to invade.  So it’s up to The Doctor and UNIT to once again save the world from an alien attack.

The third issue in IDW’s anniversary tale was one that actually felt like a story from that particular Doctor’s era.  It felt like it could fit in quite well with the Pertwee stories as it had action and of course a gadget made by The Doctor.  It even had a shoot first over reaction from a certain politician also.

What I did not care for was how easy it was to defeat the Remoraxian.  It wasn’t all that difficult and was really a letdown. All they did was tell them that nukes were launched against England and their base and they simply left.  Yep that’s it a big letdown to a story that was actually quite entertaining for the most part. It’s too bad that the story had such a ending that felt rushed and well it made me believe the writers did not know how to end it.

With that said the last page made up for it as we get a better glimpse of the villain and The Doctor sees who is taking his companions out of time.  That part was pretty intriguing as I’m sure people might be guessing who it might be.  So in all an issue 3 was pretty decent with a poor conclusion but a cool cliffhanger.

The Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe have landed at the famous Frenko Bazaar and the funny thing is they landed in a store that sells only police boxes.  While going through the shops The Doctor spots The Voraxx.  The Voraxx is an alligator looking race of aliens who specialize in illegal slave trading.  The Doctor plans on spoiling their plans when Jamie mysteriously disappears.  The Doctor and Zoe follow the trail back to The Voraxx store where there happens to be a transmat device in the back.  It leads to a ship where there is an auction for the slaves.  There the Doctor releases the slaves and finds a surprising ally to help them. An ally who hails from the planet Mars.

The second issue in IDW’s 50^th anniversary story for Doctor Who and this time it’s the Second Doctor who takes center stage.  I have to say the story and especially the art were a lot better in issue 2.   Well the art was done by Lee Sullivan who has done comic strips for Doctor Who magazine on and off since 1989 so he does have some experience in drawing The Doctor.  

I liked this story a lot more than I did the story with the 1^st issue.  This story had more of a feel of the Second Doctor’s era and had a fun feel to it.  I liked how the story kept a brisk pace and the inclusion of the Ice Warriors was a nice touch and added to the feel of that era. The story is pretty simple and it’s obviously building to something as like in the first issue the companions were kidnapped.  Sometimes simple stories are pretty good and as these stories are heading to something it works out pretty well.

So issue two is an improvement on issue one and the story is building up nicely and I’m looking forward to next month and the 3^rd Doctor’s entry of this story.

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who IDW has a released a story that will span the entire year and feature all eleven Doctor’s.  The first issue as you would guess is a First Doctor story.  Joining the Doctor is Vickie, Ian and Barbara and probably takes place closer to the end of Ian and Barbara’s time in the TARDIS.  The story takes place in London in the year 1868 and The Doctor is taking the two school teachers to the Royal College of Surgery to meet his friend Thomas Huxely the famous biologist.  Soon the travelers find themselves helping Thomas Huxely and the other professors in finding some missing students and proceed to head for the tunnels of Londons Underground railway.  Soon there The Doctor and his companions notice something familiar.  Vicki soon hears a noise that once bothered her on Vortis.  The Doctor soon realizes that the Animus has returned and has brought The Zarbi with him.  But even worse is how it ended up on Earth.

This first story was pretty good in setting up the story.  We were introduced to the mysterious villain at the beginning and get a little bit of knowledge of what his plan is.  Then you get a story that is quite simple in itself.  Nothing too complicated just The Doctor outwitting a few Zarbi and saving the day.  Then you get the cliffhanger and then you get the gravity of what the plan is.  Pretty clever and has me wondering how this will tie in with the other Doctors.  The writers did a good job of capturing the era of the First Doctor.  This story had the feel of a William Hartnell story and the characterization of the Doctor was spot on.  Can’t wait to see how they capture the other Doctors.

What I did have a problem with is that I did not like the art. At times it seemed like the characters faces were unrecognizable and well featureless. What I mean is that the companions had Charlie Brown faces.  The Doctor was fine and fully detailed all the time but the companions were not.  This bothered me mainly at the beginning of Prisoners of Time when the main bad of the story was looking at all the companions and I could not recognize at least one of them.  Needless to say art like that really bothers me and does detract from the enjoyment of the story.   But needless to say I did enjoy this story even with my problems with the art.  Prisoners of Time is out now and should be hunted down and bought by all Doctor Who fans.

IDW To Release New X - Files Comic Book

IDW has released a press release announcing the return of The X-Files to the world of comic books.  The new comic will be released in June along with reprint collections of the sporadic X-Files releases from 1995 to 2009.

The Landmark Series Finds a New Publishing Outlet in 2013

"Make It So " Doctor Who/Star Trek Crossover By IDW Comics

Bleeding Cool is reporting that there will be an official comic book cross over with Dr Who and Star Trek: The Next Generation.  This is pretty cool news as IDW has the rights to make comics of both brands.  IDW will be attending next weekends Gallifrey One Convention in Los Angeles and it is expected that an official announcement about the crossover will happen there. Tony Lee Is Leaving IDW's Doctor Who Comic Book

Tony Lee is leaving the IDW Doctor Who Comic book with issue 12.  This quite a bummer as I have enjoyed reading Tony Lee's take on the Timelord.  He has written for both Doctors Tennant and Smith and his last issue will be out this December.  He posted this statement on his Facebook page.

This hasn’t been an easy decision to make, but it’s the right one. I’ve been writing the ongoing, monthly comic for almost thirty issues now, through two Doctors, two show runners and two editors. Including  "The Forgotten"  and  "The Time Machination"  I’ve been pretty much writing Doctor Who on a month by month basis since 2008. He’s been to the past, the future, his own museum, he’s been body swapped, arrested, multiplied and won a penalty shoot out among other things during that time. And now is a good time to take a break and let fresher eyes take a look at the character.
I’m not gone, though. IDW have sequestered me aside to create a brand new Doctor Who mini series for mid 2012 with the remit  make it bigger than "The Forgotten", and I’m looking forward to talking about it more in the coming months.  

And Josh Fialkov, one of the best comic writers out there and a close friend of mine for almost a decade is a good man to take the baton and run with it. Anyone who’s been to the last two Gallifrey One conventions will know that his fan credentials are solid, and he knows his stuff. And I mentioned he was one of the best comic writers out there, right?But for now issue 12 is my last ongoing comic. When I wrote it, I knew that it was, and I hope I managed to give my run of the raggedy Doctor a solid end.

The new Doctor Who comic book will have an American writer Joshua Hale Fialkov.  His first story arc comes out with issue 13 in January. He posted this on his Facebook page.
