Marvel Vs DC - Suicide Squad Success, Fall TV, Doctor Strange

A few things going on in the world of movies and television related to that ever lasting war between Marvel and DC.


Suicide Squad - a Win for DC - Suicide Squad had a fair amount of panning by critics despite it being the best DC superhero film since Batman: The Dark Knight Rises.  The film for the most part got the characters right and had a fun story to boot.  I felt the movie was trying to hard to be good.  At times the moments you see on screen look like they would be extremely funny or full of great action but instead they seemed to fall a bit flat.  The intros to each character were forced and while I did enjoy most of them, none of them blew me out of the water.  Even Margot Robbie, who I expected to steal the show, was pretty good but not fantastic.  Will Smith and Jared Leto were also pretty good.  The fact that DC has created a movie with pretty good characters is a step in the right direction.  Apart from choppy storytelling and odd pacing the movie did not make any major mistakes like with Superman in his two films.

Suicide Squad raked in the bucks, over taking some heavy hitting Marvel films including Captain America: Winter Soldier.  So I would expect DC to follow suit with films that are more like Suicide Squad and hopefully they will fix some of the writing issues.

With the TV season ended and Marvel's movies raking in the money, I figured it was time to look at our imaginary Marvel V DC battle.  Some news, rumors and the build up to Suicide Squad.  Let's get to it.






Superman and Supergirl - in a surprising but welcome move, DC and CW are bringing the character of Superman to the Supergirl series.  After appearing in distant cameos and seeing the Man of Steel's boots the CW, taking over from CBS has decided to bring Superman to the series for at least a couple of episodes.  Tyler Hoechlin (Teen Wolf) will play Superman.  I think this is a huge move because in the past the movie and TV characters haven't really been that inclusive.  Often characters being used on TV won't be used in the movies and so on.  Obviously that will change as time goes on but perhaps with Superman making an appearance other characters like Batman and Wonder Woman have a chance.

Marvel V DC - Captain America: Civil War, Supergirl is Saved and Agent Carter is not

This imaginary battle between Marvel and DC felt like it could have gotten a lot closer this year.  After seeing Captain America: Civil War, I feel the battle is over.  Its as if DC is playing a game of cards with Marvel and earlier this year they showed their hand with a pair of Jacks. Nice. Then Marvel comes out and has a Royal Flush. DC throws their cards down and exclaims “What can we do to beat Marvel?” The answer, you can't.

Doctor Strange - First up - this -

Batman Vs Superman – Okay, this is it.  The all important movie that would make or break the franchise.  First off, how was the movie?  Well, it could have been worse and it could have been better.  There are quite a few nitpicks that I could go over but others have done a better job –

Overall I enjoyed the film and don’t think it was as bad as critics say.  I can understand some of the criticism toward the Superman character.  He is still not right in the film.  But apparently that is what we have so time to get over it.  Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot are perfect playing Batman and Wonder Woman and in the case of Wonder Woman, she is the best part of the film by far.  The worst part was Lex Luthor played by Jessie Eisenberg.  This was not Lex Luthor, more like the Joker really.  This was glaringly bad and if someone told me they hated the movie because of this then I would have to concede that point.  There is a lot to look past in the film for sure but there is a lot to like about the film.  I do like the dark tone and look of the film.  I feel that if they tried to tone this down a bit it would look too much like Marvel’s universe and so I am fine with it as it is now. 

Marvel vs. DC - Batman v Superman, Captain America: Civil War, Legends of Tomorrow, Jessica Jones and Supergirl

The imaginary war between Marvel and DC that I have so excitedly embraced has begun to step it up a notch with the coming of the Batman v Superman trailer.  Marvel is fighting back with Captain America: Civil War.  Meanwhile on television, it is mayhem.

Batman vs. Superman Trailer - Finally.

I would say that this trailer does a good job in keeping my interest in the film and while there was one OMG moment, the rest of the trailer looked just good.  There is also quite a bit of spoilers in there as well.  I am looking forward to it, of course but I am still worried that it will disappoint. 

Marvel Vs. DC - Fall TV, Zach Snyder, Wonder Woman and Spielberg

A fairly busy period for Marvel and DC.  With the fall season almost upon us and studios getting geared up for 2016 and beyond, there seems to be a lot going on.  As always we look at some of the conflicts between Marvel and DC but let's begin with some rumors.

Marvel Vs. DC - Daredevil, Hawkgirl and Superhero Fight Club

Daredevil enters the battle swinging – Marvel's Daredevil was released on Netflix on Friday April 10 and I have to say – what a shame. What a shame that this show is not on a prime network. I managed to catch the first episode and it is excellent. Taking place in the same Avengers Universe, Daredevil manages to remind us that it is part of that same universe in a very subtle way. There is no name dropping in this series. The main characters don't know the Avengers. This small scope series centers on Matt Murdock, who is taking justice in his own hands as Daredevil. He is a well trained fighter who happens to be blind but has heightened senses.

The opening episode has a great story and pace with incredible visuals (I love the color scheme). This series, all 13 episodes are available on Netflix now, from what I can tell, is as good as any of the other Marvel series and that is excellent.

Marvel vs. DC - March 2015 Edition - Supergirl Appears and The Avengers Gear up for Ultron

A relatively slow period before The Avengers: Age of Ultron hits the big screens in a couple of months.  I can't imagine that a new trailer would make me want to see this movie more than before.

Marvel Vs. DC Movie Update – Spider-Man is in the Neighborhood

I was not going to do an update on Marvel vs. DC movies until later this year. There really wasn't much to say. DC won't be re-kicking off their franchise until next year but Marvel has made some changes to their line-up you might have heard.

DC vs. Marvel - DC is Winning! On Television, that is.

On Television that is.   Yes, I know, DC has usually done fairly well on TV, this is nothing new but they are kicking butt big time right now.  I have been critical of DC’s vision for their movie franchise and probably unfairly.  Their recent Batman movies were excellent but they have done little else.  Meanwhile Marvel is so far ahead of them in terms of their plans that by the time DC’s first phase kicks into high gear, Marvel will be in its third phase.  It is not that DC is doing it wrong (Man of Steel was a misstep for sure) the problem is that it’s taking time getting going. Not true for Television - DC is doing everything right - in my opinion.

Marvel Vs. DC - Does DC have a chance to compete?

This is an updated post from a few weeks ago with some more titles and dates confirmed.  Included are the names of all the Marvel films into 2019.  We have DC, Marvel and the Marvel products released by Fox and Sony.


I always see this as a war between DC and Marvel and some of the release dates will have them battling for the Box Office.  It is interesting to note that these heavy hitters will be competing for biggest box office for the year not only against one another but against Star Wars, Terminator, Jurassic World, Independence Day 2, and a bunch of Avatar films. The superhero film will not be alone at the top of the box office and one will see if that genre can continue to perform strongly over the years.

Here is a schedule and some thoughts after.

DC Entertainment is Developing a Supergirl TV Series

Arrow and The Flash's Greg Berlanti has confirmed that plans are in place to produce a Supergirl TV series. No word on if the CW would pick up the proposed series which could lead to a Supergirl, Arrow and Flash crossover. Berlanti stated -

“We’re just starting to work on it,” Berlanti said. “We haven’t gone to the networks yet, so. I’ll be happy, very excited to talk about it once we know where its home will be and that kind of stuff, but not at this moment.”

So I called it that DC would move to April or June and they are moving to March. Good call for DC.  This movie needs to be a big movie and it has to be good.

I left the original dates for the DC films but it would appear that the new untitled dates are for Shazam, Wonder Woman, etc.  So the August 2016 date is probably Shazam and June 2017 might be Wonder Woman, staying away from Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Who knows at this point but there are more films in the list and so Cyclops, Aquaman and other possibilities are there.  We could also see Justice League move away from that Marvel title so that could be now set for July 2017.

Marvel is doing everything right and DC has not.  Sure, DC has just come off a monster Batman trilogy, but that is starting to seem like ancient history now.  Marvel is even toying with (or joking about) bringing back one of their massive failures of the past and would no doubt make a success of it now!!!  Marvel will at some point screw up but nobody is thinking it is going to happen in the next few years.

DC has something to prove and they have not gotten to the point where they can boast all these untitled films and expect people to get excited.  They need to give us their Iron Man or Captain America or Avengers version for DC first, then they can talk!

I will be interested in seeing what happens in May 2016.  The Batman v Superman movie is going to be huge and important to this entire plan for DC.  They cannot go up against the established Captain America.  Both films will suffer in the end and DC has more riding on this than Marvel.  Expect DC to move to April or June.

Later in 2016 the battle of the unknowns will be interesting as well.  If Batman v Superman sets up Shazam and Sandman properly then we should see some big hits.  Marvel's next new superhero introduction won't be a given by any stretch.

2017 will have three big DC movies and Marvel may counter with some heavy hitters of their own.  It would appear that Guardians is going to be a huge hit in 2014 and so should do well again.  It depends on what Marvel has in store for the rest of its films in 2017.

2018 should be all Marvel even with Man of Steel 2 there. Still, if DC has managed to have duplicated Marvel's success then by 2018 there could be more DC movies in the works.

I don't expect any battles per say but if both franchises give each other a little distance, both should do well.
