Synopsis

The violent, volcanic world of Hephastos is home to a colony of composers, painters, authors and poets, all striving to create the greatest works of art the universe has ever seen. But in pursuit of their goal, artistic collaboration has been taken a stage too far...
When the Doctor and Romana arrive, they discover the colonists have neglected their well-being and their once beautiful habitat, which has now succumbed to decay, and they are enslaved to the Babble network which occupies their every waking moment. Every thought, however trivial or insignificant , is shared with everyone else and privacy is now a crime.
The colonists are being killed and the Doctor and Romana begin to suspect that a malevolent intelligence is at work. With time running out, the two time travellers race to discover the truth before they too are absorbed into the endless trivia of the Babblesphere...

Sherlock Holmes: The Liverpool Demon Issue 3 Review

Sherlock Holmes:
The Liverpool Demon #3
By Leah Moore and John Reppion
Art by Matt Triano

Holmes and Watson are investigating a murder of a museum curator.  He was murdered while open crates for his new exhibit and Holmes noticed that one of the crates has gone missing.   So they are off to the boat that the boxes have been delivered on a hunch by Holmes that the missing crate might still be there and was not delivered.

While Holmes and Watson are doing that, Inspector Thornton has his hands filled with a puma that has escaped from the zoo.  It appears the puma found its way into the illegal dog fighting that is in the cellar of a building in the shadier parts of Liverpool and it appears to have killed everyone there man and dog.   How are these two separate incidents tied into The Spring Heeled Jack case they are working on?  Holmes has a theory and it involves a crooked medium and something that might have been overlooked.

The Liverpool Demon issue 3 was a total spin from the first two issues as it went in a direction I wasn’t expecting.  What I love from Leah Moore and John Reppion is how well they write for Sherlock Holmes as the capture the character really well.  I also like how they tell a story and with The Liverpool Demon I have been kept guessing what will happen next.  Even though my guesses have been wrong I do indeed love that as it tells the reader that the story is not predictable and it keeps you on your toes.

Another thing I enjoyed in The Liverpool Demon was the fact that the art was better than issue two.  I do not care how well a story is in a comic book if the art sucks then the story sucks also because it really brings it down.  Issue 3 was a lot better than issue two and the art had a good feel to it and wasn’t to dark that you couldn’t see anything.

I have been enjoying this comic book limited series and seeing Sherlock Holmes return in comic book form has been pretty cool to see.  The Liverpool Demon has so far been a good story and fits right in with the classic stories by Conan Doyle for the most part.  I’m really looking forward to the next few issues and to see how this story ends.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary: Planet of Evil By @Paul_Bowler

Doctor Who:
Planet of Evil
By Louis Marks
Reviewed By Paul Bowler
"Here on Zeta Minor is the boundary between existence as you know it and the other universe which you just don't understand. From the beginning of time it has existed side by side with the known universe. Each is the antithesis of the other. You call it "nothing", a word to cover ignorance. And centuries ago scientists invented another word for it. "Antimatter", they called it. And you, by coming here, have crossed the boundary into that other universe to plunder it. Dangerous."

When the TARDIS emerges from the time vortex 30,000 years in the future, the Doctor (Tom Baker) and Sarah (Elisabeth Sladen) respond to a distress signal from the planet Zeta Minor, where a Morestran geological expedition led by Professor Sorenson (Frederick Jaeger) has come under attack by unknown forces. The Doctor and Sarah arrive and explore the strange alien jungle as a military rescue vessel from Morestra also lands on the planet, it appears that Sorenson is the only survivor from the doomed expedition, and after the TARDIS is transported to the Morestran ship the Doctor and Sarah are caught and blamed for the demise of Sorenson’s team.

Planet of Evil (1975) marks the first solo outing for Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen as the Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith following Harry Sullivan’s (Ian Marter) decision to remain on Earth after they’d defeated the Zygons. It is clear from the moment we join them inside the TARDIS that Sarah’s relationship with the 4th Doctor is far more light-hearted than with his previous incarnation. The Doctor treats Sarah more as an equal partner in their adventures, she’s independent, resourceful, and he trusts her implicitly to be there for him when he needs her the most. Its marvellous to see Sarah teasing the Doctor about his ability to control the TARDIS at the start of the story, her practical thinking enables the Doctor to continue his work while she returns to the TARDIS for him to fetch some equipment to pinpoint Zeta Minor’s position in space, and she even braves the jungle to rescue the Doctor after he miraculously survives falling into the blackness of antimatter pit.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary: Terror of the Zygons

Doctor Who:
Terror of the Zygons
By Robert Banks Stewart

“This one they call the Doctor is a threat to us. Already he has found out too much. He must be destroyed.”

Responding to the message from The Brigadier from the space/time telegraph he left him The Doctor, Harry and Sarah find them in present day Scotland.  Apparently something is destroying oil rigs off the coast of Scotland and causing alarm as these rigs are huge and supposedly are unsinkable.   The Doctor examines some of the wreckage that has washed ashore and found one particular piece of steel interesting.  After using some plaster and making a mold The Doctor shows The Brigadier that the mold is of a giant tooth.  What makes it impressive is that whatever is the owner of the tooth is strong enough to eat through steel as if it was paper.

There are strange things going on around the inn that UNIT is using as a base when Harry finds on of the oil riggers workers have come on shore they are both shot at killing the worker and grazing Harry on the head.  Sarah does some investigating in the town and then informs The Doctor that Harry has been shot and goes and sees if he is ok at the infirmary at the Oil Company’s buildings.  While there Harry starts to regain conscious Sarah goes and calls The Doctor. Sarah is telling him what Harry has been mumbling when she is attacked by an alien creature.  It is a Zygon and they want to turn the Earth into a new home world for them to replace theirs which it was destroyed.  So it’s up to The Doctor and UNIT to prevent this from happening and to find a way of stopping the Zygons and the Skarasen.

Dark Horse and LucasFilms To Release The Star Wars Comic Book

Dark Horse and LucasFilm made some news yesterday at Wondercon the 2nd Convention of the season, Seattle's Emerald City Con being the 1st, about a project called The Star Wars.   The Star Wars is the rough original draft of what would eventually become Star Wars.  The project will be written by J. W Rinzler and art duties by Mike Mayhew and will be an eight issue series due out this September.  You can read the official press release below.

LUCASFILM AND DARK HORSE ANNOUNCE
THE BIGGEST EVENT IN THE HISTORY OF
STAR WARS COMICS!
George Lucas’s original-draft screenplay for The Star Wars to be adapted by J. W. Rinzler and Mike Mayhew!
APRIL 1, MILWAUKIE, OR–It’s no April Fools’ prank! Dark Horse is honored to announce a dream project: working with J.W. Rinzler, executive editor at LucasBooks, and artist Mike Mayhew (Avengers) to adapt the rough-draft original screenplay which spawned the biggest franchise in film history!

Three years before his 1977 film, George Lucas put down on paper his first story set in a galaxy far, far away—a tale of fantastic adventures, daring escapes, “lazer swords,” romance, and monsters. A story of Jedi Annikin Starkiller and General Luke Skywalker, an alien named Han Solo, and evil Sith Knights. The screenplay was titled The Star Wars!

“I’m not sure where I first read about The Star Wars—it was years and years ago—but the idea of Luke Skywalker being an older Jedi General, and Han Solo being a six-foot-tall lizard, turned my Star Wars fan brain on its side,” said longtime Star Wars editor Randy Stradley. “I always assumed this would be one of those stories that would be ‘lost to history,’ so getting to work on bringing it to life is kinda like a dream come true.”

“While researching in the Lucasfilm Archives I’ve found many treasures—but one which truly astounded me was George’s rough draft for The Star Wars. His first complete imaginings were hallucinating to read—mind blowing,” said writer J.W. Rinzler. “While working with George on another book project, I once asked if we could adapt his rough draft. He was hesitant. Years later, with Dark Horse’s invaluable help, we showed him a few drawn and colored pages of what it might look like. He gave us the okay.”

Originally conceived in 1974, The Star Wars has been the subject of rumor and legend in the fan community throughout the history of the galaxy far, far away. Now, Lucas has seen fit to grant Dark Horse the right to adapt this fabled story into an eight-issue comic series launching in September!

Doctor Who - Community and The Doctor by @fkmuse

Community and The Doctor
By Lacie Grayson

You meet a man, totally ordinary a little goofy looking and takes your hand a pulls you in to a blue box. This becomes your life, running from monsters and robots. It feels pretty amazing doesn't it? You become more clever, and you learn to trust what's behind that blue door.

After fifty years, Doctor Who has quite a community. In some places it borders on a family or out right fanatical. After all, that's where the word fan comes from. The question I'm most often asked is why? Everyone asks me why I love this show so much. It's a show that gives me hope.

April continues with BBC Americas celebration of 50 years of Doctor Who with their The Doctors Revisited series and, yep you guessed it is Tom Bakers time in the spotlight.  The story they will feature is a true classic as they will be airing The Pyramids of Mars after the documentary.  It all happens on Sunday April 28th at 8PM EDT.  Here is the press release courtesy of BBC America.

DOCTOR WHO: THE DOCTORS REVISITED – THE FOURTH DOCTOR – U.S. PREMIERE
BBC AMERICA celebrates the fourth Doctor, Tom Baker, in a new special of Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited, followed by the storyline Pyramids of Mars. Baker played the Doctor for seven consecutive seasons over a seven-year period, making him the longest-serving actor in the part so far. As the Doctor, he quickly made the part his own, and with his eccentric style of dress and speech – particularly his trademark long scarf – immediately became a recognizable figure. Tom Baker, lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, producer Marcus Wilson, companion Louise Jameson, among others, discuss the most alien Doctor to date and Davros, the menacing creator of the Daleks. In the tales of Pyramids of Mars, the Doctor and his companion Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) attempt to free a pyramid imprisoned Egyptologist from his possession by Sutekh, the last of a powerful alien called the Osirans. Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited – The Fourth Doctor premieres Sunday, April 28, 8:00pm ET/PT.
