Doctor Who - Should Fans Buy The Web of Fear DVD???

 

Should fans buy The Web of Fear DVD when it is released in the UK this week?  Well yes and no.  You see this release is a bit more complicated than the November 2013 release of The Enemy of the World.  For one The Enemy of the World is a complete story.  Philip Morris found all five of the episodes that were missing while one of them was (episode three) already in the BBC archives.   You see episode three of The Web of Fear is still missing and if you got the iTunes release you know they recreated that episode with a reconstruction of the telesnaps with the surviving audio.  So why should we buy a DVD that is exactly the same as the iTunes release?  Why should we buy The Web of Fear at all?

The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear DVD Information

Doctor Who News is reporting that the upcoming DVD releases for the newly found stories will be each a single disc.  Some pictures have shown a 2 disc set mention on the cover.  One has to wonder if there are any extras on these releases and conjecture has it that these may be bare bones releases.  It is possible that the BBC rushed out these releases in time for the 50th Anniversary celebration and will, at a later date release a special edition with features and commentary.  There is also rumors that "The Web of Fear" release on DVD in February might include the real episode 3 that is absent in the ITunes version.

Right now this is just a guess and over the next week or so there may be more info on the extras.  It is still important that these releases get support because who knows how long until an extra filled release would happen if at all.  It is possible that the BBC is done with these types of extras completely, which is a shame if that is true.

DVD Contents and Pics For Doctor Who "The Ice Warriors"

DoctorWho.TV the official Doctor Who website for all things classic Who has released the DVD details for the upcoming release The Ice Warriors.  Plus they have released a couple more pictures from the animated portion of the story.  It will be released in the UK on August 2, 2013.  No word on a North American release date yet.

The Ambassadors of Death - In Color!

Finally, after years of waiting, the BBC will be releasing the Third Doctor story, The Ambassadors of Death, on DVD in color.  Color prints of the story no longer exist apart from episode one.  Only B&W prints exist for the remaining 6 episodes.  Work had been done, using inferior off air color copies to restore episodes 5&6 but technology has finally advanced enough to complete the color restoration.  The DVD is planned for later this year.

The Fades Comes to America

BBC America will show the 6 episode British series, The Fades, this January.  The DVD/ Blu-Ray will come out shortly after that on February 21.  This was one of my favorite series of 2011 and got better with each episode.  No word on whether a second season has been approved.
