Doctor Who Missing Episode News - Web of Fear Part 3 WAS found but lost again...

By Ken Parker

Some reports out of the Doctor Who convention Pandorica have stated that Missing Episode finder Phil Morris disclosed some interesting information about " Web of Fear."  Back in 2013 Morris returned to previously missing stories - "The Enemy of the World" and "The Web of Fear" but episode 3 of 'Web of Fear" was not included.  It now appears that Morris had found it but in the process of recovering the material, it went missing.  Morris thinks that leaked information that the films were valuable provoked a Nigerian rely station manager to take the film can.  Morris believes that the can was then sold to a private collector.

These films would have been found in 2011 and negotiations took six months before the films were handed over, but once they were, episode 3 was not part of it. Morris wanted to keep all other finds a secret in order not to endanger any new recoveries.  Morris even has a photo of the film cans before episode 3 was stolen.

The eventual announcement was held back a while in hopes of recovering that particular film can but they gave up and went ahead with the announcement in 2013.

When asked if more were found Morris stated that he would not answer that question as it could endanger any future finds.  Morris also stated that now that the word is out that perhaps the person in question would return the film can.

Lots of speculation off of this revelation.  The original announcement of "Web of Fear", nothing was said about this for the missing episode.  Could "Marco Polo" be involved in this somehow.  That story was also attached to the rumor of the finds and that too came off the rumor list before the announcement.

This might have been the reason there was a delay for "The Web of Fear" being released on DVD, hoping that the release on ITunes might prompt the collector in giving up the film can. Anyway, it gives hope that the episode (which features the first appearance by Lethbridge Stewart) might still be out there and will find its way back someday.

The Doctor Who Missing Episodes Menace - Parts 1 and 4 Only

The Release of The Underwater Menace

Is this the wind blowing in the right direction?

By Ken Parker

It has been a long time since we have looked at the Doctor Who missing episode situation and for good reason.  Nothing has changed. Since the big reveal in 2013 there has been nothing officially reported. The final DVDs were released and "The Underwater Menace" cancelled, but that has changed.

A quick recap (okay not that quick)–

Happy Anniversary - The Return of Doctor Who - The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear

 by Ken Parker

Happy Anniversary to the announcement of the finding of the Doctor Who episodes “The Enemy of the World” and “The Web of Fear.”  One year ago this week we all learned that the long lost Second Doctor stories from the 60’s were found and available for download.  This was an incredible time for Doctor Who fans.  As many of you were aware, rumors of some found Doctor Who episodes were circulating around for about a year or two before that time but not until June of 2013 were these rumors to take on a new energetic life.  Unlike previous rumors of an episode or two found, this rumor had close to 90 found.  Apart from some denials from the Restoration Team, BBC, TIEA and Doctor Who magazine, the rumor held its ground with details that spelled out a “Marco Polo”, “The Enemy of the World” and “The Web of Fear” release later in the year.  This rumor was modified slightly with “Marco Polo” and one episode of “Web of Fear” being removed from the release for an unknown reason.

Doctor Who - The Web of Fear DVD Review

The Web of Fear one of the two missing stories that was recovered by Philip Morris has finally gotten its DVD release.  I order mine for the UK because I can not wait for the North American release and, well, I don't like hooking my laptop to the TV every time I want to watch the iTunes version.  That's right I double dipped and will probably triple dip when they reveal that episode three has been found later this year or next year. But anyway onto the review.  I loved the story and it is slowly becoming a favorite of mine and definitely one of my favorite Patrick Troughton stories.  If you want a more detailed review of the story you can check out the review we did when it was released on iTunes here.

The Web of Fear Breaks Doctor Who DVD Record

The Web of Fear has broken the 1st week sales record for classic Doctor Who releases.  BBC Worldwide has confirmed today the The Web of Fear has broken the record held by The Enemy of the World by selling 15,000 DVD's.  The Web of Fear was found along with The Enemy of the World by Philip Morris and was revealed back in October when the were released on iTunes.  Fiona Eastwood of BBC Worldwide had this to say about the record amount of sales.

“We knew that The Web of Fear would be a popular release; Yetis on the London Underground – need I say more? There’s a real appetite for exploring the extensive back-catalogue of classic stories, particularly following the 50th anniversary last year, and we’re committed to continuing that exploration for Doctor Who fans in the future.”

This is good news for fans of Classic Doctor Who and more to the point of Black and White era of Doctor Who. It is also proof that there is a market for the Missing Episodes of Doctor Who  and if Philip Morris has found more it would be a good idea to hurry up and get them released while the market is hot for them.

Doctor Who - Should Fans Buy The Web of Fear DVD???

Should fans buy The Web of Fear DVD when it is released in the UK this week?  Well yes and no.  You see this release is a bit more complicated than the November 2013 release of The Enemy of the World.  For one The Enemy of the World is a complete story.  Philip Morris found all five of the episodes that were missing while one of them was (episode three) already in the BBC archives.   You see episode three of The Web of Fear is still missing and if you got the iTunes release you know they recreated that episode with a reconstruction of the telesnaps with the surviving audio.  So why should we buy a DVD that is exactly the same as the iTunes release?  Why should we buy The Web of Fear at all?

Doctor Who - The Web of Fear DVD Details

There are very little details to report on this DVD as it is a bare bones release.  Yep a vanilla copy with none of the extras/VAM that we have come to expect from BBC World Wide and the Restoration Team that give us the great making of and commentary tracks that usually accompany a Doctor Who DVD.  Not this time though.  Another downer is that the missing episode three will be the telesnap reconstruction that is on the iTunes release.  So no animation for the missing episode three in which we have come to expect from other releases like The Moonbase which came out this week.  So if you just want to see the story and did not buy the iTunes release then you can buy this DVD of the Classic Patrick Troughton Story on February 24th in the UK.

Below is the BBC Worldwide Press Release

Previously unseen in the UK for 45 years and re-mastered from newly discovered tapes located in Nigeria, the formerly missing Doctor Who classic - Web of Fear - will soon be available to own on DVD. Starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor, alongside Frazer Hines (Jamie) and Deborah Watling (Victoria) as companions, this iconic story sees the TARDIS narrowly avoid becoming engulfed in a mysterious cobweb-like substance in space before arriving in the London Underground railway system.
The Doctor soon discovers that something strange is afoot as the tunnels are being overrun by the web, an army or robotic yetis and The Great Intelligence. Before the original broadcast in 1967, this story was deemed so scary that the Doctor delivered the following message to television audiences:

Thank goodness… Oh, it’s you… I thought for one moment it was… I’ll just sit down for a minute. I’m glad I met you as a matter of fact; there’s something I want to tell you. When we start out on our next adventure – Jamie, Victoria and I – we meet some old friends. Yes, and we also meet some old enemies. Very old enemies. The Yeti as a matter of fact. Only this time, they’re just a little bit more frightening than the last time. So I’ll warn you that if your Mummy or Daddy are scared, you just get them to hold your hand. *Gunfire* Here we go again. I’ve got to go. See you soon – I hope!

The Web of Fear is also famed for introducing one of Doctor Who folklore’s most beloved characters; Nicholas Courtney as Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart who later became the Brigadier. The Brigadier’s legacy lives on in contemporary Doctor Who, with Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (his daughter) starring in the show’s 50th anniversary episode The Day of the Doctor.

Features:

Episode Three reconstruction, presented using the original soundtrack alongside surviving images from the episode
Programme subtitles
Also Available: The Enemy of the World

Doctor Who - North American Release Date For The Web of Fear DVD

For those wondering when North America would get the DVD's of the two returned Patrick Troughton stories your wait is half over.  The Web of Fear will get its North American release on April 22nd.  This is kind of strange to be releasing this story first as Enemy of the World cliffhanger leads right into part one of The Web of Fear and has already had a Canadian release around Christmas.  No word on what they plan to do with the missing episode three as I doubt it will be animated and so far it has not been returned to the BBC.  There will not be any extras as this will be a bare bones release.

Doctor Who - Newly Recovered Missing Episodes Could Air On BBC4

The Radio Times has an article stating that the two missing Doctor Who stories that were recovered and released on iTunes in October might be getting an airing on BBC 4 in 2014.  The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear which was found in Africa by Philip Morris has been the jewel find of 2013 and the BBC have the right and desire to air these two stories on television.  It is not yet known if they intend to air the recon for episode three of The Web of Fear but I would imagine they would instead of showing the story incomplete.  If the BBC are successful in getting the stories aired it would be the first time they were aired on tv in 47 and 46 years.

Doctor Who - The Web of Fear Review

by Ken Parker

I love doing these reviews of stories I never thought I would ever see. Hopefully there are more to come.

"The Web of Fear" is one of the most important and talked about stories of the famed missing Doctor Who. Not only does it feature the return of Professor Travers, the Yeti and the Great Intelligence but it includes the debut of Lethbridge Stewart (Nicholas Courtney). This story would act as the primary blueprint for the U.N.I.T involvement in Doctor Who over the next bunch of years.

Nick Briggs Talks About the Return of Doctor Who Episodes

Nick Briggs was asked at New York Comic Con this past weekend what it was like to see the two Doctor Who episodes "The Enemy of the World" and "The Web of Fear".  Nick Briggs plays the voice of the Daleks, Cybermen and other characters in the latest Doctor Who series but is obviously thrilled with the return of these classic stories which are both available now on ITunes.

The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear DVD cover Artwork

This stuff is beautiful

The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear DVD Information

Doctor Who News is reporting that the upcoming DVD releases for the newly found stories will be each a single disc.  Some pictures have shown a 2 disc set mention on the cover.  One has to wonder if there are any extras on these releases and conjecture has it that these may be bare bones releases.  It is possible that the BBC rushed out these releases in time for the 50th Anniversary celebration and will, at a later date release a special edition with features and commentary.  There is also rumors that "The Web of Fear" release on DVD in February might include the real episode 3 that is absent in the ITunes version.

Right now this is just a guess and over the next week or so there may be more info on the extras.  It is still important that these releases get support because who knows how long until an extra filled release would happen if at all.  It is possible that the BBC is done with these types of extras completely, which is a shame if that is true.

The BBC Shop is selling a special version of the DVD with a slipcase cover (seen below) and a limited edition with an exclusive T-Shirt.

Found Doctor Who Episodes Selling Well on ITunes - Could Determine Future Releases

While no definitive numbers are available yet (I have not found any evidence other than a few people on forums saying things) it would appear that the initial sales of the 2 recently released classic Doctor Who stories "The Enemy of the World" and "The Web of Fear" on Itunes are doing extremely well in both the UK and US.  These sales will be important in not only what any future releases might look like but if there are other lost episodes found, could help fund and get them into fans hands sooner.

The rumor of more missing episodes seems to not be going away and hints of more to come are circulating.  If sales from ITunes and later the DVD releases are good, it will help support future releases and may expedite the process.  If anything, the ITunes sales (reports that both stories have been #1 and #2 since they have been made available in the UK) would support the idea that any future releases will also model after this one with a digital download followed by a DVD release a couple months later.

Both stories are available on UK and US ITunes

"The Enemy of the World" is out on DVD in the UK on November 25 and "The Web of Fear" will be out on February 24. No word yet on a US release of the DVD.
