Following the events that happened in The Mind Robber and the quick escape of a missile shot at them while in space near the dark side of the moon the TARDIS seems to have landed in a field filled with quite a bit of cows.  With the TARDIS visual stabilizer not working the 3 travelers head off to present day London to find Professor Travers and see if he can help them fix it.   With no luck there The Doctor ends up meeting Brigadier Lethbridge - Stewart who is investigating Tobias Vaughn and his company International Electomatics.  What The Doctor and Brigadier will find out is that Tobias Vaughn and his company is in fact in league with an invasion force.  An invasion force made up of Cybermen who are based on Earth and also hidden on the dark side of the moon.

Doctor Who - Season 13 40th Anniversary: Terror of the Zygons Review

Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the beginning of Tom Baker's second season as The Doctor. Season 13 had a lot of memorable stories and not a weak one in the bunch.  It gave us one of the more popular villains that have only just recently made a comeback and will be featured in Series 9 with Peter Capaldi. Here is what we thought of Terror of the Zygons.

Responding to the message from The Brigadier from the space/time telegraph he left him The Doctor, Harry and Sarah find them in present day Scotland.  Apparently something is destroying oil rigs off the coast of Scotland and causing alarm as these rigs are huge and supposedly are unsinkable.   The Doctor examines some of the wreckage that has washed ashore and found one particular piece of steel interesting.  After using some plaster and making a mold The Doctor shows The Brigadier that the mold is of a giant tooth.  What makes it impressive is that whatever is the owner of the tooth is strong enough to eat through steel as if it was paper.

The newly regenerated 3rd Doctor has arrived on earth the worst for wear as he has been traumatize by being forced to regenerate by the Time Lords after his trial.  His exile on earth hasn’t started off all that well as The Doctor is hospitalized and almost kidnapped and then grazed by a bullet from a UNIT soldier.  Not a very good start in your new body.  Over shadowed by those events was a mysterious asteroid shower with quite a few of them making their way to earth.  But the problem is these are not your ordinary space debris as The Nestene Intelligence is was part of that and that act was the first salvo fired in the invasion of Earth.  With the control of plastic and the plastic creatures the Autons to control it’s up to the new Doctor and his new companion Liz Shaw to stop them with the aid of UNIT and the Brigadier.  

Doctor Who: Spearhead From Space Blu-ray Review

A few facts about this Doctor Who story.  It is the first story to be shot and air in color.  It is the first Jon Pertwee (3^rd Doctor) story.  It is the first of the UNIT years (after their introduction in “The Invasion”) and the first in a long line of stories where the Doctor is in exile on Earth.  It is the first to feature Caroline John as Liz Shaw and the first to feature the Autons.  It is also the only classic series to be made on film and because of this fluke, we are able to see a Blu-ray release.

When the TARDIS arrives in the countryside near the village of Carbury, the Doctor and Ace see that a UNIT missile convoy is based in the area. After a brief meeting with Brigadier Winifred Bambera they set out to explore the local area, where they discover a secret entrance at Peter Warmsly’s archaeological dig by Lake Vortigern. The tunnel leads to a submerged spaceship from another dimension, where King Arthur’s body is stored in suspended animation, along with his fabled sword Excalibur.

Knights from this other dimension begin to land on Earth, drawn by the sword presence. Ancelyn arrives to help the King, but he is soon confronted by his enemy, Mordred, who along with his mother - the powerful sorceress Morgaine - have also travelled across the dimensional barriers to face Arthur one last time on this, their final battlefield.

“I, Mawdryn, have returned. It is time for the awakening.”

The TARDIS is caught in a warp ellipse and materializes on a starliner that appears to be empty.  What they find out that it isn’t as Turlough transmats to the starliner on orders of The Black Guardian to kill The Doctor.   The Doctor and Turlough take the transmat back to Earth to shut the transmat signal off so the TARDIS will be free to leave.  What happens is that when the transmat signal is shut off the TARDIS arrives in 1977 and not 1983 where The Doctor and Turlough are.

When Tegan and Nyssa arrive in 1977 they find a charred being in the capsule that they believe is The Doctor.  So Tegan decides to head for Brendon School to get some help.  She runs into an old friend of The Doctor as The Brigadier now teaches math at the school.   The pair head back to the TARDIS where Nyssa is anxious to leave but when they enter the TARDIS the person they see looks nothing like The Doctor at all.

Back in 1983 The Doctor runs into The Brigadier also but for some reason he does not remember who he is. For some reason he has no recollection of the last six years.  Once The Doctor helps The Brigadier regain his memory they work on trying to get back to the Starliner by the transmat capsule. With the aid of the homing beacon The Brigadier had from six years ago The Doctor, Turlough and Brigadier make it back to the Staliner but there is a problem.  Unfortunately the 1977 Brigadier arrived on the Starliner with Mawdryn , Nyssa and Tegan and if they meet it would be really bad or as Tegan says “ZAP!”
