Doctor Who - The Daemons Review

With Missy/ The Master returning we thought it would be good to take a look back at a few of the classic series stories that feature The Master.

Doctor Who:
The Daemons
By Guy Leopold

“Chap with the wings there. Five rounds rapid.”

There are strange things going on at Devils End.  There is an archeologist dig at The Devils Hump where a witch by the name of Miss Hawthorne is trying to get Professor Horner to stop as she believes great evil will be released.  While catching wind of this The Doctor and Jo head off to Devils End to Devils End and see if they can put a stop to it as The Doctor believes that Miss Hawthorne is indeed right.   To make matters worse The Master is posing as a Vicar for the town and is hoping that whatever is in Devils Hump will give him unlimited power.   The Master is already using black magic to help his cause and using the gargoyle Bok to do his bidding and to help keep a strangle hold on his control over the town.

What lies in Devils Hump is the alien Azal that looks like a version of the devil.  As they open the hatch of what happens to be his ship The Doctor tries in vain to stop them but is too late as the cavern is hit with a cold blast of air which freezes The Doctor and signals the coming of Azal as he is now free to roam the countryside.  So it’s up to The Doctor, when he thaws out, and UNIT to save all of humanity from Azal and The Master.

Doctor Who - The Claws of Axos Review

With Missy/ The Master returning we thought it would be good to take a look back at a few of the classic series stories that feature The Master.

Doctor Who:
Claws of Axos
By Bob Baker and
Dave Martin

“The claws of Axos are already deeply embedded in the Earth's carcass! Soon it'll activate its nutrition cycle and the feast will begin. The Axonite'll cease to be dormant and it'll continue to grow, gentlemen, until every living thing is consumed.”

A space ship is heading to earth and UNIT is on alert.  The Doctor is curious of its nature but as usual he gets put off by the humans that want to destroy it.  In particular with a Mr. Chinn from the Ministry that orders a missile strike.   When that fails and the missiles given the abort order UNIT goes to the area where the ship has landed which is near a power plant.

Doctor Who - Terror of the Autons Review

With Missy/ The Master returning we thought it would be good to take a look back at a few of the classic series stories that feature The Master.

Doctor Who:
Terror of the Autons
By Robert Holmes

“You are incorrigibly meddlesome, Doctor, but we've always felt that your hearts are in the right places. But be careful. The Master has learnt a great deal since you last met him.”

There is a new threat for The Doctor.  The renegade Time Lord The Master has made his way to Earth to cause havoc and to take it over.  This time his allies are the Nestene and their plastic servants the Autons. In exchange for the power he craves The Master helps to hatch the Nestenes plan to take over Earth.  The Master has taken up residency in the plastics factory owned by the Farrel family.   The Doctor is warned about the Master coming to Earth by a pompous Time Lord who says The Master is not the same push over as before.

Doctor Who - Spearhead from Space Review

To celebrate Jon Pertwee's 96th birthday we look back at his very first story as The Doctor.

Doctor Who:
Spearhead From Space
By Robert Holmes

“You really believe in a man who has helped to save the world twice, with the power to change his physical appearance? An alien who travels though time and space, in a police box!”

The newly regenerated 3rd Doctor has arrived on earth the worst for wear as he has been traumatize by being forced to regenerate by the Time Lords after his trial.  His exile on earth hasn’t started off all that well as The Doctor is hospitalized and almost kidnapped and then grazed by a bullet from a UNIT soldier.  Not a very good start in your new body.  Over shadowed by those events was a mysterious asteroid shower with quite a few of them making their way to earth.  But the problem is these are not your ordinary space debris as The Nestene Intelligence is was part of that and that act was the first salvo fired in the invasion of Earth.  With the control of plastic and the plastic creatures the Autons to control it’s up to the new Doctor and his new companion Liz Shaw to stop them with the aid of UNIT and the Brigadier.

Doctor Who: Spearhead From Space Blu-ray Review

by Ken Parker

A few facts about this Doctor Who story.  It is the first story to be shot and air in color.  It is the first Jon Pertwee (3rd Doctor) story.  It is the first of the UNIT years (after their introduction in “The Invasion”) and the first in a long line of stories where the Doctor is in exile on Earth.  It is the first to feature Caroline John as Liz Shaw and the first to feature the Autons.  It is also the only classic series to be made on film and because of this fluke, we are able to see a Blu-ray release.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary: The Five Doctors

Doctor Who:
The Five Doctors
By Terrance Dicks

“I am being diminished. Whittled away, piece by piece. A man is the sum of his memories, you know. A Time Lord even more so.”

The Doctor, Tegan and Turlough are actually enjoying some down time and doing things that are restful.  Turlough is painting and The Doctor is remolding the control console of The TARDIS and Tegan well she is doing something.   While this is all happening someone is taking the Doctor’s past lives out of time. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Doctor have all been scooped up by the time scoop and put into the Death Zone on Gallifrey. That is except the 4th Doctor as he seemed to have gotten stuck and is trapped in the time vortex in a time eddy and not on Gallifrey at all.

There also appears to be old friends and enemies inside the Death Zone also as Susan, Sarah Jane and The Brigadier are there also.  The Time Lords sense there is something wrong as they cannot find The Doctor at all.  They end up offering a deal to The Master to go into the Death Zone and rescue The Doctor.   The Master eventually agrees and heads off into the zone and is instantly scorned for his efforts and allies himself with the Cybermen who are also in the Death Zone to cause havoc and confusion.

What they do not know is that President Borussa trapped them there and is after the ultimate prize in which The Doctor unwittingly discovers for him.  He is after immortality and in order to gain it you must play and win the game of Rassilon.   So it is up to four Doctors to find a way home and to stop Borussa from gaining immortality.

Doctor Who - The Spear of Destiny Review

Doctor Who:
The Spear of Destiny
By Marcus Sedgwick

The Doctor and Jo are on the case to steal the Spear of Destiny from a museum in London.  The Brigadier is convinced something is strange with that historical piece and will give what help he can to The Doctor in stealing it.  The theft doesn’t go as planned as there were some strange security devices protecting it.  Plus it turns out that it is a fake.  So The Doctor worried about the power that the Spear possesses wants to get the real thing and proceeds to go back to the time of the Vikings. While there things aren’t what they seem as there are traces of technology and an old enemy waiting for them.

Of all the stories that have been released for Penguins 50th Anniversary Doctor Who celebration The Spear of Destiny actually felt like a story that could fit in that particulars Doctor’s era.  It had the feel of a Jon Pertwee story as it had UNIT and of course The Master involved.   Marcus Sedgwick captured the 3rd Doctor to a T and that was pretty good to see considering how the previous stories were close but no cigar.

Using the Spear of Destiny was a pretty good idea and having it something dangerous that the Time Lords wanted it removed was a pretty good idea and made for a good story.  I enjoyed The Spear of Destiny very much and was entertained throughout the story.  It was fun and interesting to read and kept my interest throughout.  I loved the twist the added in Viking times and would have been disappointed if The Master hadn’t shown up at some point.  It really had that third Doctor feel to it and thankfully someone wrote a story that didn’t mess with the mythos.

The Spear of Destiny was a fun short story and so far to this point the best story from the Penguin short stories of Doctor Who 50th Anniversary stories.

Doctor Who Debuts: Spearhead From Space By @ThePlanetHarris

Spearhead From Space:
Jon Pertwee’s first appearance as The Doctor
By Steven Harris

Patrick Troughton’s final appearance as the Doctor had seen him spinning off into the void having been punished by the Timelords for crimes against the recorder, or something like that. When Spearhead from Space was first screened on 3rd January 1970, not only the actor playing the Doctor was noticeably new. For a start the series was now being shown in colour, the opening title sequence had changed and the Doctor had been stripped of certain knowledge about operating the Tardis by the Timelords. Thus Pertwee’s Doctor spent several seasons stuck on Earth and working for Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart’s UNIT. This series also brought a new assistant, Caroline Johns, as Liz Shaw.

Directed by Derek Martinus, who was a veteran of Hartnell and Troughton stories, Spearhead From Space was written by one of the most regular contributors to the show in its entire history, Bob Holmes.

Rather like the first ever episode of Doctor Who, the Doctor himself is not seen until the plot has already begun to unfold. An initial shot of the Milky Way pans across to reveal the Earth before the scene changes to a Jodrell Bank type institute (though presumably military) where a sweaty scanner operative is figuratively rubbing his eyes at what his machine is showing him. He calls his boss – a woman (Women’s Lib given an early 70s boost by the show? – but she believes the anomaly to be meteorites. The sweaty man is not so certain – meteorites do not normally descend in formation.

10 Reasons to Watch the Third Doctor

The Top 10 Reasons to Watch the Third Doctor
By Ken Parker

10 - Effects – Related to the color reason listed later on, is it me or did a lot of the effects, especially the CSO effects look worse in color than they did in B&W? As with previous seasons of Doctor Who, we have a pretty famous array or poor effects including the dinosaurs in “Invasion of the Dinosaurs” and the horrible CSO in “The Green Death.”  Still they were getting more ambitious!

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary: Jon Pertwee The Third Doctor

“Obviously the Time Lords have programmed the TARDIS always to return to Earth. It seems that I am some kind of a galactic yo-yo!”

Jon Pertwee took over from Patrick Troughton and had the task of taking the show in a different direction and helped keep it going as it was almost canceled.  I think we all know he succeeded in doing that.   Plus he was The Doctor of action and his Doctor used his mind to come up with gadgets that helped in him saving the day from all the alien threats that happened.

Jon Pertwee’s Doctor was bad tempered at times and quick to blow his stack but look at it from his point of view.  He was exiled to Earth and lost the knowledge to operate the TARDIS and plus The Doctor had to deal with The Brigadier all the time.  H Yes he can be quite rough at times but he also had a tender side one that you can see all the time he traveled with Jo.  Yes he snapped at her, and frankly she did deserve it at times, but he really had a soft spot for her which was quite evident at the end of The Green Death.  You knew by his reaction from Jo leaving him that he did and that makes the tough and gruff Time Lord a big softie at heart.
