The Weeping Angels made their debut 8 years ago today in Blink.  We take a look back at the story that started the Weeping Angel phenomenon and is considered one of the best stories from NuWho.

Sally Sparrow is investigating an old house when she comes across a message on the wall that tells her to duck.  She is so freaked out by this that she gets her friend Cathy Nightingale to come with her to see how crazy this old house is.  Unknown to them there is something inside this old house that is extremely evil.  Cathy decides to go have a look around when Sally is met by someone at the door who claims to be the grandson of Cathy.  Sally finds this odd but without her knowing it Cathy has been transported back to 1920 by a Weeping Angel.

The Doctor (Matt Smith and Amy (Karen Gillan) visit the Delirium Archive, a museum in the distant future, where they find a rather odd exhibit - a flight recorder inscribed with old high Gallifreyan symbols. After discovering it is a the message is from Dr River Song (Alex Kingston), who is currently travelling on the starship Byzantium 12,000 years in the past, the Doctor uses the TARDIS to save her before the ship crash lands on the planet Alfava Metraxis.

While Amy gets acquainted with River Song, and her uncanny relationship with the Doctor, who still doesn’t know who she really is as they keep meeting at different point in his time stream. River tells the Doctor that the Byzantium’s cargo is a deadly Weeping Angel, a quantum locked stone creature that can only move when nobody is looking at it. As they survey the wreckage of the ship, River sends a message to a squad of military clerics in orbit, commanded by Father Octavian (Ian Glen), who beam down to help secure the Angel before the radiation leaking from the ship restores it strength.

Mark Whitaker is a grieving widow who lost the love of his life in a car accident in 2003.  He then receives an envelope that has “You can save her” in the message.  Confused and perplex mark seems to be aware that something is watching and following him.  Something that is sinister and really nasty.   Then Mark bumps into The Doctor who seems to arrive at the right time to save Mark from a Weeping Angel image in a TV in a store display.  That intervention is short lived as The Angel gets Mark at his apartment and sends him back in time to before he met his wife Rebecca and that note and envelope make sense.  But the Doctor finds this out and it’s up to him and Amy and Rory to go back in time and prevent a time stream problem that will feed energy to The Weeping Angels.

Doctor Who Book Review "Magic of the Angels"

The Doctor, Amy and Rory are taking in the sites of modern day London.  They are sightseeing on a double decker bus and The Doctor is adding his own two cents which promptly gets the threesome kicked off the tour bus.  They decide to see a magic act at a theatre.  In fact they go and see Sammy Star’s Amazing Magic Act.  Sammy Star’s act has a really good gimmick one that keeps packing the people in every night.  That is where everything goes wrong.  In fact the gimmick that Sammy Star is using is a Weeping Angel one of the deadliest creatures in the universe.

This is the newest addition to the Quick Reads Doctor Who line.  In fact this is the first book in the line that I have read.  For those who don’t know Quick Reads are books that are around 100 to 120 pages and are a really nice short story.  So far I have found them to be pretty cool and enjoyable.  Sometimes when you are busy, like me being a parent with an active kid, it is good to read something that isn’t complex and short.

With that said what did I think about Magic of Angels?  Well I really enjoyed it.  I really liked how the Weeping Angel was used.   To use it to make girls disappear in a magic act is pretty clever.  Especially that the Angel is chained up and can’t move.
Plus this book was fun.  It wasn’t complicated which at times is a good thing for a book especially a short story.  There is nothing worse than a complicated short story which makes you scratch your head. Plus the story made sense and was just a nice adventure for The Doctor, Amy and Rory to have.  It lived up to its name as a Quick Read as it didn’t take me long at all to read.  It was indeed quick.

So if you have a busy life, just don’t have time to read a long book or just looking for a story that is quick and easy to read then I recommend Magic of the Angels.  It is a well done and fun book to read that captures the feel of an 11th Doctor story and has a lot of good things going on also that will keep you guessing.

Silly Rumor for Doctor Who

Some of you may have heard this rumor already as it has circulated for a while, mostly from fans who love trying to come up with the worst ideas for Doctor Who.  Unfortunately these silly lame ideas have been making their way into the new series more often than in the past.  Wouldn't it be great if the Doctor wore his cowboy hat again?  Fighting Hitler? River Song gets married to the Doctor?  So forth.

Minor spoilers after the break to be followed by one unlikely but "I wouldn't put it past the production team to do something this ridiculous and turn Doctor Who into even more of a comedic parody" spoiler.

Dr. Who, Weeping Angels take Manhattan by storm

They're not in Cardiff any more.

The cast of "Dr. Who" took in many of the sights while filming in New York City this week. The Doctor, Amy and Rory visited Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Tudor City Plaza and Times Square. The episode will mark the return of the Weeping Angels.

"It's just that it's a different backdrop for the story," showrunner Steven Moffat told BBC America. "Something about Weeping Angels in New York seems to make sense to me. It's not to appeal to an American audience, particularly - they don't come to Doctor Who to see themselves, they come to Doctor Who to see us.

"We're not going to go there and film in the backstreets like we'd find in Cardiff, that would be a mistake!"

No word on whether anyone tried to sell Moffat the bridge.

Doctor Who To Film In New York For Series 7

Here is some pretty cool news is that episode 5 of Doctor Who's Series 7 will be filmed in New York.  Episode 5 is, of course, the one where Amy and Rory leave the show while battling the Weeping Angels. This news was announced yesterday by Steven Moffat at the Official Doctor Who Convention.  The news was confirmed by Executive Producer Caroline Skinner at the convention also.  I find this news pretty exciting because I live near New York. 

Also those lucky enough to be in attendance at the convention were given a sneak peak at Doctor Who's 7th Series.  That trailer will be available on the BBC Official Doctor Who website at 9am GMT.
