Has Doctor Who Spinoff Class Been Axed???

According to an article in The Mirror, grain of salt not needed here, it appears the BBC will be canceling the Doctor Who spin-off Class after just one series. The ratings for Class has not been stellar as the first episode gained 600,000  viewers but tanked right after averaging around 300,000 viewers and not topping the top 50 of shows being viewed on iPlayer and the BBC late night airing was dismal as well. Plus it wasn't helped by the fact that the BBC did not promote Class well enough either.

Class was created and all episodes were written by Patrick Ness and it just wasn't the show that Steven Moffat had told us it would be. I thought it was a bit of mess filled with more teenage angst than fighting alien monsters.  If I had a choice to watch Class or Torchwood: Miracle Day I would watch Miracle Day.  Class was the fourth Doctor Who spinoff and the one that fared the worst with viewers, K-9 and Company is now happy with that news, and hopefully this pot hole in the road of Doctor Who doesn't put off the BBC from trying another Doctor Who spin-off.

Miss Quill has put Charlie, Ram, Tanya, April and Matteusz in detention while she goes out and takes care of other matters.  While trying to use a spare key to escape their fate an asteroid comes through the rift and enters the classroom transporting it to a void that is not in any place in time and space.   The problem with this piece of the asteroid is that it feeds of the  negative feelings of the person holding it and thus makes you reveal your true feelings about your friends.

The thing about holding the meteor is that you can only hold it for a little bit of time before it consumes you.  Charlie finds out that the meteor is holding the essence of an alien murder and that they all have been transported to its prison.  They all discover that they are trapped in this prison and they only way they can figure out to get out is to hold the meteor and ask it questions but in doing so they reveal more of themselves than they really want to.

The whole gang is thrown into detention by Miss Quill. Locked in her classroom, they are terrified when an explosion propels them out of space and time: trapped, claustrophobic and floating in blackness with no way of escape.

April is having trouble coping with sharing her heart with the king of the Shadow Kin.  To make things worse is that the Shadow King is trying to get full control of the shared heart which would in turn kill April.   It appears that this process is affecting April at school and at home as she has been showing signs of being like the Shadow Kin and even producing their swords out of thin air.   Ram is there to help April cope with what is going on and to make matters worse is that Aprils dad is trying to get in touch with her and she doesn’t want anything to do with him.

While that is going on Miss Quill is meeting with Dorothea Ames who is now the new head teacher taking over for the deceased Mr Armitage.  She tells Miss Quill how the Govenors are interested in her and have a pretty nice offer for Miss Quill which is too good to not accept.  In exchange Miss Quill must help Miss Ames to get rid of the killer flower petals that are falling to Earth.  It appears that the flowers will suck the blood out of you and when they feed they multiply.  If this threat is not taking care of the flowers will soon smother everyone in London.

Tanya is visited by what appears to be an apparition of her father on the second year anniversary of his death.  Tanya is pretty convinced that this alien is trying to play with her feelings for her late father and she isn’t the only one.  The Lan Kin have come through the breach and have ssent out what looks like giant vines to peoples home prying on those who have lost somebody to death and haven’t let go of their grief.  This is evident when Ram is visited by Rachael while he is Skyping with April.  Also Miss Quill is visited by her dead sister and suddenly we all hell breaks loose as they rush to help Tanya and her family and everyone else that is held prisoner by the Lan Kin.

The information for the fourth episode of Class has been released by the BBC.  The Fourth epsidoe will be called Co-Owner Of A Lonely Heart and looks to focus on April.  Below is the synopsis, promo pics and trailer.

April starts to feel effects of sharing her heart with Corakinus, and his attempts to sever the attachment only make it stronger. 

When April's estranged father makes a startling appearance she confronts him with Shadow Kin force, manifesting traits of the Shadow Kin leader. 

Frightened by this extraordinary new-found power, April seeks comfort in Ram, and vows to reclaim her heart as her own. 

Meanwhile, something strange is happening to the others - London is slowly being infested with unusual, sinister flower petals.

Ram is struggling with the events that have befallen him with the death of his girlfriend and the loss of his leg. He’s trying to get used to the new leg and playing soccer at the same time and it isn’t going well as Coach Dawson is on him for his declining performance and drops him to the second team.  Ram also notices that something strange is going on as he has witnessed two school faculty get killed by a strange creature that looks like a dragon.

Tanya, Charlie and April want to help Ram but he keeps pushing them away as he doesn’t want to talk about it.  Until they see the dragon for themselves as it has a striking resemblance to the tattoo on Coach Dawson’s arm and back.  Ms. Quill on the other hand has her hands filled with a reviewer of her class and teaching technics and he isn’t all that he appears to be.  It’s just another day at Coal Hill School with a killer dragon on the loose.

So here we are with the beginning of a new spin off series of Doctor Who with Class.  Doctor Who has had two successful spinoff series with Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures and now we have Class written by Patrick Ness and available on the streaming channel that is BBC 3 and iPlayer.  Class is the creation of Young Adult author Patrick Ness and Steven Moffat has tapped him to come up with this series of eight episodes that takes place in Coal Hill School.

For those not familiar with Coal Hill School it was first introduced in 1963’s An Unearthly Child. The Doctors granddaughter Susan was enrolled there and caught the curiosity of two of her school teachers Ian and Barbara and well you know the rest of the story.  Coal Hill School would be featured again in 1988’s Remembrance of the Daleks and would be a focal point in NuWho as Clara would have a teaching job there.  So now we have a new series taking place at Coal Hill School with a bunch of students and one teacher as its protector all with The Doctor’s blessing.

It's a new term at Coal Hill Academy, and students are preparing for their Autumn Prom. But when the school comes under attack from the monstrous Shadow Kin, four alienated students must form an unlikely alliance to defeat them.  

Charlie, April, Ram and Tanya, assisted by their physics teacher Miss Quill, are now charged with a great responsibility by the mysterious alien known as 'The Doctor': to guard against the creatures of nightmare, who want nothing more than to find a way through to Earth and take it for their own.

Following the tragic events at the Prom, a devastated Ram isolates himself from the other three as he struggles with his new reality. Desperate to hold himself together on the football pitch, when he thinks he witnesses someone getting skinned alive he's convinced he's cracking up.

But when Tanya, Charlie and April are all confronted with the same thing: a horrific, monstrous, skin-peeling dragon, they know that they're under attack. The gang must pull together to fight against the monster, and try to keep Coal Hill safe.

News For Doctor Who Spinoff Class

Last Friday there was a lot of news for the new Doctor Who spinoff Class.  First it will begin airing on Saturday October 22nd in the UK on BBC 3.  Unfortunately for the rest of us it will air later.  As for us in the USA later means 2017.  Second Peter Capaldi will be in the first episode.  He will be making a guest appearance to make sure that we all know that Class takes place in the Doctor Who Universe.

We now know the names of the characters in Class and they are  Charlie (Greg Austin), April (Sophie Hopkins), Ram (Fady Elsayed) and Tanya (Vivian Oparah), and heir physics teacher Miss Quill (Katherine Kelly).

The first two episode title have been announced and they are For Tonight We Might Die and The Coach with the Dragon Tattoo.

NYCC Adds More Doctor Who Guests Highlighted By Peter Capaldi and Pearl Mackie

Over the weekend NYCC has added some big BBC guests through BBC Worldwide and fans of Doctor Who will not be disappointed.  Peter Capaldi, Pearl Mackie and the cast of Class will be appearing Friday at NYCC over at The Theater at Madison Square Garden which boasts a bigger venue so more people will be able to see the 12th Doctor.  Also added to the Matt Smith and Karen Gillan autograph sessions will be Jenna Coleman.  She will be appearing Thursday and Friday in the autograph area.  NYCC runs from October 6 to the 9th.  More info at the links below.

Doctor Who - BBC Announces Doctor Who Spin off "Class"

The BIG news that was teased all afternoon and evening, depending on your timezone, has been announced and it is a spin off series called Class and it will take place at Coal Hill School and will air on BBC 3. It will be written by Young adult author Patrick Ness.  The series will be aimed at Young Adults as we will see students take on monsters at Coal Hill School.
