Goodbye to 12 - Doctor Who - The Doctor Falls Review

“The Doctor Falls” is the final episode of Series 10 and for once it was a pretty decent episode but it wasn’t great.  Like most of the big series ending stories they try to jam so much into the story. Case in point we have the Cybermen and two versions of the Master.  With a cluttered cast this doesn’t really bog the story down as for the most part the Master and Missy plus the Cybermen were not really featured all that much in the story.  For the most part it was a story about Bill and The Doctor getting to grips with what had happened to her.  Bill had been converted into a Mondasian Cyberman and she’s not all that sure that The Doctor can change her back to human.  She also lets him have it about making her wait for ten years and that it’s his fault that this happened to her.  To a degree she’s right and it’s a wonder that things that happened to Bill hasn’t happened to the companion more often.

A 4 mile spaceship that is tinkering next to a black hole and the escape velocity has made time a bit out of whack.  The gravity of the black hole has manipulated time that the part of the ship next to the black hole is moving very slow while the bottom of the spaceship is moving fast.  This becomes a problem later on when The Doctor figures it out when he is desperate to get back to Bill who was shot with a laser right through her chest. What lead us to this point was that the TARDIS landed on the spaceship to conduct a test for Missy.  The Doctor picked a distress call and with the aid of Bill and Nardole will go with Missy to investigate what is wrong while he stays in the TARDIS monitoring to make sure Missy can be good.   Apparently the travelers were detected and what is on the bottom of the ship seems to be coming up to the top to take whoever is human and whatever it is has the janitor Jorj frighten enough to kill whoever is human and to The Doctors horror he does.

Doctor Who Christmas Special Interview With Pearl Mackie

It's that time again when there is a new episode of Doctor Who and that means interviews from the BBC Media Centre.  So to kick things off we start with the first interview with Pearl Mackie who plays Bill.

What have we got to look forward to in this episode?

There’s so much! We’ve got not one but two TARDISes, and we travel in both of them which is pretty exciting. We’ve also got three Doctors - that’s pretty amazing. Obviously we’ve got the current Doctor who we all know and love, but we’ve also got the First Doctor played by David Bradley - who is phenomenal. The current Doctor, who’s dying but refusing to regenerate at the start of the story, meets him as a way of dealing with his current struggles. The interaction between those two is great - really funny, but also surprising and very moving in places. And of course there’s also the regeneration, when the Twelfth Doctor becomes the Thirteenth Doctor!

“Well, it didn't work. You got a Roman legion slaughtered, and you made the deadliest creature on this planet very, very cross indeed. To protect a muddy little hillside, you doomed your whole world.”

The TARDIS lands in 2nd Century Scotland to try and find out what happened to the 9th Legion.  Bill is so sure that they will find the 9th Legion that she wagers with The Doctor about it.  He is skeptical but encourages her to go off and find her Romans.  As Bill heads off one way The Doctor and Nardole head off on another where they come across a village.  This village is very special as it has the gate which their gatekeeper is in charge of protecting.  The gate is a portal to another dimension which is home to a creature that was released to destroy the 9th Legion.  The problem is that the creature is still out there and so is Bill with all that remains of the 9th Legion.

“There will be more, you idiot. The Hive is active. Don't you see? They'll do anything to defend their home planet.”

The Doctor, Bill and Nardole appear to be at the Florida NASA center to watch the incoming images from the Valkyrie space probe.  When they eventually see the words “God save the queen” under the polar ice caps it prompts them to head to Mars in the year 1881.  There they find, well The Doctor and Bill as Nardole is taken away by the TARDIS, a group of her Majesties army who have been aided by an Ice Warrior to take Mars in the name of Queen Victoria.  Friday, the Ice Warrior named after the character in the Robinson Crusoe book, has promised them jewels and riches in exchange for help to back to Mars.  But The Doctor is pretty suspicious of this and thinks Friday has a higher motive in hand and his hunch is about to become a reality once they find the area of the Ice tombs and the Empress herself.

“Hidden amongst 7 billion, there is someone like you. That’s why I put up with the rest of them.”

The final part of what has been known as The Monk trilogy has finally aired and I have to say that the final part of this story was pretty boring.  I did I found it pretty dull and I could not wait for the episode to end.  It came across pretty tedious also.  They spent way too much time with Bill trying to find and then get to The Doctor.  I mean they spent way too much time that I lost interest.  To me it seemed that each part of this trilogy just got worse from episode to episode and “The Lie of the Land” was by far the worst one.

“The Pyramid at the End of the World” is the second part of three of the story that features The Monks and their attempt to take over the world.  This story was co-written by Peter Harness and Steven Moffat and it more or less sets up what will happen in the next story “The Lie of the Land” which will be written by Toby Whitehouse and is the conclusion of this three part story.  Like what I wrote last week I really cannot grade this story until I see all three parts but so far I liked “Extremis” a lot better than “The Pyramid at the End of the World”.

Extremis is the first part of a three part story that is penned by Steven Moffat while the next two episodes will have different writers along with Steven Moffat.  I have to admit that I had to watch Extremis a couple of times to figure out what was going as it was a typical Steven Moffat story with a lot of stuff going on.  In fact that is one of the reasons to watch it again as there was a lot going on that you definitely didn’t pick everything up on first viewing.  You might not get everything on the second viewing either but anyway Extremis was a better story than anything that Steven Moffat wrote for last season.

“Tell me a joke before you leave.”

Space Zombies, I’m not a big fan of zombie movie or even zombie television shows so when I saw the trailer for Oxygen I was a bit hesitant if I would like this particular story at all.  Well once I finished watching “Oxygen” that was not the case at all.  I really enjoyed it but not necessarily for the zombies; luckily they were not featured much, but for the overall message and what happened at the end.

“Knock Knock” is mainly about Bill and her friends looking to rent a house while at university. They were not having any luck until an older man offered them a house for rent that was cheap and had enough bedrooms to accommodate everyone. But of course if it’s too good to be true it genuinely is as The Doctor who is helping Bill move in is instantly alerted to something not right about the house.  The Doctor senses something alien and as usual he is correct as the whole house seems to be alive and it’s alive and infested with alien bugs.  The creepy thing is the house won’t let you leave and it seems to open up the walls and sucks you in.

“I don’t have the luxury of outrage.”

The third episode of Series 10 of Doctor is the story written by Sarah Dollard titled “Thin Ice”.  It takes place during 1814 during the last Frost Fair on the river Thames.  But there is something not right with this Frost Fair as people seem to have been disappearing and there are also green lights under the ice.  Not to mention a giant creature chained down in the Thames whose excrement seems to burn a lot stronger and longer than coal.  I do believe that scene where Bill goes “No Sh…..” is one of the funniest in the new series in quite some time.

“So, where is everyone? Don't tell me we've come halfway across the universe and they've all gone out. We should've texted first or something.”

When this story was first announced, and from what was shown during the trailers, I thought this story was going to be really stupid and be one of the worst of all time.  Well for Sleep No More and Love and Monsters their title of one of the worst stories ever is still in their possession.  Smile was in fact a very entertaining and enjoyable story.  I never would have thought a story about Emojibots would be entertaining or in that fact good considering the writer is the same that gave us the very forgettable "In the Forest of the Night".

At the time of transmission it has been over a year since we had a full series of Doctor Who and about 3 ½ months since the last time we had a brand new episode to watch.  So it’s been a while since Doctor Who fans have something new to talk about.  Or in true Doctor Who fandom complain about a lot or love it way too much.  The Pilot is the first episode of series 10 of Doctor Who and it is also the first story of the last series that will star Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.  I’m a little bit saddened by this as I’ve really enjoyed Peter Capaldi’s performance as the Doctor and in The Pilot he gives us another one of his great performances.  I guess we’ll have to enjoy it while we can before the new person takes over.
