Doctor Who Returns Exclusively to Amazon’s Prime Video‏

For those of you who have been missing Doctor Who on streaming sites like Netflix since the contract expired a few month's ago you can now rejoice.  Doctor Who will be streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime starting on Sunday March 27th.  Series 1 - 8 will be available with Series 9 coming in the Fall.  So far only Nuwho has been announced and there has been no mention of Classic Who and hopefully they will be adding the Classic Series at some point.  Below is the official press release.

Today, Amazon and BBC Worldwide North America announced a multi-year content licensing agreement to make Prime Video the exclusive U.S. subscription streaming home for the award-winning series Doctor Who. 

The details:

•             U.S. Prime members can enjoy seasons 1-8 of BBC AMERICA’S award-winning science-fiction television series, along with all the Christmas special episodes, starting March 27, 2016 at no additional charge to their membership

•             Season 9  and the Christmas Special, The Husbands of River Song will be available in Fall 2016

Quick synopsis:

Doctor Who, a BBC Production, began broadcasting on BBC AMERICA in 2005, follows the Doctor, an alien from a race called the Time Lords whose home planet is Gallifrey. The Doctor travels through time and space in his ship the TARDIS – short for Time and Relative Dimensions In Space – with numerous companions in an effort to continuously save the world. Christopher Eccleston (Thor: The Dark World), David Tennant (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Matt Smith (Terminator Genisys), and Peter Capaldi (World War Z) have all played the Doctor in the hit series. After BBC audiences were first introduced to the series fifty-two years ago, Doctor Who continues to garner global success while continuing to keep the fans and critics buzzing. Doctor Who - Hello Sweetie!!! River Song and NuWho Arrive At Big Finish

With this new announcement it is surely only time until we get stories for the NuWho Doctors but in the meantime we have some NuWho monsters and friends of The Doctor.  The biggest announcement is that Alex Kingston will be reprising her role as River Song for Big Finish in two box sets.  The first is The River Song Diaries and the second is Doom Coalition 2 starring Paul McGann.  Doom Coalition 2 should be interesting as she must help The Doctor by not meeting him.  Winston Churchill will be getting a box set played again by Ian McNeice.  This NuWho version will recall his exploits with the 9th, 10th and 11th Doctors.  The next box set will feature Big Finish Classic Doctor's 5 to 8 facing off against some familiar NuWho villains.  Even though I don't understand how the Sontarrans are new.  Below is the synopsis for the box sets that will be out in 2016.

The Doctor, Rose and Jack have been taken off the TARDIS by a teleport and dropped into familiar game shows of the past that are now housed on Satellite 5.  The Doctor is concerned that something isn’t what it seems especially if whoever it is is powerful enough to teleport them from inside the TARDIS.   The Doctor and Jack both escape their games but Rose is in trouble on The Weakest Link game and is in danger of being disintegrated.  Unfortunately they are too late and the Anndroid does the deed and Rose is dead.

The Doctor and Jack make their way to level 500 and Jack discovers the TARDIS in one of the archive rooms.  He also makes another discovery.  Rose isn’t dead in fact she has been teleported somewhere else.  The Doctor tries and figures out what is going on by talking to the controller.  What he discovers brings terror to him and to Jack.  Rose is on a Dalek ship and there appears to be an armada of them.  The Doctor must save Rose and defeat the Dalek invasion force even if it costs him his Ninth incarnation.

They do what they're programmed to do. They patch it up. Can't tell what's gasmask and what's skull, but they do their best. Then off they fly, off they go, work to be done. Because, you see, now they think they know what people should look like, and it's time to fix all the rest. And they won't ever stop. They won't ever, ever stop. The entire human race is going to be torn down and rebuilt in the form of one terrified child looking for its mother, and nothing in the world can stop it!”

The Doctor and Rose are chasing a metal cylinder through the time vortex.  It is a high priority and The Doctor uses the TARDIS computers to lock in on it and follows it to Earth.  They land in London in the year 1941 during the height of German bombing blitz.  The problem is it will be difficult for The Doctor and Rose to find the cylinder as it is war time and the army is guarding it.  Rose wanders off and ends up getting caught hanging onto the rope of a barrage balloon as she was trying to help a kid on a roof wearing a gas mask.  She is soon rescued by the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness who knows where the cylinder is and wants to sell it for profit and wants to make a deal with Rose and The Doctor.

Rose asks The Doctor to take her back to November 7th 1987 the day that her Dad died.  She wants to be sure he doesn’t die alone like the way he does in the story that Jackie tells.  At first Rose gets cold feet and she just watches him die and asks The Doctor if she can try again.  Against his better judgment he reluctantly agrees and they go back to that fateful moment. But it doesn’t go as planned.

Rose changes her mind and runs out and saves her father from getting hit by the car that takes his life changing history and making The Doctor extremely angry.  The web of time has been affected and serious consequences could happen. The Doctor decides to leave Rose in 1987 but when he gets back to the TARDIS it is nothing but an ordinary Police Box.  Something devastating has happened as deadly Reapers start appearing out of nowhere killing people.  You see while Pete Tyler lives Earth is destined to be destroyed and The Doctor must come up with a plan to save the Earth from Rose’s stupid mistake at the risk of hurting his young companion.

The Doctor and Rose have arrived in an underground bunker near Salt Lake City Utah in the year 2012 where The Doctor discovers that they are in the middle of a museum that has tons of alien artifacts including a Cybermen head.  They are soon captured by the guard and taken to Henry van Statten for questioning.  During questionng The Doctor discovers that van Statten isn’t interested in the uniqueness of the artifacts but to exploit them and keep them for his collection.  It appears he also has a live specimen and The Doctor finds out that he too will be a part of his collection as he is an alien and the last of his race.

BBC Worldwide has announced a deal with Bit Torrent to release a Doctor Who Ten story box set. The Box set will celebrate 10 years of new Doctor Who and will feature stories from the eight series that have aired during the 10 years.  The package includes Peter Capaldi giving insights into his favorite Doctor Who episodes along with the documentary Earth Conquest.

10 Years On - A Celebration of NuWho’s 10th Anniversary

March 26th 2005 is the date that Doctor Who returned to our screens.  Since then we have had four Doctors and discovered a Doctor we didn’t know even existed.  A lot of stuff has happened in those ten years.  New chapters have been added to The Doctor’s story that kept the mystery of him going. We got to see a lot more of the human side of The Doctor as we watch him getting married to River Song and how that relationship affected the mysterious traveler.  We also learned what happened to Gallifrey and how the Time War ended and it left us with a question that still hasn’t been answered. These ten years have sure changed the show that we used to watch in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and it was for the better as the old format would not work that well in this day and age.  Everything we knew about Doctor Who changed 10 years ago on March 26th some for the better and some not so well.  But that should be expected when you have a show that’s been on the air for ten years straight.

Rose is wandering in the cellar of the shop she works at to give Wilson the lottery money.  She is having a hard time finding him and she seems to be seeing movement in the corner of her eye.   It appears that the shop dummies have come to life and have proceeded to chase her.  Rose thinking it is a college prank yells at them to stop it.  It appears that the shop dummies are Autons and have every intention of killing her. When out of nowhere a stranger grabs her hand and tells her to run.

Doctor Who - Big Finish To Do New UNIT Series With Jemma Redgrave

Big Finish will be releasing a new UNIT Series starring Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart.  This is pretty exciting as we all know Kate Stewart from NuWho and her recent appearance in Death in Heaven with Peter Capaldi.   UNIT: Extinction will be the first of four box sets for this new UNIT series and will be out November 2015. The first box set sees Kate and her team fighting off a threat from the Nestene Conscious and their plastic henchmen The Autons in 4 hour long stories. No other cast members have been announced yet but with this release it is looking like Big Finish might be one step closer to getting the rights to do NuWho stories.
