4.1 The Rise of the New Humans by Guy Adams

When a man dies after falling from the top floor of a multi-storey car park, the Doctor and Jo wonder why it should be of interest to UNIT. Then they see the protuberances on the man’s back… As he fell, he tried to grow wings.

Looking into the man’s past leads the Doctor and Jo to a remote private hospital where the staff aren’t as helpful as they could be, and the Chief Administrator is unavailable to meet with them.

Breaking into some restricted wards, the Doctor notes the presence of alien and futuristic technology. The whole thing bears the unmistakable hallmarks of one of his own people’s interference, one of his old foes. Except not perhaps the one he might have imagined.

The Monk is back. And this time his meddling may have gone too far.

4.2 The Tyrants of Logic by Marc Platt

The Doctor and Jo land on Port Anvil – a bleak, abandoned mining colony on the remote planet Burnt Salt. A huge armoured crate has recently arrived in the almost derelict Spacehub. No-one knows who it’s for. No-one knows what it contains.

Strange creatures lurk around the outskirts, and a rag-tag population of misfits inhabit what is left of the town: a saloon bar owner, a literal one-man band and a hunter of very unusual prey. If they want to survive the night, they’re going to have to work together.

Because the Cybermen want the contents of the crate. And they will stop at nothing to get hold of it.

During a North Sea military exercise, the crew of the destroyer HMS Nemesis detect what they suspect is a submarine following them. But it’s actually a futuristic ship with an alien occupant, Arianda.

The Doctor and UNIT are called in, but things are already running out of control. The damaged craft is leaking particles and contaminating the Nemesis with time disruption.

But that’s not the biggest problem. For Arianda is being followed by the warships of the Horofax, who have picked precisely this moment to invade. Soon the destruction of humanity’s future will begin.

There is a new threat for The Doctor.  The renegade Time Lord The Master has made his way to Earth to cause havoc and to take it over.  This time his allies are the Nestene and their plastic servants the Autons. In exchange for the power he craves The Master helps to hatch the Nestenes plan to take over Earth.  The Master has taken up residency in the plastics factory owned by the Farrel family.   The Doctor is warned about the Master coming to Earth by a pompous Time Lord who says The Master is not the same push over as before.

UNIT headquarters is being evacuated and Jo is shocked to find that most of her friends are gone already.  This was all sudden and she is very suspicious of the British army officers that are in charge of evacuating UNIT and starts to investigate what is really going on.  This obviously gets Jo in trouble and she is soon captured by the aliens posing as British officers.  Their true motive has to do with The Doctor and Jo doesn’t know where he is at the moment.  Then they hear the familiar sounds of the TARDIS returning but what they see is something else entirely.  The 7th Doctor has arrived and Jo isn’t all that sure of this version of The Doctor and is forced to trust him to save the Earth and hopes he can return her Doctor to them.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary: The Seventies

Ah The 70’s.  Oh how I don’t remember you.  It was the decade I was born in. It was the decade that Vietnam ended and unfortunately it was the decade that gave us disco.  Why god, why did disco come to fruition and why did the Bee Gees go to the dark side.  Speaking of the Darkside the 70’s also gave us Star Wars and the return of Star Trek with that very forgettable movie.  But for Doctor Who the 70’s was a decade of stability.  A decade where you knew, that on Saturday at tea time, you would be in for a treat. A treat brought to you by the two longest serving actors in the role.  Of course I’m talking about Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker.

Jon Pertwee heralded a different direction for the show.  Not only was the show being filmed in color but his Doctor was exiled to earth.  For his first three seasons the Third Doctor was earth bound and defended it against alien threats.  The UNIT years were quite different.  In fact you could look to those seasons as a precursor to shows like Fringe and The X- Files to name a few.  The UNIT years gave us some good characters like Liz Shaw, Captain Yates, Sgt. Benton and of course The Brigadier.

“Stevens, listen to me. You've seen where this efficiency of yours leads. Wholesale pollution of the countryside. Devilish creatures spawned by the filthy by-products of your technology. Men walking around like brainless vegetables. Death. Disease. Destruction.”

A miner has died in the coal mine town of Llanfairfach which is in South Wales.  The problem with the miner who has dies is that he is now glowing green.  UNIT has been called in to investigate and The Doctor believes that it could be pollutants from Global Chemical.  Global Chemical seems to be run by a giant computer called the Boss.  The Doctor finds out that Boss runs the company and the man he uses as a figure head Stevens and is also responsible for pumping chemicals into the mine shaft. One of the ramifications of the chemicals being dumped into the mine is that it is infecting the maggots and making them humongous mutant killers.

Jo ends up meeting a Cliff Jones at his Nuthutch and seems to have fallen for the hippy professor and his group of earth friendly scientist.  They mainly are looking for a new peaceful ways to help the Earth and have been protesting Global Chemical.  They also like to eat mushrooms and which as it turns out the fungus in them becomes vital later on as it is poisonous the maggots.  So it’s up to The Doctor and a certain crystal to help defeat the computer Boss and the giant maggots.

Strange mystical forces seem to be gathering around the village of Devil’s End where an ancient barrow is being investigated by Professor Horner (Robin Wentworth). The archaeological dig at the barrow is also being filmed be a television crew, who intend to show live coverage of the event on BBC Three as the Professor attempts to breach the inner chamber at the stroke of midnight. Alarmed by what forces the Professor might unleash, the Doctor (Jon Pertwee) and Jo Grant (Katy Manning) travel to Devil’s End to stop the dig but arrive too late, and the Professor and the Doctor are both enveloped in a freezing blast of energy from inside the barrow.

With the Professor dead and the Doctor frozen in ice, Jo seeks help from the villages. Having seen everything happen on TV, Captain Mike Yates (Richard Franklin) and Sgt Benton (John Levene) take the Brigadier’s helicopter to Devil’s End to go and help Jo and the Doctor. After they arrive the Doctor quickly recovers, leaving them free to explore the village, and together with the help of the white witch Mrs Hawthorn (Damaris Hayman), they discover that the local vicar - Mr Magister - is really the Master (Roger Delgado) who has been using black magic rituals to summon the monstrous Azal to the cavern beneath the church. The Doctor explains that Azal is the last of a race of beings known as the Daemons, their super science is so powerful is appears to work like magic, and their spaceship is actually miniaturized inside the barrow itself.
