Doctor Who - The Enemy of the World to get Special Edition DVD Release

BBC Worldwide has announced that the Patrick Troughton story The Enemy of the World will get a special edition release on March 19th in the UK.  This is one of the stories that was found and released in 2013 but that release was just a DVD with no extras.  Now five years later the fans will finally get a special DVD release of this once missing story.   Hopefully we will be getting a special release of The Web of Fear this year with an animated episode three.  The details for The Enemy of the World Special Edition are below and available for pre order on Amazon.

Even though all episodes were restored in 2013 for the previous DVD release, Peter Crocker from the Restoration Team is using advances in technology since then to go over each one with a fine tooth comb to ensure they are now presented in the best possible quality for this special edition.

Family, friends and colleagues pay tribute to Debbie Watling who played Victoria Waterfield, companion to Patrick Troughton’s doctor. 

Audio commentaries on all six episodes produced by John Kelly.

Doctor Who - "The Power of the Daleks" DVD Extras and Cover Art Revealed

The BBC have reveled the DVD extras and cover art for the upcoming release The Power of the Daleks.  There are extras also for when it is released first on the BBC Store which will not be available on the DVD release.  The Power of the Daleks episode one will be released on Saturday November 5th at 5:50PM UK time and each episode will be released on consecutive days after.  The DVD will be released on Monday November 21st in the UK.  No word on a North America release yet but it will air on BBC America on November 19th.

Doctor Who - The Underwater Menace: The On Again Off Again On Again DVD Release Update

Fear not Zaroff old chap. It looks like our DVD might finally see the light of day.

The mystery of the last Doctor Who DVD to be released has taken another turn.  It appears to be back to being released and this time with the missing episodes one and four to be animated.   Yes animated. You know the same animation that was cancelled earlier this year now seems to be back on again.  This has been a weird release which had a trailer made for it and put on The Moonbase DVD. So fans will be able to own episode two which was found back in 2011 and this will see the release of the only classic episode that hasn't been released at all. Airlock which was found with episode two of The Underwater Menace is on The Aztecs Special edition DVD.  Here is the official statement from BBC Worldwide.

We hope to release ‘The Underwater Menace’ in 2015. We delayed the release to ensure that our publishing schedule is phased appropriately across the year and the episodes will be animated.

Notice they say hope. Hope to release in 2015.  With all the twists and turns this release has been given so far I file this one under I'll believe it when I see it.

Doctor Who - Deep Breath DVD and Blu-ray Release

The Final Classic Doctor Who DVD release

Well, we all knew it was going to happen eventually. Since there are a limited number of classic Doctor Who episodes we all knew that someday the classic DVD range would come to an end. But look what we got!  Not only did we get everything we thought we would but we got hundreds of hours of extras including commentaries, documentaries, interviews and so on. In addition we had several incomplete stories released with animation for the missing episodes. 

Terror of the Zygons DVD Review

I have been watching a fair amount of Doctor Who this year and watching this latest DVD release has certainly been one of the many highlights for me. “Terror of the Zygons” is one of the earliest stories I had seen and during the late 70's to early 80's it was one I had seen quite often. Since then though I had not seen it until this month and I was happy to see that it has held up fairly well. Known for the first and up to this point, the only appearance of the Zygons, this story is also famous for the not so great effect of the Loch Ness monster creature. So does the excellent story and acting off set the poor effect or other short comings?

Doctor Who New Releases From BBC Home Entertainment - October & November Highlights

BBC America Home Entertainment has released some details on their Doctor Who DVD releases leading up to the 50th Anniversary.  Unlike in the UK the North America Tenth Planet release has not been moved up to October.  The Tenth Planet and Terror of the Zygons are ones fans have been clamoring for and they finally get the DVD treatment.

Cybermen Highlight Doctor Who DVD Updated Release Schedule

The new Doctor Who DVD release schedule for the UK has been released in the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine and this Autumn sees a Cybermen fest.  It has been revealed that the Moonbase will have its two missing episodes animated and be released in October while the recently announced Tenth Planet will be out in November.  Both stories have their missing stories animated by Planet 55 Studios the same studio that did The Reign of Terror. 

DWM also reports that The Underwater Menace will be getting the animated treatment and we will see the recovered episode sometime in 2014.

Doctor Who DVD Releases Announced. Kind Of Disappointed With One

The Doctor Who website has announced a list of upcoming DVD releases.  While some good news I was greatly disappointed with one and surprised by another.  We finally have confirmation for the last two complete Doctor Who stories Tom Bakers "Terror of the Zygons" and the colorized Jon Pertwee story "The Mind of Evil" which also has a great performance by Roger Delgado as The Master.

In what was a surprise they are releasing the web story "The Scream of the Shalka' which stars Richard E. Grant as The Doctor and quite before Utopia  Derek Jacobi as The Master.  This was an animated web episode that aired on the Doctor Who website back in 2003.

What I find to be greatly disappointing is the release of "The Ice Warriors".  Apparently they will not be animating the missing episodes 2 and 3 like they have before with "The Invasion" and this months release of "The Reign of Terror" but instead are reconstructing them with telesnaps and audio.  This is BS and inexcusable.  Why bother releasing it at all.  You take the time to animate the other two releases but go half ass with The Ice Warriors. Shame on you Doctor Who Restoration Team and BBC DVD.  That is just poor judgement on your part and I'm sure I'm not the only one who is pissed and disappointed with this news.

Plus of course we have the typical special editions along with the "Spearhead from Space" Blu Ray which will be the only classic blu ray release.  Here is the full list of releases and UK dates.

The TARDIS arrives in a field near Paris during The French Revolution. Soon the time travellers find an old farm house where aristocrats Rouvray (Laidlaw Dalling) and d’Argenson (Neville Smith) are seeking help from a secret group that has been saving people from the guillotine and helping them escape to England. When they are discovered by Revolutionary soldiers, the Doctor (William Hartnell) becomes trapped in the burning house, Ian (William Russell) is captured and imprisoned, and Barbara (Jacqueline Hill) and Susan (Carol Anne Ford) are sent to the guillotine.

The Doctor escapes from the house and travels to Paris to rescue his friends, who have become embroiled in the plans of the English spy James Stirling, who is posing as Lemaitre (James Cairncross), the governor of the Conciergerie Prison. The Doctor has to adopt the disguise of the Regional Officer of the Provinces to help save Ian, Barbara, and Susan, which invariably brings him to the attention of the tyrant Robespierre (Keith Anderson) - while Ian and Barbara spy on a secret meeting between Paul Barras (John Law) and Napoleon Bonaparte (Tony Wall) - the future ruler of France. As history runs its course, Robespierre is shot in the jaw and thrown in prison, while the Doctor and his companions escape to continue their adventures in time and space.

2013 Doctor Who DVD Releases So Far

The new Doctor Who Magazine has also announced the DVD and Blu Ray releases for the first half of next year.  So far this list isn't all that exciting and quite a bit disappointing.  The highlights is the release of the only classic release Blu Ray.  Spearhead From Space will be the only classic story released on Blu Ray as it is the only complete story shot on film. It will have a special 45 minute documentary on Jon Pertwee that will be worth the price alone.  Terror of the Zygons finally sees a release but not until June.  Not happy about that and not happy that you need to buy The Aztecs Special Edition to get the newly found William Hartnell Galaxy Four Episode "Airlock" that really sucks.  We do get a Rein of Terror release with missing episodes animate like The Invasion years ago but still no word on The Mind of Evil release yet.

Here is an updated release schedule for North American Doctor Who DVD releases now including The Ambassadors of Death for an October release.  Still no new on The Mind of Evil and Terror of the Zygons but with DVD info being released it is only a matter of time before they get a release date.  Also rumored is the surviving footage of Shada and 30 Years in the Tardis get a release in the Legacy Box set.  No news yet on The Reign of Terror with animated episodes 4 + 5 and The Tenth Planet (Missing Ep 4 and The Ice Warriors (Missing Ep 2 + 3) which will probably get animated missing eps also.

First things first, hello! As you will all probably notice, it's my first post here for The Knights, with hopefully many more to come! If you like what you read, please feel free to catch up with me on Twitter @LonelyGod

Along with the general geek news and thoughts, you'll find my posts mainly focusing on Classic Doctor Who. Since last year I have started collecting the DVD releases (or soundtracks where appicable), and working my way through viewing them all, not in any particular order. To date I've seen a vast amount, but starting from today I'll be recording my thoughts and views on some of these older stories.

As you would have no doubt noticed, and therefore probably stopped reading by now, this first post is concerned with a story which has a rather dodgy, and in my opinion unfair, reputation within the fanbase - Timelash.

I want to start by saying that I don't agree with with popular fan opinion, so this won't be the usual list of things wrong with the story, or knocking the production values. You can see what I thought after the break...
