Marvel Vs DC - Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, The Flash, The Defenders and more

The imaginary war between Marvel and DC has just raised the bar with all that has come out of this year's San Diego Comic Con.  In addition to a slew of clips and trailers, some of which have not made it to the internet yet, there was plenty of news.

Doctor Strange Trailer - Nice!!

Lots to cover this time out so let's get to it.

Doctor Strange - First up - this -

Batman Vs Superman – Okay, this is it.  The all important movie that would make or break the franchise.  First off, how was the movie?  Well, it could have been worse and it could have been better.  There are quite a few nitpicks that I could go over but others have done a better job –

Overall I enjoyed the film and don’t think it was as bad as critics say.  I can understand some of the criticism toward the Superman character.  He is still not right in the film.  But apparently that is what we have so time to get over it.  Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot are perfect playing Batman and Wonder Woman and in the case of Wonder Woman, she is the best part of the film by far.  The worst part was Lex Luthor played by Jessie Eisenberg.  This was not Lex Luthor, more like the Joker really.  This was glaringly bad and if someone told me they hated the movie because of this then I would have to concede that point.  There is a lot to look past in the film for sure but there is a lot to like about the film.  I do like the dark tone and look of the film.  I feel that if they tried to tone this down a bit it would look too much like Marvel’s universe and so I am fine with it as it is now. 

Marvel Vs. DC - Fall TV, Zach Snyder, Wonder Woman and Spielberg

A fairly busy period for Marvel and DC.  With the fall season almost upon us and studios getting geared up for 2016 and beyond, there seems to be a lot going on.  As always we look at some of the conflicts between Marvel and DC but let's begin with some rumors.

Marvel v DC Movie Release Dates

So many movies coming out from Marvel and DC - lets take a look.  Obviously most of these dates are subject to change, especially movies further out.  I am uncertain of the accuracy of these dates as different web sites list different dates and some of the more official sites don't seem to be updated.

2019

I will be interested in seeing what happens in May 2016.  The Batman v Superman movie is going to be huge and important to this entire plan for DC.  They cannot go up against the established Captain America.  Both films will suffer in the end and DC has more riding on this than Marvel.  Expect DC to move to April or June.

Later in 2016 the battle of the unknowns will be interesting as well.  If Batman v Superman sets up Shazam and Sandman properly then we should see some big hits.  Marvel's next new superhero introduction won't be a given by any stretch.

2017 will have three big DC movies and Marvel may counter with some heavy hitters of their own.  It would appear that Guardians is going to be a huge hit in 2014 and so should do well again.  It depends on what Marvel has in store for the rest of its films in 2017.

2018 should be all Marvel even with Man of Steel 2 there. Still, if DC has managed to have duplicated Marvel's success then by 2018 there could be more DC movies in the works.

I don't expect any battles per say but if both franchises give each other a little distance, both should do well.

SDCC - WB Reveals Gal Gadot As Wonder Woman

Well?  What do you all think of Gal Gadot in her Wonder Woman garb?

New Creative Team For Wonder Woman

DC has announced a new creative team to take over for Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chang.  It will be the husband and wife duo of David and Meredith Finch.  Their first issue will be in November and they promise to bring the book to a more mainstream presence and less on the Greek mythology that the book is centered on now. Marvel V. DC - The Next Stage - Looking at the Schedules for 2014 and Beyond!

Well, WB has released a very ambitious plan for the DC universe that certainly mimic’s Marvel’s success over the past few years. 

May 2016 - BATMAN V. SUPERMAN

July 2016 - SHAZAM

Xmas 2016 - SANDMAN

May 2017 - JUSTICE LEAGUE

July 2017 - WONDER WOMAN

XMAS 2017 - UNTITLED GREEN LANTERN/THE FLASH TEAM-UP

MAY 2018 - MAN OF STEEL 2

This looks pretty cool but how will Shazam and Sandman do is a big question.  Man of Steel was not the massive success that Iron Man was and Green Lantern was not a determining factor in all this either.  Certainly the Batman franchise has been healthy but without Christian Bale and no stand alone Batman film in the plan, one has to wonder if DC can keep the momentum going.  The majority of audiences probably can’t tell the difference between DC and Marvel and will just see these as just more superhero films.  This may steer them to the franchise they have grown to know and love, Marvel.  Of course the Marvel path is a few years old now and perhaps the new franchise will be what people want to see, something different with DC.

Movies - Warner Bros Casts Wonder Woman For Superman/Batman Movie

Warner Brothers has announced the actress that will be playing Wonder Woman/Diana Prince for the 2015 Superman/Batman movie.  Joining Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill will be Fast and Furious actress Gal Gadot.  Wonder Woman is one of DC Comics biggest herows and considered one of the Big Three or The Trinity and her casting for this movie leads speculation that the gears are in motion for a Justice League movie in the near future.  I personally hope a Wonder Woman movie might be in development also.

Gina Carano as Wonder Woman?

Ready to rumble in the Amazonian jungle?

Add MMA fighter/actress Gina Carano to the list of stars who would like to play Wonder Woman - assuming the oft-delayed project ever gets off the ground.

Carano, starring in the current Steven Soderberg-directed "Haywire," was asked about the role of the Amazon princess in an interview with Jennifer Vineyard of Vulture:

People have suggested you play Wonder Woman.
I know! We even had a Wonder Woman reference in the film — did you catch it? One of the cops said something to me like, "Oh, chill out, Wonder Woman." And I thought that was so funny. I said to Steven, "You know there's a little rumor about me and Wonder Woman." And he said mischievously, "Oh, that's interesting."

"Haywire" marks Carano's acting debut. She plays a secret agent who hunts down the traitors who betrayed her. And it's an impressive list - Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas and Michael Fassbender.

Erica Durance as Wonder Woman!!

See if you can follow along.  This is a photo of Erica Durance dressed up in the original Wonder Woman costume that was created for David E. Kelley's ill fated Wonder Woman series that was originally slated to air this fall.  The series production was halted after only one episode was filmed.

Finally - Erica Durance will play Wonder Woman.

OK, not really.


The Canadian actress first wore the costume of an "Amazon princess" as Lois Lane on "Smallville," which left many fans clamoring for the real thing. Now she will return to the comic book character for an episode of NBC's "Harry's Law."

But it's not that simple. According to TVLine, Durance will play a "“a psychologically infirm woman who retreats into the persona of the DC Comics heroine to help wreak revenge on perpetrators of domestic abuse.”

Not quite the same thing, is it?

No air date has been set.

Christina Hendricks as Wonder Woman?

Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn has made no secret of the fact that he would like to direct a Wonder Woman movie. His choice for the lead role? Christina Hendricks of "Mad Men." They worked together on his current release, "Drive."

Hendricks? She's interested. She told Vulture:

Sure! I grew up on the TV show, and I had Wonder Woman Underoos, and my brother had a Wonder Woman doll — sorry, Aaron, you're exposed. [Giggles.] And Nicolas said, when we were on set (for "Drive,") "I want you to be Wonder Woman." And I think he is such an extraordinary and exceptional director, that if he asked me to do it, I would do it in a heartbeat.

How Come Wonder Woman Doesn't Get Any Love?

She is one of the more recognizable super hero's in the world and yet during this era of comic book movies she has yet to show up.  Why is that?  Even the attempts to get her another show on television has failed.  Since her debut in All Star Comics way back in December of 1941 Wonder Woman has had a presence in the newsstands and comic book shops ever since.   But there is no movie or plans to even make one.  Yes there has been the stuff that came out in the mid 70's like that horrible Cathy Lee
