Doctor Who - Twice Upon a Time Review
Doctor Who:
Twice Upon a Time
By Steven Moffat
“Doctor, I let you go.”
The 2017 Christmas Special is here and it is a historical one that will be remembered more for the debut of Jodie Whittaker than for Peter Capaldi leaving Doctor Who along with Steven Moffat. This years special is also a little bit more special as it also stars David Bradley as the First Doctor, taking the reins from the late William Hartnell, to join forces in a rare multi Doctor story. Needless to say this story has a full complement of characters. Oh did I mention that Bill returns in this story too? Yes she pops back also as Peter Capaldi is joined once again by Pearl Mackie.

Goodbye to 12 - Doctor Who - The Doctor Falls Review
We celebrate the Peter Capaldi era by revisiting the 12th Doctor's adventures as we count down the days to his last adventure.
Doctor Who:
The Doctor Falls
By Steven Moffat
“No! No! When I say no, you turn back around! Hey! I'm going to be dead in a few hours, so before I go, let's have this out, you and me, once and for all. Winning? Is that what you think it's about? I'm not trying to win. I'm not doing this because I want to beat someone, or because I hate someone, or because, because I want to blame someone. It's not because it's fun and God knows it's not because it's easy. It's not even because it works, because it hardly ever does. I do what I do, because it's right! Because it's decent! And above all, it's kind. It's just that. Just kind. If I run away today, good people will die. If I stand and fight, some of them might live. Maybe not many, maybe not for long. Hey, you know, maybe there's no point in any of this at all, but it's the best I can do, so I'm going to do it. And I will stand here doing it till it kills me. You're going to die too, some day. How will that be? Have you thought about it? What would you die for? Who I am is where I stand. Where I stand, is where I fall. Stand with me. These people are terrified. Maybe we can help, a little. Why not, just at the end, just be kind?”
“The Doctor Falls” is the final episode of Series 10 and for once it was a pretty decent episode but it wasn’t great. Like most of the big series ending stories they try to jam so much into the story. Case in point we have the Cybermen and two versions of the Master. With a cluttered cast this doesn’t really bog the story down as for the most part the Master and Missy plus the Cybermen were not really featured all that much in the story. For the most part it was a story about Bill and The Doctor getting to grips with what had happened to her. Bill had been converted into a Mondasian Cyberman and she’s not all that sure that The Doctor can change her back to human. She also lets him have it about making her wait for ten years and that it’s his fault that this happened to her. To a degree she’s right and it’s a wonder that things that happened to Bill hasn’t happened to the companion more often.

Doctor Who Christmas Special Interview With Steven Moffat
It's that time again when there is a new episode of Doctor Who and that means interviews from the BBC Media Centre. Today we continue with the fourth interview with Steven Moffat.
What does Twice Upon A Time have in store for us?
There are some new eerie creatures of glass haunting the Doctor and his friends throughout this story - but what their purpose and what their plan is, and what their time traveling machinations are, is going to be a big surprise to the Doctor.
Were there any sets or locations that you particularly enjoyed working on?

Goodbye to 12 - Doctor Who - World Enough and Time Review
We celebrate the Peter Capaldi era by revisiting the 12th Doctor's adventures as we count down the days to his last adventure.
Doctor Who:
World Enough and Time
By Steven Moffat
“I waited for you.”
A 4 mile spaceship that is tinkering next to a black hole and the escape velocity has made time a bit out of whack. The gravity of the black hole has manipulated time that the part of the ship next to the black hole is moving very slow while the bottom of the spaceship is moving fast. This becomes a problem later on when The Doctor figures it out when he is desperate to get back to Bill who was shot with a laser right through her chest. What lead us to this point was that the TARDIS landed on the spaceship to conduct a test for Missy. The Doctor picked a distress call and with the aid of Bill and Nardole will go with Missy to investigate what is wrong while he stays in the TARDIS monitoring to make sure Missy can be good. Apparently the travelers were detected and what is on the bottom of the ship seems to be coming up to the top to take whoever is human and whatever it is has the janitor Jorj frighten enough to kill whoever is human and to The Doctors horror he does.

Doctor Who Christmas Special Interview With David Bradley
It's that time again when there is a new episode of Doctor Who and that means interviews from the BBC Media Centre. Today we continue with the second interview with David Bradley who plays The 1st Doctor.
How did you get the call?
Well it all started with An Adventure in Space and Time (the 2013 biopic about the start of Doctor Who) a few years ago. Mark Gatiss who wrote that tapped me on the shoulder one day at an event in London and asked me to play Hartnell in that, and I was absolutely thrilled. I said yes even before I’d seen a script! Doing that was a great experience but most of it was getting under the skin of this amazing actor and quite complicated man which Mark’s script captured beautifully I thought.
After that wrapped I thought “Well, I’ve done it now. That’s my Doctor Who adventure over” I’d sort

Doctor Who Christmas Special Interview With Mark Gatiss
It's that time again when there is a new episode of Doctor Who and that means interviews from the BBC Media Centre. Today we continue with the second interview with Mark Gatiss who plays The Capatan.
What have we got to look forward to in this episode?
This is not just a Christmas special, it’s also the end of Steven Moffat’s era and the end of Peter Capaldi’s era. It’s got two Doctors interacting, two TARDISes, Bill is back, and there’s a very interesting new threat. Plus there’s lots of snow, lots of laughs and lots of tears and - not only that - we get to meet the Thirteenth Doctor. Lucky for some!

Doctor Who Christmas Special Interview With Pearl Mackie
It's that time again when there is a new episode of Doctor Who and that means interviews from the BBC Media Centre. So to kick things off we start with the first interview with Pearl Mackie who plays Bill.
What have we got to look forward to in this episode?
There’s so much! We’ve got not one but two TARDISes, and we travel in both of them which is pretty exciting. We’ve also got three Doctors - that’s pretty amazing. Obviously we’ve got the current Doctor who we all know and love, but we’ve also got the First Doctor played by David Bradley - who is phenomenal. The current Doctor, who’s dying but refusing to regenerate at the start of the story, meets him as a way of dealing with his current struggles. The interaction between those two is great - really funny, but also surprising and very moving in places. And of course there’s also the regeneration, when the Twelfth Doctor becomes the Thirteenth Doctor!
Were you excited to get the call asking you back?

Goodbye to 12 - Doctor Who - The Eaters of Light Review
We celebrate the Peter Capaldi era by revisiting the 12th Doctor's adventures as we count down the days to his last adventure.
Doctor Who:
The Eaters of Light
By Rona Munro
“Well, it didn't work. You got a Roman legion slaughtered, and you made the deadliest creature on this planet very, very cross indeed. To protect a muddy little hillside, you doomed your whole world.”
The TARDIS lands in 2nd Century Scotland to try and find out what happened to the 9th Legion. Bill is so sure that they will find the 9th Legion that she wagers with The Doctor about it. He is skeptical but encourages her to go off and find her Romans. As Bill heads off one way The Doctor and Nardole head off on another where they come across a village. This village is very special as it has the gate which their gatekeeper is in charge of protecting. The gate is a portal to another dimension which is home to a creature that was released to destroy the 9th Legion. The problem is that the creature is still out there and so is Bill with all that remains of the 9th Legion.

Goodbye to 12 - Doctor Who - Empress of Mars Review
We celebrate the Peter Capaldi era by revisiting the 12th Doctor's adventures as we count down the days to his last adventure.
Doctor Who:
Empress of Mars
By Mark Gatiss
“There will be more, you idiot. The Hive is active. Don't you see? They'll do anything to defend their home planet.”
The Doctor, Bill and Nardole appear to be at the Florida NASA center to watch the incoming images from the Valkyrie space probe. When they eventually see the words “God save the queen” under the polar ice caps it prompts them to head to Mars in the year 1881. There they find, well The Doctor and Bill as Nardole is taken away by the TARDIS, a group of her Majesties army who have been aided by an Ice Warrior to take Mars in the name of Queen Victoria. Friday, the Ice Warrior named after the character in the Robinson Crusoe book, has promised them jewels and riches in exchange for help to back to Mars. But The Doctor is pretty suspicious of this and thinks Friday has a higher motive in hand and his hunch is about to become a reality once they find the area of the Ice tombs and the Empress herself.

Goodbye to 12 - Doctor Who - The Lie of the Land Review
We celebrate the Peter Capaldi era by revisiting the 12th Doctor's adventures as we count down the days to his last adventure.
Doctor Who:
The Lie of the Land
By
Toby Whitehouse
“Hidden amongst 7 billion, there is someone like you. That’s why I put up with the rest of them.”
The final part of what has been known as The Monk trilogy has finally aired and I have to say that the final part of this story was pretty boring. I did I found it pretty dull and I could not wait for the episode to end. It came across pretty tedious also. They spent way too much time with Bill trying to find and then get to The Doctor. I mean they spent way too much time that I lost interest. To me it seemed that each part of this trilogy just got worse from episode to episode and “The Lie of the Land” was by far the worst one.

Deep in the heart of nowhere, near a place called Abbey Marston, there’s a caravan site. The perfect place to get away from it all. Close by, there’s a stone circle they used for human sacrifice in olden times. A little further afield, there’s an old RAF research station, where they did hushhush things in the War.
There’s only one rule: the use of radios, cassette recorders and portable televisions is strictly forbidden.
People come here to get away from it all, you see. No-one wants to hear the noise. No-one wants to hear the voices in the static…
No-one wants to hear the ghosts.

Goodbye to 12 - Doctor Who - The Pyramid at the End of the World Review
We celebrate the Peter Capaldi era by revisiting the 12th Doctor's adventures as we count down the days to his last adventure.
Doctor Who:
The Pyramid at the End of the World
By Peter Harness and
Steven Moffat
“Bill, what have you done?”
“The Pyramid at the End of the World” is the second part of three of the story that features The Monks and their attempt to take over the world. This story was co-written by Peter Harness and Steven Moffat and it more or less sets up what will happen in the next story “The Lie of the Land” which will be written by Toby Whitehouse and is the conclusion of this three part story. Like what I wrote last week I really cannot grade this story until I see all three parts but so far I liked “Extremis” a lot better than “The Pyramid at the End of the World”.

Goodbye to 12 - Doctor Who - Extremis Review
We celebrate the Peter Capaldi era by revisiting the 12th Doctor's adventures as we count down the days to his last adventure.
Doctor Who:
Extremis
By Steven Moffat
“Doctor, will you read the Veritas?”
Extremis is the first part of a three part story that is penned by Steven Moffat while the next two episodes will have different writers along with Steven Moffat. I have to admit that I had to watch Extremis a couple of times to figure out what was going as it was a typical Steven Moffat story with a lot of stuff going on. In fact that is one of the reasons to watch it again as there was a lot going on that you definitely didn’t pick everything up on first viewing. You might not get everything on the second viewing either but anyway Extremis was a better story than anything that Steven Moffat wrote for last season.

Doctor Who:
Oxygen
By
Jamie Mathieson
“Tell me a joke before you leave.”
Space Zombies, I’m not a big fan of zombie movie or even zombie television shows so when I saw the trailer for Oxygen I was a bit hesitant if I would like this particular story at all. Well once I finished watching “Oxygen” that was not the case at all. I really enjoyed it but not necessarily for the zombies; luckily they were not featured much, but for the overall message and what happened at the end.

I Just Discovered How Bad the New Star Trek Series Is
Nurse - give me another dose of painkiller, stat.
I say this as someone who is old enough to have watched the original series as it was first broadcast back when Gorns roamed the planets of our imagination. I still remember waiting in line for "The Motion Picture" on opening night, when a college friend dramatically announced for local TV cameras as he purchased his ticket - "One for Star Trek - PLEASE." I fondly recall gathering with friends to watch (and record with the latest technology, something called videotape) the premiere of "Next Generation." With "Discovery," I find myself wanting a Vulcan mind meld to erase it from my memory.
Let's begin with the premise that "Discovery" takes place in the Star Trek universe about ten years before the original series. From a practical standpoint, this might be the worst decision of all. Thanks to CGI advances, the tech of the new series outshines the original series with the brightness of a supernova. In a way, this cannot be avoided. But at least "Enterprise" made an effort to make its tech look underdeveloped when compared to other series.
Also, in no particular order ...
Who are these villains? They aren't Klingons. They don't behave like Klingons. They don't look like Klingons. And all the subtitles are annoying.
The Spock Family Tree: Remember in "Star Trek V" (no winner itself), when we were surprised to learn that Spock had a half-brother? Now we learn he has a half-sister, sort of. Whatever happened to "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations"? Or is this simple laziness on the part of the writers?
Speaking of Vulcans: Did the character of Michael Burnham learn nothing while being raised on a planet of cold-blooded humanoids? What kind of Vulcan betrays their captain? What kind of Starfleet takes her back?
These are just a few examples. I could go on and on, but I have spent far too much time on this already.
What is most frustrating is that all of these issues could have been dealt with - dare I say? - logically.
The award for Best Use of Spores on a "Star Trek" series still belongs to "This Side of Paradise." |
- For God's sake, set the series in a time past the other series. Take advantage of the latest special effects technology to make it look like it should - new and exciting.
- For Kahless' sake, find a new race of villains. Someone new. Someone we have not seen before. "Deep Space Nine" excelled at this.
- If you must have another human-Vulcan hybrid character, fine. But do so with a little more originality. Minimize the Sarek character as an adviser to Michael Burnham's Vulcan family. Make Burnham a Vulcan agitator or spy, working on behalf of Starfleet military. Having her suddenly turn on her captain with little explanation is - here I go again - highly illogical.
In short, whatever happened to "explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before"? The new series does none of these things. It has broken its promise while showing little promise.
I wanted to love this series. Failing that, I wanted to like this series. Failing that, I wanted to be able to say "nice try." I can't. Phasers on kill, Mr. Sulu. I'd rather spend my hard-earned quatloos on something else.
* Sickbay? Seriously? This never came to mind before, but they couldn't come up with a better name? Following this nomenclature, why don't they call the restroom "pissbay"? Or Ten Forward "drunkbay"?
Goodbye to 12 - Doctor Who - Knock Knock Review
We celebrate the Peter Capaldi era by revisiting the 12th Doctor's adventures as we count down the days to his last adventure.
Doctor Who:
Knock Knock
By Mike Bartlett
“This is the part of my life you're not in.”
“Knock Knock” is mainly about Bill and her friends looking to rent a house while at university. They were not having any luck until an older man offered them a house for rent that was cheap and had enough bedrooms to accommodate everyone. But of course if it’s too good to be true it genuinely is as The Doctor who is helping Bill move in is instantly alerted to something not right about the house. The Doctor senses something alien and as usual he is correct as the whole house seems to be alive and it’s alive and infested with alien bugs. The creepy thing is the house won’t let you leave and it seems to open up the walls and sucks you in.

Goodbye to 12 - Doctor Who - Thin Ice Review
We celebrate the Peter Capaldi era by revisiting the 12th Doctor's adventures as we count down the days to his last adventure.
Doctor Who:
Thin Ice
By
Sarah Dollard
“I don’t have the luxury of outrage.”
The third episode of Series 10 of Doctor is the story written by Sarah Dollard titled “Thin Ice”. It takes place during 1814 during the last Frost Fair on the river Thames. But there is something not right with this Frost Fair as people seem to have been disappearing and there are also green lights under the ice. Not to mention a giant creature chained down in the Thames whose excrement seems to burn a lot stronger and longer than coal. I do believe that scene where Bill goes “No Sh…..” is one of the funniest in the new series in quite some time.
