Doctor Who - The Husbands of River Song Review (Some Spoilers)

Doctor Who:
The Husbands of River Song
By Steven Moffat

“Every night is the last night for something. Every Christmas is the last Christmas.”

The Doctor Who Christmas Specials have been hit or miss throughout the shows revival and now we have the 11th Christmas Special and the 6th one that Steven Moffat has written.  While the Christmas Specials are supposed to be light hearted and fun we have had some that have been darker and taken a more serious tone like The Snowmen and A Christmas Carole both written by Moffat.  I tend to like the stories that take a more serious tone and keep the silliness to a minimum.  So when it was announced that River Song will be making her appearance in this year’s Christmas story I had some reservations about The Husbands of River Song.

SHADO News - The World's of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson - Soundtracks, UFO on Blu-ray and Thunderbirds 1965

December 2015

By Ken Parker

Three years ago today Gerry Anderson passed away. My love for Gerry's shows over the years helped shape, to a slight degree, the person I am today. I do not say that the influence was large but my interests and hobbies were certainly directed by Gerry and Sylvia's work. Gerry's death was a sadness that has ever been associated with a good friend of mines passing a short few weeks later. My friend, Dave was a fan of so many things including Gerry Anderson. Dave never met Gerry but I know he would have liked that. I feel that Dave did meet Gerry wherever they are now and Dave told Gerry about all the reasons people loved his shows.

Since Gerry's passing there has been a lot of effort in keeping his legacy alive with merchandise and revival's of some of his later work. In addition to blu-ray releases and a new Thunderbirds TV series, Gerry's son, Jamie has brought life to some of his father's unseen work. I feel confident in Gerry's legacy. I share with you my 2012 tribute video that I put together shortly after his passing.

Doctor Who - Christmas Special 2015: Peter Capaldi Interview

We have three interviews from the BBC Media Centre for the 2015 Doctor Who Christmas Special The Husbands of River Song.  Today is The Doctor himself Peter Capaldi

What can you tell us about the Doctor Who Christmas special this year?
Well the Christmas special is very Christmassy, which I’m sure everyone will be relieved to hear. It finds the Doctor in a Dickensian kind of world, in a Christmas card sort of world which he’s been brought to in order to do a favour for a king. So there’s quite a festive spirit to the episode. But the favour is more complex and isn’t exclusively for the benefit of the king, but more for the benefit of the king’s consort.

What is your favourite scene from this episode?

Doctor Who - Christmas Special 2015: Alex Kingston Interview

We have three interviews from the BBC Media Centre for the 2015 Doctor Who Christmas Special The Husbands of River Song.  Up now Alex Kingston.

What was it like to come back?
I was quite surprised when I was asked to come back, but I was happy to because I just thought it would be great fun. It’s such a great character, she’s become so beloved by lots of fans and I’ve had them saying it would be so great for her to come back and to see her interacting with Peter Capaldi’s Doctor. I was actually thrilled when Steven decided he wanted to explore that too.

What did you think of the script?

Doctor Who - Christmas Special 2015: Steven Moffat Interview

We have three interviews from the BBC Media Centre for the 2015 Doctor Who Christmas Special The Husbands of River Song.  First up Steven Moffat.

Can you give us an introduction to the episode you’ve written this year?
The Doctor is an all new man and has been for a while. It may have slipped his mind that out there, in a very tangled and complicated way, is his wife that has never seen this face before and doesn’t even know about this incarnation. We’re about to stand with the Doctor and see what River is like when she doesn’t know he’s looking. We’re about to see what River thinks of Matt Smith turning into Peter Capaldi.

What made you want to write this episode?

Doctor Who - Last Christmas Review

It is a week from today until Christmas and that means the 11th Doctor Who Christmas Special.  We take a look back at last years Christmas Special which was Peter Capaldi's first.

Doctor Who:
Last Christmas
By Steven Moffat

“Santa Claus does not do the scientific explanation.”

It’s Christmas and everyone is gathering together with friends and family to celebrate the festive holiday either for religious beliefs or not.  But most of all a huge number of people around the world celebrate Christmas with something altogether different in mind and that would be the annual Doctor Who Christmas Special.  In fact this was the 10th year in a row that Doctor Who fans will be watching a Doctor Who episode on Christmas day and this time will be treated to the first one with Peter Capaldi as The Doctor.   Last Christmas is also boasting a unique meet up between The Doctor and a certain resident of the North Pole.  But was it good as a Christmas pudding or will it be a Scrooge and give us a humbug.

Doctor Who - The Legends of Ashildr Synopsis

Out now is a book based on the Maisie Williams series 9 character Ashildr.  If you are a fan of this character and want to know what she was up to while she was immortal and was living her long life.

Ashildr, a young Viking girl, died helping the Doctor and Clara to save the village she loved. And for her heroism, the Doctor used alien technology to bring her back to life. Ashildr is now immortal – The Woman Who Lived.

Since that day, Ashildr has kept journals to chronicle her extraordinary life. The Legends of Ashildr is a glimpse of some of those stories: the terrors she has faced, the battles she has won, and the treasures she has found.

These are tales of a woman who lived longer than she should ever have lived – and lost more than she can even remember.

An original novel featuring the Twelfth Doctor as played by Peter Capaldi, and Ashildr as played by Maisie Williams.

Three new battles for The War Doctor

1.1 The Innocent

As the Daleks mass their time fleet for a final assault on Gallifrey, something ancient is waiting for them at Omega One. And a sacrifice must be made.

Arch-manipulator and Time Lord strategist, Cardinal Ollistra receives shock news of the Doctor’s death.

Meanwhile, on the planet Keska, a parochial war has returned to plague a peaceful civilisation after decades of tranquillity. But how can such a war have any connection with the great Time War which, at any one moment in the whole of eternity, could threaten to tear the universe apart?

If only the Doctor were still alive.

1.2 The Thousand Worlds

With the high-ranking Time Lord Seratrix behind enemy lines, the War Doctor finds himself assigned to a rescue mission. But any room for manoeuvre is severely restricted by an area of space known as the Null Zone.

Times have changed on Keska, and a countdown to destruction is beginning.

But who are the Taalyens and what is their part in the great and terrifying Dalek plan?

1.3 The Heart of the Battle

Trapped in a citadel swarming with Daleks, the Time Lord rescue force must find a way to overcome insurmountable odds. With the Daleks apparently planning to rule the Null Zone, perhaps their thirst for universal conquest and victory has been quenched…

The War Doctor doesn’t believe so — but how can he prove it without destroying any chance of peace?

As the countdown to the destruction of Keska proceeds, a deadly choice must be made... A choice that will define this Doctor, and perhaps forever cast him in the role of ‘monster’.

Marvel vs. DC - Batman v Superman, Captain America: Civil War, Legends of Tomorrow, Jessica Jones and Supergirl

The imaginary war between Marvel and DC that I have so excitedly embraced has begun to step it up a notch with the coming of the Batman v Superman trailer.  Marvel is fighting back with Captain America: Civil War.  Meanwhile on television, it is mayhem.

Batman vs. Superman Trailer - Finally.

I would say that this trailer does a good job in keeping my interest in the film and while there was one OMG moment, the rest of the trailer looked just good.  There is also quite a bit of spoilers in there as well.  I am looking forward to it, of course but I am still worried that it will disappoint.

Doctor Who - The Android Invasion Review

The Android Invasion aired 40 years ago from November 22 to December 13.  See what we thought about this classic Doctor Who Adventure from 1975.

Doctor Who:
The Android Invasion
By Terry Nation

“Is that finger loaded?”

The Doctor and Sarah still trying to get back to Earth and UNIT headquarters end up on what appears to be Earth.  Smells like Earth, feels like Earth and definitely looks like Earth but something just doesn’t seem right. After watching a UNIT soldier running off a cliff and falling to his death the two travelers get shot at.  The Doctor and Sarah make their way to a village called Devesham which happens to be near a Space Defense Station.  Everything about Devesham seems out of the ordinary also.  The pub has freshly minted money, a brand new dart board and telephones that do not work.

Then the villagers show up and they are a strange lot.  They do not like strangers in their village and do not treat The Doctor and Sarah all that kindly.  Then the UNIT soldier who apparently killed himself shows up at the pub very much alive.   This does get The Doctor thinking that they are definitely not on Earth and there is something very much wrong with this village.  It appears they are on a planet made by the Kraals I which they are using to practice for an invasion of Earth. An invasion that they will use their androids to achieve unless The Doctor and Sarah can find a way of warning Earth and stopping the Kraals.

We asked Peter how is the Doctor going to cope with meeting River Song again?

“There’s a very different dynamic,” Peter replies. “As you’ll see, she doesn’t know it’s him at first. She can’t be convinced that it is, so she’s sort of not interested in him! He gets a taste of his own medicine, from her. She treats him very coldly, and flirts with a lot of other people in front of him. He doesn’t get any flirting, which I think upsets him. Eventually – finally! – she recognises him. But then another element comes into play and… well, you’ll have to wait and see. But it’s fun…”

Doctor Who - Hell Bent Review (Spoilers)

Doctor Who:
Hell Bent
By Steven Moffat

“You said memories become stories when we forget them. Maybe some of them become songs.”

The Clara Who series finale err, wait a minute, The Doctor Who series finale Hell Bent has to go down as one of the better Moffat finales, but far from great, since the show came back onto our TV screens back in 2005.  One of the faults and there are many of Steven Moffat is his inability to give us a properly written series finale without going for the big production of bringing back tons of characters including the kitchen sink.   This time he bridges the series finale along through three stories to give us a story that wraps up the Clara era pretty well which we all thought was done two weeks ago in Face the Raven.

Doctor Who - Hell Bent - Review by Ken Parker (Spoilers)

“Hell Bent” is an interesting episode that once again, has broken fandom in half. Despite many people liking “Heaven Sent”, there were many who did not like it because it was too different. This episode really follows along that path.

The Doctor is now on Gallifrey and he is there just to get Clara back. Everything is all about saving Clara. This whole thing about the Hybrid? Forget it. So the Doctor does get her back but at what price. Clara can't believe the Doctor did all this and is risking terrible disaster. She is willing to let things go and die as she was supposed to. The Doctor will have none of it and sort of loses his mind. In the end it appears that the Hybrid is indeed the Doctor and Clara together and so Clara dying would eliminate that problem. The Doctor decides to erase her memory of her time with the Doctor. This worked once before with Donna, why not again. Clara will have none of it and alters the device so that perhaps the Doctor will lose his memory of her. In one of the better twists in the series we see the answer to who has forgotten whom and it is an perfectly executed twist.
