Will Muschamp is a Gator, not a Padawan: Football coach baffled by 'Star Wars' question

This, apparently is not one of the plays practiced by the Florida Gators.
Will Muschamp is coach of the undefeated Florida Gators college football team.

When it comes to "Star Wars," though, don't expect Muschamp to be calling on The Force to help his team defeat Coach Nick Saban and Alabama on Saturday. He's not, as the video of a press conference makes clear, a big fan of the film franchise. But at least he's a good sport about it.

William Shatner continues feud with George Takei in new book

Five-year mission, 40-year feud.
William Shatner apparently does not listen to Capt. James T. Kirk's advice.

In "Star Trek II," Kirk snaps at Dr. Leonard McCoy when he learns he is about to cross paths with his former lover, Carol Marcus, who is the mother of his son: "As a physician, you of all people should appreciate the danger of re-opening old wounds."

One of our planets is missing: Scientists say solar system may have once included a 5th 'giant'

Have you seen this planet?
It's complicated.

Numbers and theories, computer simulations and gravitational lensing (don't ask because we have no idea).

Discovery News is reporting that scientists believe a fifth "giant planet" - in addition to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune - once was part of our solar system. The theory is supported by a new set of computer simulations by David Nesvorny of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo. According to the website:

Nesvorny models place a fifth hefty planet, several dozen times the mass of the Earth at various possible locations in the outer solar system: midway between Saturn and Uranus, and just beyond Neptune. In this game of orbital musical chairs, the fifth planet was ejected after a tussle with Jupiter –- sort of a celestial King Kong vs. Godzilla.

'Dr. Who Confidential' axed by BBC3

Dr. Who has defeated The Master, but this time lost to The Controller.

In a cost-saving move, BBC controller Zai Bennett is dropping the ax on "Dr. Who Confidential" at the end of its current run, The Guardian reported. Said a spokeswoman:
"Doctor Who Confidential has been a great show for BBC3 over the years but our priority now is to build on original British commissions, unique to the channel."

The official synopsis of Ridley Scott's mysterious 'Prometheus'

This still photo from "Prometheus" doesn't give anything away, does it?
Two of the epic sci fi film franchises - "Blade Runner" and "Alien" - were brought to life by director Ridley Scott.

We're calling "Blade Runner" a franchise because it's been released in more versions than we care to count. Plus, Scott is making either a prequel or sequel to the film that originally starred Harrison Ford.

But first, Scott will be releasing "Prometheus." It, too, is shrouded in mystery. It's been connected to the "Alien" series. And disconnected.

What sank the 'Aquaman' TV series?

Arthur "Aquaman" Curry may be the King of the Seven Seas, but even he was a casualty of television network politics and profits. That's the message in an outstanding post by Michelle Ealey at sciencefiction.com

In short, the CW in 2006 ordered an "Aquaman" pilot starring Justin Hartley. Two of his co-stars were Ving Rhames and Lou Diamond Philips. The pilot was well-received.

And that was the end. Hartley went on to star as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow on "Smallville." Rhames can be seen next in "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol." Phillips had a run with "Stargate: Universe."

In her post, Ealey explains exactly what happened. It's worth checking out to learn a little about how things work - or don't work - in Hollywood.

    Hugh Jackman discusses Wolverine's future

    "Get the point, Bub?"
Despite being part of the X-Men, the character of Wolverine has always been a bit of an outsider. He plays for the X Team, sure, but he also stands apart as His Own Man.

That came across loud and clear in the mixed bag that was "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" in 2009.

And the theme continues in an indieWIRE interview with the man who portrays the clawed hero, Hugh Jackman. Some highlights:

On his affinity for playing Logan:
“I love that character. It was the first film I did in America and somehow I lucked upon the greatest of all the superhero roles. His human dilemmas and demons and battles feel more real. I don’t feel like a guy with claws and ridiculous hair. I feel like a guy battling against life.”

Was Captain Kirk a sex addict?

    These are the voyages ...
Was it comedian Eddie Murphy who joked about a certain starship captain's sexual adventures with aliens by saying "let Captain Kirk go where no man has gone before"?

It definitely was Dr. Leonard McCoy who, after watching Kirk space-snuggling with the shape shifter Martia (Iman) in "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," muttered "What is it with you, anyway?"

Now, it's longtime Star Trek writer and producer Brannon Braga saying that Kirk had more on his mind than the Enterprise's five-year mission. "Kirk would be considered a sex addict by today's standards," Braga told startrek.com while defending the Seven of Nine character on "Voyager."

What The Justice League Does On It's Day Off

    Well water ski of coarse.

Robocop? Yes. Michael Fassbender? Not so fast.

The Robocop rumors have created a mess.
Remember that "Michael Fassbender to play title role in new Robocop" movie story?

You're going to find this difficult to believe, but apparently not everything you read on the Internet is 100 percent true. Yes, not even this blog.

Jose Padilha, who will be directing the rebooted Robocop movie, told IFC how the rumor got started:
"I was doing an interview with a Dutch guy because 'Elite Squad' was opening in Holland. They wanted to talk about 'RoboCop' because of (Paul) Verhoeven, the Dutch director (of the original film). So he asked me 'Who is going to be RoboCop?' I said, 'I don't know, I'm not there yet.' 'Who is going to be RoboCop?' 'I don't know!' So he says, "How about Fassbender?" I said, 'I think he's great.' That was it!"

    Happy Birthday, Aquaman!

We're not sure how old 70 is in fish years.
How do you light birthday candles underwater?

Well, if you missed Aquaman's 70th birthday party on Sunday, you'll never know. And we're not telling. (OK, we weren't invited, either.)

His waterlogged friends at The Aquaman Shrine, though, planned a party worthy of the King of the Seven Seas at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles (maybe Sea World was already booked). Among those expected to attend the celebration, according to Hero Complex, were aqua-luminaries Dan Abnett, Tony Bedard, Kurt Busiek, Nick Cardy, J.M. DeMatteis, Ramona Fradon, Pat Gleason, Dan Jurgens, Paul Levitz and Joe Prado.

    Fringe 4.2 Trailer

Here is a trailer for this Fridays Fringe.

Call it 'Logan's Re-run:' Hollywood dusts off yet another remake

"No, my name's Logan. Who's Charlie?"
In 1976, it was Michael York in the starring role and Farrah Fawcett as little more than a piece of scenery.

Today, it's Ryan Gosling and ...

Well, we don't know yet. But we do know a remake of "Logan's Run" is in the works. Gosling, currently in theaters with "Drive," is signed to play the title role, according to Janice Kay at sciencefiction.com. Logan 5 is a "Sandman" in a future society. His job is to track down "runners" - anyone turning 30 who defies the state and refuses to go through the ritual of "renewal." The dark secret - spoiler ahead in case you missed the 1970s - is that renewal is nothing more than state-assisted suicide.

The Lone Ranger will ride again! Yes, with Tonto! And werewolves! Yes, werewolves!

Why didn't anyone think of this sooner?

The Lone Ranger uses silver bullets.

One of the few things that can kill werewolves is silver bullets.

See where we're going with this? Hi-Yo, Silver, indeed.

Hollywood was stunned last month when Disney announced it was pulling the plug on a new Lone Ranger movie, despite the involvement of producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Gore Verbinski, and star Johnny Depp. Now, it appears the studio is having second thoughts.

Deadline is reporting that the project is expected to win re-approval after Bruckheimer, Verbinski and Depp managed to cut the budget from $250 million to $215 million.

Lara Pulver who plays Irene Adler and can be currently seen in the last series of Spooks has hinted at the air date for Sherlock to be in January.

In January… series two of Sherlock will air with the wonderful Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. I think it’s kind of quite hotly anticpated because series one was just incredible. I saw it when I was workin in the States and it was one of the best things I’d seen on TV in a long time… and there’s obviously more to come, which is very exciting. Yeah, it’s great… Steven Moffat is a huge part of Doctor Who but he’s written the episode that I’m doing on Sherlock. He’s an incredible writer

Hollywood scraping the rust off 'Robocop'

    Peter Weller - the original.
In case you have not heard, the 1987 sci fi classic "Robocop" is on the long list of Hollywood movies being remade. Or rebooted. Or, in the case of a crime-fighting, half-man, half-robot, how about recycled?

José Padilha is the director attached to the project. And he thinks he's found his Alex J. Murphy, memorably portrayed in the original by Peter Weller. According to Sandy Schaefer of Screen Rant, Padilha wants Michael Fassbender, recently seen playing the young Magneto in "X-Men: First Class" as his cyber hero.

    More Star Wars Blu-Ray Changes

Watch Hugh Jackman 'break' a professional wrestler's jaw

If you need to promote a movie about boxing robots, what better place than the world of robotic actors - professional wrestling?

Actor Hugh Jackman, who portrays a former boxer-turned-manager in the upcoming "Real Steel," was a guest on WWE "Raw" this week. It didn't take long for the man who also plays Wolverine to stick his claws, er, fist where it did not belong.

The following day, the wrestler punched by Jackman, Dolph Ziggler, tweeted that he had suffered a hairline mandibular fracture - certainly not part of the script, if true.

And give credit to Jackman - he looks like he is having a blast.

If you're having trouble with the video above, click here.

'Captain America 2' unlikely to reach theaters before 2014, Chris Evans says

Not coming soon to a theater near you.
The good news: actor Chris Evans is signed for three Avengers films and three Captain America films.

The bad news: Don't expect to see "Cap 2" until 2014. And don't expect Steve Rogers to make any cameos in the meantime, either.

"Marvel has a lot of balls in the air," Evans told The Playlist, comicbookmovie.com reported. The actor said putting him in "Iron Man 3" or "Thor 2," for example, would count toward the contractual commitment of six total films.

"So if they needed me in a third Cap, and I say ... 'give me $30 million,' well ... they want to avoid that."

On making "The Avengers" with Scarlett Johannson (The Black Widow), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner):
Oh, it's the best. It was like summer camp. You know what I mean? Like, it was fun, it was a character I knew, a character I was comfortable with. I really liked the script. Everyone in the cast ... I've done a million movies with Scarlett. I've known Hemsworth a while, he was great. And everyone is so cool: Downey and Ruffalo and everyone's so ... cool. ... If we all didn't get along, it just could have been such a disaster. But it couldn't have gone better.

Chris Hemsworth to pack his bags for 'Thor 2'

    Hammer time!
Thor better have his Asgardian passport ready.

The Entertainment Weekly website reports that "Thor 2" will take Chris Hemsworth "to other worlds," according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. The movie, he told the site, will “primarily be the journey of that character, of he and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and how the new dynamic with his father (Odin, played by Anthony Hopkins) is working out, as well as what are the broader stakes for The Nine Worlds."

The Nine Worlds is a reference to the planes of existence that are part of the Asgardian mythology.

First, of course, fans will see Thor in "The Avengers" next year. "Thor 2" will not be in theaters before the summer of 2013.

Thor may also be getting a new woman in his life, according to EW. A leading candidate to fill the director's chair is Patty Jenkins, best known for "Monster," which won an Oscar for Charlize Theron in 2003. Nothing has been finalized yet.

'In Time' will not debut on Oct. 28 if Harlan Ellison has his way

Award-winning science fiction author Harlan Ellison has filed a lawsuit to block the Oct. 28 release of "In Time," the movie starring Justin Timberlake.

Ellison, who has a long record of filing and winning lawsuits (just ask "Terminator" director James Cameron), alleges "In Time" uses material from his 1965 short story, "Repent, Harlequin." The story is based on the premise of a "dystopian corporate future in which everyone is allotted a specific amount of time to live,” according to the lawsuit. The new movie? Pretty much the same.

Dr. Who Season 7 won't air until autumn 2012

Unless you have a Tardis, you're going to have to wait a year to see Season 7 of "Dr. Who."

    According to Dr. Who TV:
Doctor Who Magazine has officially confirmed what has been clear for a while now – Series 7 will not air until Autumn 2012.
With the 9 month shoot on the seventh series not beginning until February 2012, it would have been impossible for the traditional Spring start. The best we could hope for would be an Easter special to make the long gap easier to swallow.
It seems likely that only half of Series 7 will be shown in Autumn 2012, with the remainder coming early 2013. This means the Christmas 2012 episode would air in the middle of a series rather than the end.
It would also mean that 2013 would see an eighth series airing in time for the 50th anniversary.

A 'Serenity' sequel? Alan 'Wash' Tudyk has an idea

    Will they fly again?
"Firefly" fans dream of another movie about the characters in 2005's highly entertaining "Serenity."

There are a couple of obvious issues, of course. SPOILER ALERT! (For a six-year-old movie? Well, yeah, just in case.) Two of the former TV show's characters - Alan Tudyk's "Wash" and Ron Glass' "Shepherd" - did not survive the adventures of "Serenity."

    The Fades Episode 2 Trailer

Here is a trailer I found over at Cultfix for the new series The Fades.  I just watched the first episode and thought it was pretty good.

Watch a scene from 'Batman: Year One'

Long before director Christopher Nolan breathed new life into the Batman movie franchise, comic book legend Frank Miller returned the Caped Crusader to his gritty crime-fighting roots in "Batman: Year One."

The 1987 comic was among those, along with Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns," that revived the character, erased the memory of the campy 1960s TV series starring Adam West and directly influenced and led to Tim Burton's "Batman."

Now the two media are coming together. "Batman: Year One" has been developed into a DVD that closely mimics the comic book. Take a look at one of the scenes, above. The DVD will be available for download on Oct. 11 and on DVD on Oct. 18.

You've seen the movie. Now see the extras.

The Blue-ray release of "Captain America: The First Avenger" features deleted scenes, looks behind the making of the movie, and even some "extra" extras.

First, the DVD offers a short about S.H.I.E.L.D, "The Consultant," starring Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson.

Secondly, in case you've been frozen in ice the past few months and missed all of the Internet glimpses of "The Avengers," the DVD includes a peek at the 2012 movie.

"Captain America" hits stores on Oct. 25.

Video: Batman vs. Wiggles the Clown

Need a Tuesday laugh? Watch this video from our friends at College Humor.

    Melancholia Trailer

This movie looks to be interesting.  I am very taken by the look of the film as well as the story.  It could be very much a relationship picture with a Sci-Fi backdrop (sort of what Another Earth looks like).  Both films deal with another planet and it appears that both will focus more on characters than the actual situation, which, frankly, can be a welcome feature.  I am still reeling from all the asteroid collision movies from a few years ago.

Anyway the film is set for a limited release on November 11 but is getting an On-Demand release on October 7.  There seems to be more and more films doing this.  Can't wait to see it.

Look! Up in the sky! Oh, crap! NASA satellite on crash course with Earth

    Heads up, earthlings!
A NASA space satellite may be coming to your neighborhood very soon.

The "bus-sized" Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, according to a report by the International Business Times, is about to make a smashing return to Earth. Exactly where bits of the six-ton satellite will hit the planet is unknown. Exactly when is unclear, too, although Friday is the best guess.

Vin Diesel offers a small peek at 'The Chronicles of Riddick 3'

Vin Diesel as Riddick in "Pitch Black."
"Pitch Black" was among our favorite sci fi films back at the turn of the century.

"The Chronicles of Riddick?" Not so much.

Still, there's much to look forward to as Vin Diesel prepares to bring the title character back to life for "Chronicles of Riddick 3."

The actor is offering this on his Facebook page:

In the spirit of Creative Sundays…I asked the director to send a key frame that I could post it for you.
Concept art and Key frames allow a production to explore possibilities before actually committing to the film. The road to the “R” rating, that so many of you were vocal about, has been a long one. The advantage however, (never empower the negatives) was that we were allowed a really extensive preproduction process. The art work so good, the artists have really outdone themselves in illustrating this world at it’s [sic] early stage.
When this film comes to the screen…know that you willed it into being!

Captain America - Chris Evans - talks about 'The Avengers'

Chris Evans join Scarlett Johannson, among others, in "The Avengers."
Chris Evans, for one, thinks "The Avengers" assembled the right cast of characters - both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

Evans, who plays Captain America in the upcoming film after scoring a major hit with the title role in this summer's film, recently spoke with The Huffington Post on a range of topics. If nothing else, the actor who also played The Human Torch in the "Fantastic Four" movies sounds confident that "The Avengers" has the makings of another superhero franchise.

On bringing Cap 70 years into the future:

"He's in modern day, he has troubles. He actually gets to have things that he might have be able to shoulder, you know what I mean? He can't just put it on his back. He's a fish out of water. Everyone knows he's dead, and he's in a foreign time, and 'The Avengers,' he gets to be a little bit darker, which is nice."

    Kreskin: Yes, he's amazing

    The Amazing Kreskin
Is mentalist Kreskin sci fi? Well, it's hard to tell and that's part of his appeal.

Over the weekend, we witnessed the 76-year-old Kreskin, born George Joseph Kresge, perform at the Iron Horse in Northampton, Mass. And, yes, we walked away wondering How Does He Do It?

Samplings from his highly entertaining appearance:
    • He correctly guessed the amount of change in an audience member's pocket.
    • He asked an audience member "Who is Dozer?" She said it was the name of her dog.
    • He recited a specific street address - from Sacramento, Calif., no less - that an audience member had written on a piece of paper that Kreskin never touched.

Sigourney Weaver on 'Avatar 2' (and 3) and 'Ghostbusters 3'

Our favorite sci fi actress, even in blue.
    "She's dead, Jim."

If anyone uttered these words to "Avatar" director James Cameron about the character Dr. Grace Augustine, he apparently was not paying attention.

Sigourney Weaver, who played the doomed scientist in the 2009 film, says she will be return for both "Avatar 2" and "Avatar 3," which will be filmed back-to-back. She recently told Coming Soon:
“Don’t worry, I will be back. (James Cameron) says no one ever dies in science fiction. He’s told me the stories for the next two movies and I have to say that they’re absolutely wonderful and there’s a real treat in store. Now we just have to make them.”

“I don’t want to go”  the final words uttered by David Tennant as the 10th Doctor might be what a majority of fans were actually thinking as the days were counting down towards his last story.  I myself didn’t want David Tennant to leave the show. I guess after 4 years of enjoying his performance as the Doctor I got a bit selfish, as most fans do, and didn’t want his era to end.  As with most things in life as the quote goes “in life all good things come to an end.”
