My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #2

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #2

by Ken Parker

From the very beginning of this series way back in January I mentioned that one element that I hold as a high standard for film is the visuals. The story must also hold water but the visuals can make or break a movie. They can also take a movie that extra step from being a great movie to a superb one. Films like Metropolis, Forbidden Planet, Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind are examples of this type of criteria. Visuals doesn’t mean just special effects. It is the entire composite which includes camera shot, colors, movement and so on. It is the visuals telling the story. Sci-Fi often relies on visuals to sell an idea. You may not believe in flying saucers but after seeing Close Encounters of the Third Kind, at minimum you now know what they may look like if they existed.

Visuals are also very important in the tone of the film. How it is shot and what the final image looks like is part of the blueprint of the film structure. Star Wars had a visual style with a very straight forward feel. Quick edits and throwback transitions helps set an “Exciting Days of Yesterday” and nostalgic old school feel. Couple that with stereotypical and yet re-imagined stunts and scenes and you have a classic adventure tale.

On the other hand, you take dark imagery along with slow sweeping and gloomy shots and you have a different type of movie. That is where we go today.

'Torchwood' to return?

Aiming for a new series?
After "Torchwood: Miracle Day" received mixed reviews from both critics and fans, it seemed as if a fifth series starring Capt. Jack Harkness would take, well, a miracle.

Now fans have a glimmer of hope, according to metro.co.uk. Chris Albrecht of Starz, which co-produced the 10-part series with BBC Wales, recently told Multichannel News:

"You know, Russell (T Davies) is so busy. Obviously, we're in touch with the BBC all the time. They are our partners on (new shows) DaVinci's Demons and Harem.
"We told them, we stand by ready for any news, but I think it would be a while before Russell came back to Torchwood.'
Davies put his professional life on hold in December when his partner, Andrew Smith, was diagnosed with brain cancer. Davies recently announced he is returning to work.

Lost 'Star Trek' script, intended for Milton Berle (!), claimed by CBS

Milton Berle as guest villain "Louie the Lilac" on "Batman."
The script walked among us ... briefly.

An unused "Star Trek" script from the original series is no longer going to be adapted by the people behind the web series Star Trek New Voyages: Phase II. No, the Ferengi did not put in a claim on "He Walked Among Us." Rather, CBS is blocking production of the story, the New York Times reported.

CBS says it owns the script by science fiction writer Norman Spinrad - and probably is right. Spinrad also wrote the popular original episode, "The Doomsday Machine."

"He Walked Among Us" was seen as a dramatic role for comedian Milton Berle. In the story, according to The Times:

His character is a well-meaning but messianic sociologist whose conduct threatens to destroy the planet Jugal. The crew of the Enterprise must remove him without disrupting the normal development of the culture.
Spinrad told startrek.com that he asked series creator Gene Roddenberry to drop the episode after producer Gene Coon “rewrote it into an unfunny comedy.”

Current executive at CBS say the network is “considering opportunities to offer licensed copies of the work.”

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #3

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #3

by Ken Parker

Among my criteria of excellent Sci-Fi movies I include strong visuals, a soundtrack that envelopes the viewer and high concept ideas that are both thought provoking and exciting. So many movies on my list have elements from these but also may have great stories, top notch acting and just that magic touch. I am also a sucker for dystopian depictions and commentary on society of today. One thing that I may have not mentioned as a criteria in some Sci-Fi movies is realism. Not only do I like seeing a movie that could be real but when a film goes out of its way to sell the setting and ideas without going too far, I am happy. Movies such as Sunshine, The Abyss and 2010 are examples of this realism.

When a film takes place in the future it may be harder to sell the look of the film. You can certainly push your imagination to accept that a ship can travel faster than light or that time travel is possible. When a movie presents realistic settings, concepts and characters, that is when things can get very interesting. My final three films on my list all excel at realism. There is a look of each that could exist in the future. The concepts are within grasp of a possible future.

When a film bases some of its ideals in reality while expanding on the wonderous ideas of alien life, space travel and artificial life, it really hits a sweet spot for me.

Doctor Who To Film In New York For Series 7

Here is some pretty cool news is that episode 5 of Doctor Who's Series 7 will be filmed in New York.  Episode 5 is, of course, the one where Amy and Rory leave the show while battling the Weeping Angels. This news was announced yesterday by Steven Moffat at the Official Doctor Who Convention.  The news was confirmed by Executive Producer Caroline Skinner at the convention also.  I find this news pretty exciting because I live near New York.

Also those lucky enough to be in attendance at the convention were given a sneak peak at Doctor Who's 7th Series.  That trailer will be available on the BBC Official Doctor Who website at 9am GMT.

The Hunger Games Review (Spoilers)

The Hunger Games – A Movie Review by Marie A Parsons (MantoniaP)

In an indeterminate future time, twelve outlying districts pay a horrible penalty. At least seventy-four years before the movie opens, these districts rebelled against the central Capitol, and failed. In an annual reminder of this treasonous act, and to teach the lesson that such rebellion would never again be tolerated, each district holds a lottery. One young man and one young woman are chosen from each district’s best and brightest age-range of 12-18 year-olds. These twenty-four young people serve as tribute, representing their district in a gladiatorial “to-the-death” exhibition. Welcome to the 74th edition of The Hunger Games.

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #4

by Ken Parker

Here we are within the top 4 and I have noticed that at one point or another each of the following movies has probably been my #1 movie.  In the early 70's this movie was there and in the late 80's a different one held the spot.  This may be the movie I have seen the most on this list.

More On The New Companion Jenna-Louise Coleman

There tons of new info and press reaction to the new companion that it's been a busy day reading it all.  So right now we don't know anything about the character that she will be playing but Steven Moffat had this to say about her character.

It always seems impossible when you start casting these parts, but when we saw Matt and Jenna together, we knew we had our girl. She's funny and clever and exactly mad enough to step on board the TARDIS.

It's not often the Doctor meets someone who can talk even faster than he does, but it's about to happen. Jenna is going to lead him his merriest dance yet. And that's all you're getting for now. Who she's playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters. Even by the Doctor's standards, this isn't your usual boy meets girl.

Sounds pretty cool and all.  You can read the official release at the BBC Dr Who website and some of the better press clippings at the links below the picture.

Our first look at Stephen Amell as CW's 'Arrow'

Arrow will be "darker and harder edged" - OK, we get the point.
Thanks to the CW, we now know what the new Green Arrow outfit looks like on "Arrow" star Stephen Amell. Pretty cool.

As for the pilot itself, director David Nutter says he is drawing on his experience from helming a certain other super hero series in the DC Universe:

“When I directed the pilot for Smallville, I knew that making Clark Kent relatable would be the key to audiences believing in him as a hero. Arrow is a different show — darker and harder-edged — but it’s the same core idea. We’re creating a real, believable world in which Oliver Queen can do incredible things. [Costume designer] Colleen Atwood’s great work on the Arrow costume reflects that effort.”

Marvel Brings Back Captain Marvel!! (But It's Not Who You Think)

Old Ms. Marvel

At Marvels "Talk To The Hat" panel at WonderCon yesterday Marvel announced a new Captain Marvel comic book staring Ms Marvel. That's right Carol Danvers will be shedding her Ms. Marvel persona and take on the mantle of Captain Marvel.  This is pretty cool but I bet those hoping for Mar- Vell to come back might be disappointed.  I'm just glad that they are giving Ms. Marvel another shot at a monthly book.  Captain Marvel by Sue DeConnick and Dexter Soy takes off in July.  Read more about it at CBR which was the source for this article.

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #6

When people think of Sci-Fi, many will probably think of Steven Speilberg as being a huge contributor to the genre. That may be true, but not on this list. You will see only one movie from him here. Sure, he was involved in many excellent Sci-Fi movies like A.I, Jurassic Park and Minority Report and shows up as Executive Producer for Back To The Future, but in my mind there is one film that is the definitive Speilberg Sci-Fi film and NO, it is not E.T.

Kung Fu to return? 'Snatch the sequel from my hand'

"Kung Fu" will tell a familiar story with a new face.
Actor/director Bill Paxton and screenwriter John J. McLaughlin have been working to bring the 1970s cult classic "Kung Fu," which starred the late David Carradine, to the big screen. Paxton recently told Twitch that he and McLaughlin are awaiting word - perhaps as patiently as Shaolin monks? - on a script that the submitted in January.

Paxton said he and McLaughlin watched all three seasons of the original show in order to get a feel for the original. "What happens a lot when people go back to redo a TV show to do a movie, a lot of times they don't pay a respect to the original thing - asking why was it successful in the first place. The fighting is important, but people remember the Shaolin teachings, that he would take so much and then start wailing."

Green Hornet, Kato still looking for sequel work

Two guys with lots of free time on their hands these days.
To no one's surprise, you should not expect a sequel to Seth Rogan's underwhelming "Green Hornet." The reason? Money, of course.

As explained by producer Neal Moritz to The Hollywood Reporter:
The problem wasn't that. The movie did almost $250 million and was actually very well liked, but we made the movie for too much money. One, we made it in L.A. for certain reasons, and two, we decided to go to 3D -- that added another $10 million. If I had done it in a tax-rebate state and not done 3D, it would have been considered a huge financial success for the studio. So we're not making a sequel right now.
By most accounts, Moritz is being generous in his praise of the 2011 film. IMDB rates the movie as a 6 on a scale of 10. Rotten Tomatoes is even less kind, with the movie coming in at 44 percent.

'Man of Steel' super spoilers .... OK, not so super

Henry Cavill flies into theaters as Superman on June 14, 2013.
You have to give the people at ComicBookMovie.com credit. When it comes to news about "Man of Steel," they dig and dig and dig some more. Rather than full-scale spoilers, their most recent efforts have resulted in a some smaller tidbits taken from a call sheet from the movie set.

First:
Okay, so the first scene involves Clark in a bar where loggers like to frequent. This is a dive bar, the customers are a surly bunch as they like to throw beer cans and such. Clark will be confronted by someone named Ludlow, and he'll have to keep his anger in check.
Second:
Alright, and now it's time for the fun stuff. Number five in the call sheet refers to Superman's father Jor-El. The following information takes place on Krypton and it appears as though Jor-El has been wounded in battle by a sword, which is also referred to as an energy lance. Number 11 in the call sheet is referring to Lara, Superman's mother, while number 46 might be baby Superman, Kal-El. Before Jor-El and Lara say goodbye to their child, Jor-El will infuse something into his heart.

Expect A Long Wait For Sherlock Series 3

You will find out in the far future how I survived my fall.

If it is driving you crazy trying to figure out how Sherlock survives the fall then it will drive you insane to find out that it will be quite a bit longer than you expected for Sherlock to return.  According to Beryl Vertue, who is one of the Executive Producers on the show, that "Filming will start in early 2013."  So that could mean that Sherlock might not return to our TV screens until late 2013 or even worse early 2014.  This is not all that surprising considering the how busy the two stars are as one is filming the Hobbit and the other is filming Star Trek.  Bummer but at least there is still a third series to look forward to.

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #7

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time

By Ken Parker

I have already talked about expectations when going to see a movie. Sequels will often try to capitalize on the success of the original by trying to capture some of the magic that made those movies popular. You would more often than not see the same characters doing similar things in similar situations. Many times the sequels are amped up a bit with more of everything to try to outdo the original. Other times the situation may be much different but keep the same characters. The object of the sequel is to be different enough for people to not feel they are watching the original and yet be as similar as possible.

The following is a sequel that really did not do this. Instead it took some brand new ideas and put the same characters into that different situation.

John Carter Movie Review

A Review of the movie John Carter by Marie Parsons (@mantoniap)

John Carter is a happy entertainment, and I recommend it. Set aside thoughts of the Burroughs novel upon which the movie is adapted, and just enjoy the movie.

I was predisposed not to like the movie, I confess. Edgar Rice Burroughs was one of my three favorite SF authors, growing up. I read all the Barsoom books, more than once, and recently re-read A Princess of Mars. I had visualized the characters in certain ways, I loved the flow of the story, and I wanted the movie to be true to the novel.

Sophia Myles in Spain! Coincidence or Not???

Doctor Who is currently filming in Spain and according to recent tweets by Sophia Myles she is in Spain also.  Hmmm.  Coincidence?  I don't know but it sure seems fishy to me that she is in Spain on vacation (nudge nudge wink wink) at the same time that The Moff and crew are there filming Dr Who also.  Let the speculations begin and form your own opinion after reading the tweets for yourself.

Just arrived in Malaga…but my bag didn’t. Bollocks to Easy Jet. Hope it gets here tomorrow.

More Dr Who Filming Pictures From Spain (Spoilers)

For those of you who love to look at Series 7 pictures of filming. Well..... we have some more for you.  These have been popping up all over the inter webs so I have know clue who to credit for them but enjoy them all the same after the jump.

A 'Journey' that Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson should avoid

The elephant in the room? This is a bad movie.
New Line recently announced that it will make a sequel to "Journey 2: The Moneymaking Island" (did I get that right?). After all, it's about to top the $300-million mark in global box office receipts.

Imagine how much money it would make if it was a good movie.

It isn't. I see many children's movies, thanks to my 11-year-old goddaughter. Some are good. "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," for example, was one of the most entertaining movies that I saw in 2009. "Journey 2," on the other hand, is one of the most disappointing films of a young 2012.

And I had low expectations.

Yes, it's a movie for children. But much like "The Game Plan" - one of my goddaughter's favorite movies (at least until she discovered "Twilight," but that's another lament) - also starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, it's a movie made for children by adults who don't seem to care.

For the most part, I blame the writers. In its own little fantasy world, "Journey 2" does not make sense. The details are not worth the time it would take to type them. In the end, you walk out thinking, "I could have done a better job with this story outline" - even if you are 15 years old.

Rock, you deserve better. Demand a stronger script, or at least one that follows it own rules. Your old friends at WWE are better writers. How about "Journey 3: The Rock Smells What Twilight Is Cooking and Kicks Its Candy Ass?"

Valiant Comics is coming back in a big way this summer. The once big time company of the 90's is returning with 4 of it's more familiar properties.  The will be releasing X-O Manowar, Bloodshot, Harbinger, and Archer & Armstrong over the course of 4 months starting in May. This is great news for those who enjoyed the books (like me) during their glory years of the early 90's.  I'm looking forward to these books and hope Valiant takes off again.

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #8

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #8

by Ken Parker

One thing that happens to me when I see movies over and over again – I start to appreciate them more and more. But eventually some movies start to become so embedded in my mind that I forget about them when thinking about my top 25 list, for example. The films are almost a given that they are in my best of the best lists. Four of the next eight films sort of fall into that category of being watched by myself so many times that I have become over exposed to them. Despite this, they are still part of my list and for most of them, are so important to my evolution of Sci Fi movie enjoyment that they reach very high on my list. Often I will watch these films when they are on TV but rarely do I sit down to watch them on disc. You will probably be able to figure out which movies I am talking about by the shear number of times I have watched them.

Just a reminder, I did mention in an earlier review that my estimates of the number of times I watched a movie are based on watching most of the movie (not just 15 minutes here and there) and the limited time within my life time. I have never kept a movie so close as to become obsessed with it that my numbers will reach 100 nor will I exagerate the amount like some people do. I do know people who have watched films many, many times and don't doubt some of these numbers. I do know some people who make it up.
