Doctor Who - Last Christmas Review (Minor Spoilers)

Doctor Who:
Last Christmas
By Steven Moffat

“Santa Claus does not do the scientific explanation.”

It’s Christmas and everyone is gathering together with friends and family to celebrate the festive holiday either for religious beliefs or not.  But most of all a huge number of people around the world celebrate Christmas with something altogether different in mind and that would be the annual Doctor Who Christmas Special.  In fact this is the 10th year in a row that Doctor Who fans will be watching a Doctor Who episode on Christmas day and this time will be treated to the first one with Peter Capaldi as The Doctor.   Last Christmas is also boasting a unique meet up between The Doctor and a certain resident of the North Pole.  But was it good as a Christmas pudding or will it be a Scrooge and give us a humbug.

Doctor Who - Last Christmas

Review by Ken Parker

Despite what you might think after reading my reviews, I really want to like Doctor Who. Any other series I would have stopped watching the show because of inconsistency in quality and embarrassing silliness. Unless I was watching some strange David Lynch nightmare or an all out spoofy comedy, I would never in a million years think I would see an episode with an army of Slinkys marching into a polar base and certainly never in Doctor Who. But alas, here we are.

Doctor Who - Jenna Coleman Confirmed For All of Series Nine

For all you Clara haters, there are quite a lot of you, will be happy to know that Jenna Coleman has been confirmed to be in all of Series 9 of Doctor Who.  Steven Moffat made that announcement last week at the launch for Last Christmas.

"Jenna is in all of the next series, which we’re delighted to reveal."

I'm happy that Jenna Coleman will be coming back as she and Peter Capaldi have great chemistry together.   So she will be in 12 episodes if they continue with the same formula as this year and that will also make her the longest serving companion of the new series.

Doctor Who - Last Christmas Preview Clip

Doctor Who - Big Finish Special Main Range Anniversary Release

Big Finish will be celebrating another anniversary in 2015 with the 200th release of their Main Range of Doctor Who audio adventures.  To celebrate the milestone they will be having a special three part story that will feature three Doctor's with companions from previous incarnations.  The party kicks off in April and continues into June with releases 198,199 and 200.  This story is the idea of script editor Alan Barnes and this is his reasoning of this interesting story.

‘For some time, I'd been thinking it was a shame we couldn't make more use of the first three Doctors' companions in the Main Range. Continuity permitting (or even not!), we can always have the Fifth, Sixth or Seventh Doctors meeting up with friends they said 'goodbye' to years before... but there have been a fair few School Reunion-type stories now, and they're great, but I couldn't help wondering: can't we do something different? Then I thought: what if the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Doctors turned up bang in the middle of earlier, unseen adventures – standing in for their 'proper' selves, who've gone AWOL for some reason or other...? Locum Doctors, if you will! ‘And that's what we've done!’
The first story is The Defectors written by Nicholas Briggs. It stars Sylvester McCoy with the Third Doctor’s companion Jo Grant and Richard Franklin  as Captain Mike Yates. The synopsis for this story is a different spin on the “base under siege” scenario, set on a remote island, but still involving lots of government and UNIT shenanigans.'

Then comes Last of the Cybermen written by Alan Barnes and stars Colin Baker with Frazer Hines and Wendy Padbury who are the Second Doctor's companions. The synopsis for this story finds the Sixth Doctor joining forces with Jamie and Zoe to explore a strange citadel that holds the secret of the Cybermen's ultimate destruction

The last story and the 200th release will be The Secret History written by Eddie Robson  Which stars Peter Davison, Peter Purves and Maureen O’Brien. The synopsis for the story is as follows.  The Fifth Doctor, trapped with Steven and Vicki in sixth century Constantinople, at last learns the reason why he's being dragged back into the lives of his former incarnations.

Doctor Who - Peter Capaldi on Last Christmas

The BBC Media Centre has released some interviews with the key people involved in this years Doctor Who Christmas Special.  Today is an interview with Peter Capaldi.

Peter Capaldi - Q&A

Everyone will be pleased to see the Doctor and Clara brought together again for this Christmas special. What does bring them together?

A terrifying festive dilemma forces the Doctor back to Earth to help Clara. Then a story unfolds which is quite unexpected – I can’t really say more than that.

How does filming the Christmas special differ from the series?

It’s all very festive and even though you’re shooting in October it does lull you into the festive spirit, because there are lots of Christmassy things around. There are snow machines all the time which is lovely but they’re noisy like lawnmowers or concrete mixers. We have Christmas lights, polystyrene icebergs - which is classic piece of set dressing on Doctor Who. There’s a roast dinner going on in Clara’s house and a big Christmas tree. There were also lots of tangerines!

What was your reaction to Nick Frost being cast as Santa? What sort of Santa does he play?

Doctor Who - Last Christmas Official TV Trailer

Doctor Who - Jenna Coleman on Last Christmas

The BBC Media Centre has released some interviews with the key people involved in this years Doctor Who Christmas Special.  Today is an interview with Jenna Coleman

Jenna Coleman - Q&A

What’s it like for Clara to be reunited with the Doctor in the Christmas Special?

She’s just really glad to be back with him. She’s dealing with the death of Danny Pink but happy to be back in the arms of the TARDIS again, and meeting Santa. A lot of the episode is about telling that adventure, and it’s about the Doctor and Clara resolving what they’ve just been through.

What was it like coming back to film the Christmas Special?

Doctor Who - Steven Moffat On Osgood's Fate and Orson Pink

In the latest Doctor Who Magazine Steven moffat cleared up some loose ends from Series 8 particularly with Orson Pink and Osgood.  Lot's of people who are fans of Osgood are hoping the Osgood that was killed was her Zygon duplicate. Well Steven Moffat had this to say about it is that the Zygon duplicate would have been to hard to kill and put up a bigger fight so in essence Osgood is dead.  So in the immortal words of Star Treks Doctor McCoy "She's dead Jim."

Now on Orson Pink and this is a pretty easy one to believe which I thought of and I'm sure many fans came up with this explanation themselves. It was another relative from his family and not a direct descendant of Danny as Steven Moffat explains.

“I can think of several explanations, but the obvious one is that Orson comes from another branch of the family. He knows about Danny’s heroic sacrifice, because Clara got in touch with the Pink family after the events of Death in Heaven (because you would, wouldn’t you?), and told them what he did, and why. And she gave them the little soldier, as a keepsake of a great man and a great soldier – and because she knows the toy soldier has to remain in the Pink family line. Now all that strikes me as pretty inevitable – that’s what would have happened – but I’m not saying it’s right. Nothing is actual till it’s in the show. Knowing how the season would end, we were careful, in never to define exactly what the connection was.”

So that is that and I can't wait for people to get confused when Missy shows up again in Doctor Who.

Space Travel in Cinema

Incredible just incredible - love this type of imagery

Mad Max: Fury Road - Official Teaser Trailer - Stunning!

Continuum Comes Back for One Last Season - 6 Episodes

Is this is the first word that we had that the show was even renewed?  You would think that they would have started shooting already.  Still, with only six more episodes planned for its 4th season, Continuum will be back and more than likely wrap everything up.  That is good because there is a lot to wrap up and thankfully this show will have a final ending and not just end in mid story.

This show has had a lot of excellent things going for it but I think it also has been largely directionless.  Hopefully they will put it all together for the final episodes. No word on the airing dates yet.

Doctor Who - Steven Moffat on Last Christmas

The BBC Media Centre has released some interviews with the key people involved in this years Doctor Who Christmas Special. Today is an interview with Steven Moffat.

Steven Moffat - Q&A

What can you tell us about the plot of this year’s Christmas special?

Well obviously as everyone knows from the end of Death In Heaven, it’s the ultimate meeting of Christmas heroes - Santa Claus meets Doctor Who. The buddy movie you’ve always wanted. In addition to that, it’s quite surprising - it won’t be what some people expect because it’s a thriller of an episode. The Christmas element is covered in the fairly notable form of Santa Claus and the elves and their sleigh. But the rest of it is very much Doctor Who – scary, in a polar ice cap base, scientists under threat. I keep describing it as Miracle On 34th Street meets Alien.

Viewers will be thrilled to see the Doctor and Clara brought together again - what can we expect from this and what can you say about what brings them together?

Doctor Who - What would be your dream Christmas?
