More Rumblings From Matt Smith On Leaving and Staying

Here are some more comments from Matt Smith whether he is leaving anytime soon.

"I just sort of take each year as it comes really. We've got all the rest of this year to get through and then we'll just sit down and review it from there and see where it goes. But I love playing the part and I love working with (writer) Steven Moffat...I think there will need to be a younger, cooler person than me - or maybe an older, cooler person, who knows? But I don't think I'll be doing it as long as Mr. Baker."

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #19

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - A Tie for #19

By Ken Parker

I always have trouble with these types of lists because as time goes on I remember movies I had forgotten about or have second thoughts on where a movie should be placed. This resulted in this particular list going from top 20 to top 25 and then ultimately with this ranking which is my only tie on the list. I felt both movies deserved to be placed in this spot.

SPACE:1999 AFTERSHOCK AND AWE
Writer(s): Andrew E. C. Gaska
Artist(s): Gray Morrow, David Hueso, Miki
Introduction: John Kenneth Muir
Editor: Paul Morrissey
Additional Contributors: Erik Matthews, Nicola Cuti, Nina Kester

160pp Hardcover

Based on the events portrayed in the SPACE:1999 pilot episode “BREAKAWAY” by Gerry Anderson, Sylvia Anderson, George Bellak, and Christopher Penfold.

A retro-reintroduction to science fiction’s lost gothic space odyssey!

SYNOPSIS:

The sci-fi classic series returns!

In an alternate universe where JFK was never assassinated, mankind has already suffered through World War III, unified into a single world government, and built a base on the moon by the year 1999!

September 13th: 1999 – An atomic accident causes the moon to be blown out of orbit and hurled into the unknown, the survivors of the lunar base stationed there launched towards their destiny across the stars. But what of the cataclysm and wanton destruction caused to the Earth in its wake?

This groundbreaking retro-reintroduction to the sci-fi hit series from the early 1970s begins with AFTERSHOCK, which follows nine lives who are forever changed by the carnage left in the moon’s wake. Told from the point of view of those left behind on a ravaged Earth, AFTERSHOCK explores the scientific, environmental, and social political repercussions of a world left with no moon.

The story continues in AWE, which adapts the pilot episode of SPACE: 1999 “Breakaway”, as seen through the personal logs of Commander John Koenig and Professor Victor Bergman on Moonbase Alpha -- expanded to include both new and unfilmed material, and utilizing the remastered art of comics legend Gray Morrow as a basis for this revolutionary retelling of a sci-fi classic.

Based on the classic science fiction television series SPACE: 1999 – and set in the continuity of the original series, AFTERSHOCK AND AWE steals a glimpse at an alternate history of mankind, and jump-starts humanity’s eventual destiny far out in space.

Doctor Who Insider (US Mag) Is No More

In what is no big surprise to me the  North American Doctor Who Magazine Doctor Who Insider will be no more.  Issue 9 will be the last issue which came out last month is the last one.  This magazine wasn't all that good as it seemed to be a very much watered down version (and highly inferior) to the UK magazine.

Here is a statement from Panni email Customer Service rep Kristy Syson

I am sorry to advise you that Dr Who Insider has ceased publication effective from Issue 9. Please be assured letters are on the way to our subscribers explaining this matter and offering either a refund or transfer to Dr Who magazine. Once again I apologise for any inconvenience and disappointment caused in this matter.

And now for something completely different - science fiction from Monty Python

There's no word on whether any dead parrots will be appearing in the film.
What could possibly bring the surviving members of Monty Python's Flying Circus back for a film project? Would you believe science fiction?

Pythonite Terry Jones will direct his old friends in "Absolutely Anything," a sci-fi farce that combines animation with live action. According to Variety:
Plans are for filming to begin in the U.K. this spring, with the Pythons voicing key roles as a a group of aliens who endow an earthling with the power to do "absolutely anything" to see what a mess he'll make of things -- which is precisely what happens. There's also a talking dog named Dennis who seems to understand more about the mayhem that ensues than anyone else does. Robin Williams will voice the character.
"It's not a Monty Python picture, but it certainly has that sensibility," Jones told Variety.

The script was developed over the past 20 years by Jones and Gavin Scott.

Jones, who co-directed 1974's "Monty and the Holy Grail" with Terry Gilliam and was the sole director on "Life of Brian" and "Monty Python's The Meaning of Life," said Gilliam, John Cleese and Michael Palin have agreed to the project. Producers are still trying to sign Eric Idle.

The original Python cast has not appeared together since the Aspen Comedy Festival 1n 1998, where they were accompanied by an urn that allegedly contained the ashes of late member Graham Chapman.

More 'Torchwood' in 2013?

Maybe we'd get more "Torchwood" if we held a gun to someone's head.
We know Captain Jack Harkness is immortal. His beloved "Torchwood"? We're not so sure. Mixed reaction to "Torchwood: Miracle Day" - well, I liked it - leaves the future uncertain for the captain, Gwen and the rest of the crew.

Actress Eve Myles, who plays Gwen, was asked just that by CultBox:
What’s the latest you’ve heard on the future of Torchwood?
"As far as I know at the moment, everything’s still very much on hold. Russell [T Davies] has things happening in his personal life.
"John [Barrowman] is very much on the same page as me, in that if and when they need us, they can just pick the phone up and we will be there before they’ve even put the phone down, because it’s something we love doing.
"Nothing’s going to happen in 2012, I know that much for sure. But who knows what will happen in 2013. Maybe a movie, to kinda draw a line under it.
"That’s the thing about Torchwood, every series we’ve changed our format. We’ve always had a gap in between, so fingers crossed, because we’ve got such an outstanding loyal fan base. They deserve Torchwood to go ahead with something else to draw a line under it, for the fans to have a bit of closure.

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #20

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #20

By Ken Parker

Some of my favorite sci-fi movies are mysteries. They have an almost Twilight Zone feel to them as the story unfolds and a major reveal happens. Most movies have some kind of story that reveals answers as they go along. A movie like The Abyss sets up some strange happening and the audience gets to see the answer by the films end. The following movie has this type of mystery that includes a very good pay off.

I don't always like cut and dry answers and as you will see in this and many reviews, endings don't have to be spelled out all the time.

My Thoughts and Speculations On Matt Smith Staying Or Leaving Dr Who

Is this gonna be coming our way at the end of series 7

After all of yesterday’s hub bub about Matt Smith staying or leaving I thought that I should comment on the whole ordeal and share my thoughts.  Well one thing we know for sure is that one day Matt Smith will not be The Doctor.  That is a guarantee like death and taxes.  Yep, Matt Smith will not be The Doctor one day.   Come on it is no big secret every actor from Hartnell to Tennant has left the role. Matt Smith is no exception and he will be gone someday.  But is that day rapidly approaching?

Evangeline Lilly On Her Hobbit Character

Evangeline Lilly has done an interview where she discusses her made for the Hobbit movie only character the elf Tauriel.

Yes, she is a warrior. She's actually the head of the Elven guard. She's the big shot in the army. So she knows how to wield any weapon, but the primary weapons that she uses are a bow and arrow and two daggers. And she's lethal and deadly. You definitely wouldn't want to be caught in a dark alley next to Tauriel.

So then Tauriel must be involved with the dwarves being captured

I think basically what you're asking is if she's in the film very much. She's not in the first film very much. She comes into the first film near the end, and has a very small part to play. Her role in the second film is much more involved. Although, I have to say, when I first read the scripts and took the job, she had a lot less going on in the second film. I think the role is becoming a bit more demanding than I had expected it to be. There's a lot more for me to do now, which is a lot of fun, but it's a little more pressure.
For fans of the book will know that there isn't a Tauriel in the book.  She will most likely be in the second Hobbit film where Peter Jackson will take liberty with filming what happened when Gandalf takes his leave.

Matt Smith Talking About Staying and Leaving

Here is an interesting interview from last nights NTA's that I found on Digital Spy's website where he says he is here for the future but he has one year left of Who.  You can take this both ways but it is still pretty cryptic what he means.

Matt Smith and Karen Gillan Win at NTA's

Lost in all the hub bub of the Matt Smith coming or going news was the fact that Matt Smith and Karen Gillan both won awards at the NTA.  The pair won in their category for Drama Performance: Female and Drama Performance: Male.  Matt Smith joins fellow Doctors Christopher Eccelston and David Tennant in winning that award.  Congratulations to Matt Smith and Karen Gillan.

BBC Source "Matt Smith Not Leaving"

With all the confusion going around by Matt Smith the Knights have done some digging and sort of came up with an answer thats a tad bit cryptic.

A bbc source said that they have a heavy duty schedule planned for the near future to allow for filming breaks but as far as we know Matt Smith has not announced any intention to leave Doctor Who in 2013
So take that for what you will as it does appear that something is up.

Breaking Now! Matt Smith To Leave Doctor Who??? Updated

Speaking back stage at the NTA's Matt Smith has told the Radio Times that he has one year left of Dr. Who.  It is assumed that series 7 and 8 will be filmed back to back.  Here is the Tweet from The Radio Times

Now this is either speculation or fact no one knows but it should be interesting to see what develops from this.

Now there is this tweet from the BBC

BBC Ents News Team
Matt Smith says backstage that he has "no plans to leave" Doctor Who and he has no idea who his next companion will be #NTAs

So this all confusing as there are multiple tweets saying he is staying and going.  So who knows what is going on.

Haywire Movie Review (Mild Spoilers)

As I sit around fighting a cold I had the urge to go out and occupy my mind with something other than reading cold medicine labels.  So I embarked on the 20 minute journey to one of the three mega movie complexes of overpriced candy and popcorn or other food that just adds to your waistline.   There I was struck with a decision to make.   Which movie should I see?  Well I had three in mind and went with the one that I felt might not be around that long.  The movie that won the mind battle royale of awesomeness was Haywire.  Yes I said mind battle royale of awesomeness.  You should have seen the looks I was getting while I entered my mind palace to have this mental debate.

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #21

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time - #21

By Ken Parker

Welcome to my top 25 Sci-Fi movie list. With four visual movies behind us we now look at a less visual movie and more of an action film. The 80's and 90's were dominated with these types of films and at times a sci-fi movie without wall to wall explosions and gunfire was a welcome change. This film was an early blueprint for these full blown action films but unlike its sequels, has more heart and story than bullets.

Doctor Who Show runner and Torchwood creator is returning to CBBC for his second childrens show.  Following the success of The Sarah Jane Adventures Russell has created a new show called Aliens VS Wizards.  The show is created with former The Sarah Jane Adventures writer Phil Ford and it sounds pretty good.   The show is about two 16 year old boys, a wizard, and a friend who is a scientist who ban together to fight off alien invasions.  Here is what Russell T. Davis says about the show:

The show's a wild, funny, thrilling and sometimes scary collision of magic and science fiction

Is Talia al Guhl In Batman: The Dark Knight Rises. Apparently So Says Actress

According to 12 year old actress Joey King she says she is playing a young version of her.  As she states.

I play young Talia al Ghul. I can't give too much away because I promised Mr. Nolan I wouldn't say anything. There are too many secrets about the character and the movie.

So it seems that  Marion Cotillard could be playing the adult version of Talia al Ghul for those who don't know is the daughter of Ra's al Ghul and the mother of Batman's son Damian who is now the current Robin in the comics books.

Doctor Who: Dark Horizon

Here is the new hardcover novel to be released this July 7th in the UK.  It features the 11th Doctor and appears to be taking place during the time of Vikings and is penned by Jenny (JT) Colgan.

Here is a blurb about what the book is all about.

"Now, you may or may not have noticed, but we appear to be on fire..."
On a windswept Northern shore, at the very tip of what will one day become Scotland, the islanders believe the worst they have to fear is a Viking attack. Then the burning comes. They cannot run from it. Water will not stop it. It consumes everything in its path - yet the burned still speak.

The Doctor is just looking for a game on the famous Lewis chess set. Instead he encounters a people under attack from a power they cannot possibly understand. They have no weapons, no strategy and no protection against a fire sent to engulf them all.

Add in some marauding Vikings with very bad timing, a kidnapped princess with a secret of her own and a TARDIS that seems to have developed an inexplicable fear of water, and they all have a battle on their hands. The islanders must take on a ruthless alien force in a world without technology; without communications; without tea that isn't made out of bark. Still at least they have the Doctor on their side... Don't they?

A thrilling new adventure starring the Doctor, as played by Matt Smith.

Being Human (UK) Series 4 Trailer

Gina Carano as Wonder Woman?

Ready to rumble in the Amazonian jungle?
Add MMA fighter/actress Gina Carano to the list of stars who would like to play Wonder Woman - assuming the oft-delayed project ever gets off the ground.

Carano, starring in the current Steven Soderberg-directed "Haywire," was asked about the role of the Amazon princess in an interview with Jennifer Vineyard of Vulture:
People have suggested you play Wonder Woman.
I know! We even had a Wonder Woman reference in the film — did you catch it? One of the cops said something to me like, "Oh, chill out, Wonder Woman." And I thought that was so funny. I said to Steven, "You know there's a little rumor about me and Wonder Woman." And he said mischievously, "Oh, that's interesting."
"Haywire" marks Carano's acting debut. She plays a secret agent who hunts down the traitors who betrayed her. And it's an impressive list - Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas and Michael Fassbender.

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of all Time - #22

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of all Time - #22

by Ken Parker

You may notice that the vast majority of the films on this list are not recent films. Only three are from the 2000's. There may be a couple of reasons for this. One is perhaps Hollywood is not making that many good Sci-Fi movies. I think to a degree this may be the case but I tend to let a film stand the test of time and give films that I have seen and experienced for a longer period of time more emphasis.

Anyhow the following film is one of the post 2000 films and this is actually the most recent film on my list.

Steven Moffat hints at extra episodes of 'Dr. Who'

Don't make Steven Moffat sic his friend on you.
In a brief interview with RadioTimes (1 minute and 11 seconds, to be exact), "Dr. Who" showrunner Steven Moffat offered a tantalizing glimpse of the Time Lord's future.

First, he tells the interviewer that the show will have "a long run" when it returns in the fall. From the sound of the interviewer's voice, you would think he had just won the lottery. Moffat, in turn, plays with the interviewer like a cat playing with a mouse.

"You're saying, maybe more than 13 parts?"

"Am I? Did I say that?"

After another question, Moffat points out that, including the Christmas episode, the season will be "at least 14" episodes. He then continued to tease the interviewer - and us - in response to a question about the 50th anniversary of Dr. Who in 2013:

"I think, honestly, and just saying this as a Dr. Who fan myself, and knowing a certain amount of what's coming and making some of the other stuff up, there will never be a better time, I promise you, I promise you, for so many reasons I can't talk about yet, there will never be a better time to be a Dr. Who fan, I absolutely promise that."

Karen Gillan traveling alone - she's single, guys!

Have boyfriend, will travel?
In real life, "Dr. Who" actress Karen Gillan apparently is looking for a new, well, companion. According to multiple sources, the actress recently spoke in the past tense about her relationship with photographer and longtime boyfriend Patrick Green.

Gillan, 24, was promoting her new TV project, "We'll Take Manhattan," about a model's love affair with a photographer when she was asked if her six-year relationship with Green is similar. Digital Spy quoted Radio Times as saying she responded:
"We never really did any of that. It's quite healthy to keep certain things separate in a relationship, I think."
That's good enough for the Internet, including The Sun and other sources, to conclude that the woman who plays Amy Pond is once again searching for her Rory.

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of all Time - #23

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of all Time - #23

by Ken Parker

I have always wondered why people like certain movies and not others. Sure people have their own likes and dislikes and these may change over time. I love the visuals in movies but can also really enjoy a cerebral tale. Of course an all out action film is always fun. I feel that the initial viewing is the single most important element in determining at least my interest in a film. Take, for example, E.T.. This film is outstanding and worthy of many people’s top lists, but it is not on mine. The reasons for this include the fact that when I watched the film when it came out, I was underwhelmed. Since that time I have grown to appreciate and enjoy the film much more but that initial experience was so important in my view of it today.

The following film is a movie that I did not see in the theater initially. I often made bad choices when picking which movie to see and was planning on seeing either The Abyss or Leviathan. I, of course picked Leviathan (which is nowhere near my top 100 let alone top 20) instead of The Abyss. A year or two later I caught up with it on cable and, well, here it is!

Sherlock: The Reichenbach Fall Review (Spoilers)

Sherlock
The Reichenbach Fall
By Steve Thompson

“Every fairytale needs a good old fashion villain.”

It is here we see the showdown between Sherlock Holmes and Jim Moriarty.  Finally a solution to the “Final Problem” is here and we are the lucky ones that get to see it.  But are we the lucky ones?  Was The Reichenbach Fall worthy of all the hype that it builds up during the past week?

New Prometheus Photo!!!

This movie I believe will be a dark horse for one of the best movies of the year. It looks really amazing and spooky.

Mark Gatiss Confirmed Writer For Dr Who Series 7

According to a Doctor Who Magazine Mark Gatiss has been confirmed as a writer for the next series of Doctor Who.  In fact he confirmed it himself when he filled in for Steven Moffat this month in Production Notes.   He also gave us three hints about his story and they are Meat, Klaxon, and Vienna.  He joins Steven Moffat, obviously, and John Fay as the only confirmed writers for series 7.

Tom Bakers Big Finish Dr Who Adventures Released

For fans of the 4th Doctor will be happy to learn that he has finally arrived in a Big Finish Audio Adventure.  The first of Tom Bakers stories have been released in the story Destination: Nerva.  Also available is a box set of Lost Stories.  A six disk collection that has two stories The Foe From The Future and The Valley of Death.  Tom Baker will be accompanied by Louise Jameson who played Leela in the classic series.   Should be good to hear The Doctor and Leela back together again so search them out and give them a listen.

New Hobbit Photo With Bilbo and Sting (Not The Rock Star)

Here is a cool photo of Bilbo with his sword Sting.  Can't wait for December to see this movie.

Sherlock Series 3 Confirmed

For those of you that are worrying about Sherlock Series 3 not happening you can rest easy.  Last night after the airing The Reichenbach Fall Steven Moffat was on Twitter and tweeted this great piece of news.

: Yes of course there's going to be a third series - it was commissioned at the same time as the second. Gotcha!"
So there will be a third series and the world of Sherlock fandom can breath easier now.  So bring on the adaptation of The Empty House (die hard fans will know what I mean).

Check Out Pioneer One

Here is something worth checking out.  An independant series about the return of a lone Soviet survivor from a mission to Mars.  Of course this ignites cold war tensions and such plus a lot more.  What is cool about this scifi series is that it is shown on exclusively on the internet.  Another thing that is neat about it is that they get their funding by fans who donate money to them if they like what they see.  For more info about Pioneer One check out their site.  Plus you can also meet them at this years ICON convention.

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of all Time - #24

My Top 25 Sci-Fi Movies of all Time - #24

by Ken Parker

This could be a controversial pick or perhaps more accurately, a controversial omission. The following film is often placed in the horror category but because of the amount of sci-fi elements, I felt it belonged here.

Before I continue I want to mention something about my estimates on how many times I have seen a movie. First off, the number of times someone has seen a film doesn't dictate how much they may like a it. Sometimes one may be content in only seeing the movie a few times or even once. People generally do see a movie more often when they like it but that is not always the case. Concerning my amounts – to the best of my knowledge they are rough estimates that are relatively close but you may notice the numbers may be low compared to other people who claim to have seen certain movies hundreds of times. My estimates are based on the number of years the film has been out and how familiar I am with the movie. Some movies I see every couple of years while others rarely. These numbers are watching the movie completely and not just watching a few minutes here and there. Oh, and very few of these have I seen in the theater, most have been on TV.

Now for #24

Is Sophia Myles The New Companion?????

Well she could be. Since this is the time of speculation and another of Steven Moffat's cryptic tweets she just very might will be.  Steven Moffat mentioned the former Spooks, Underworld, and Doctor Who guest star in one of his tweets this week saying

Right EVERYBODY who follows me, go and follow @SophiaMyles - spin that fireplace. NOW. I'll explain later. Or not.
Of course @SophiaMyles = Madame De Pompadour from Who, and IS Lady Penelope from Thunderbirds.

Well this is idle speculation and could mean nothing.  In fact it could not even be Doctor Who related but for another project that Steven Moffat could be working on.  In any sense this is pretty exciting times trying to guess who might be joining Matt Smith for his travels in the TARDIS.

Finally A Cool Idea From Marvel. Marvel To Release Captain America and Hawkeye As The Beginning Of A New Team Up Book!!!

Finally something that I can get excited about from Marvel Comics.  They are doing a monthly ongoing pairing Captain America with Hawkeye. CBR has the full story and is reporting that this book will continue with the numbering of Captain America and Bucky when the Bucky storyline finishes up.  This is pretty cool as these two characters are a couple of my favorite Marvel characters.  The book will be written by Cully Bunn and the artist will be Alessandro Vitti.  The Hawkeye arc will begin in April and when that finishes up someone else will team with Captain America. So in essence it will be a Captain America Team Up Book.  Full story here.

DIAL H – Writer: China Miéville. Artist: Mateus Santoluoco. The first ongoing series from acclaimed novelist China Miéville, this is a bold new take on a cult classic concept about the psychological effects on an everyman who accidentally gains powers to become a hero.

G.I. COMBAT – Writer: J.T. Krul. Artist: Ariel Olivetti. Featuring the return of a classic DC Comics series, THE WAR THAT TIME FORGOT, along with rotating back-up stories and creative teams – including THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER, with writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Dan Panosian; and THE HAUNTED TANK, with writer John Arcudi and artist Scott Kolins.

THE RAVAGERS – Writer: Howard Mackie. Artist: Ian Churchill. Spinning off from TEEN TITANS and SUPERBOY, this series finds four superpowered teens on the run and fighting against the organization that wants to turn them into supervillains.

I'm looking forward to a couple of the titles but some of them I don't have an interest in.  I will miss Blackhawks and Hawk and Dove as I was enjoying those books.  I guess I was the only one enjoying them as they got shoved to the scrap heap.  You can read the full DC Comics press release here.
