Episode 3
Wasting Time

2077 Kiera and the protectors raid an apartment complex
looking for terrorists. We hear Kiera say “I’ve got a bad feeling about this. “
She tries to scan the unit from the outside with her implant, but is
unsuccessful because the room is shielded. Blasting into the room, they see a
man passed out on a mattress and arrest Sonya Valentine: a former military doctor
and a part of the bioenhancement program run by the military.
2012
As Kiera briefs the Vancouver Police Department on the
members of Liber8, the group is facing a crisis. Leader, Travis Verta’s (Roger
Cross) health is failing fast and tension mounts between the remaining members.
Sonya has killed two men using an instrument that has bored into the back of
the head.
Kiera and Carlos, with Alec’s tech, discover these men
have a genetic mutation in common. She explains it is like a super steroid. The
human growth hormone could be synthesized into a serum to transform one into a
super soldier. She may have connected this to the program Sonya was a part of
in the future.
Kellog seems to be playing both on sides of the fence. He
approaches Kiera early in the episode about an alliance. Having fallen for the
lifestyle in the present, he wants help to stay, meanwhile her offering intelligence
on the movements of Liber8. However, with Travis succumbing to withdrawals from
the super soldier drug, He and Chen are both vying to impress the group and
become next in line for leadership.
Carlos and Kiera following a “lead” to the next target arrive
at a university kitchen, where said target works, and run into the pair. Carlos,
who has arrived prior to Kiera, is knocked out by Chen. The protector tags
Kellog , who was making good his escape, with a tracker. She confronts Chen and as the battle ensues
he manages to short circuits her suit with a loose hot wire. Chen grabs Kiera’s
weapon and, having pointed it backwards, fatally shoots himself.
With the suit out of commission, Alec helps Kiera track
Kellog to Liber8’s safe house. She finds the house abandoned by all but Kellog
strapped to a chair. After much negotiation on his part, Kiera releases him. As
he rises, a click brings her back to the night of Sonya’s arrest and a similar
click. As the protectors elevate the stuporous man, Kiera’s bad feeling is
justified and an explosive goes off. Realizing Kellog’s situation was a repeat,
the race out the back door and dive into a swimming pool as a ball of flames
pass over head.
The episode closes with Kiera retrieving the piece from the
time travel device from the evidence room of the police department.
In “Matter of Time”, we begin to see the breakdown of
LIber8. With Travis’s health circling the drain, tensions are high. What I like
about this is we start to see character development in the individual members
and their relationships with each other.
We are also getting to know Alec’s family. While close to
his mother, he spends the majority of his time in his computer laboratory in
the barn. This sets him apart from his step father and step brother, who are a
part of a grass roots anti technology/corporation movement which is in
opposition to Alec’s own beliefs and lifestyle.
Keira’s tech once again enables her to quickly solve the
case at hand. However, in losing the suit, she is facing a disadvantage she
isn’t used to. Again, we get snippet of detail in the daily life of
2077. Kellog reveals his love for the abundance of meat in this time, leading
me to believe vegetarianism is the predominant dietary practice. And apparently
Rock, Paper, Scissors is a thing of the past.
As I said earlier, I like the increased character
development. Also as more of the future is revealed, it gives pause for thought
about events taking place in our own time and where they might take us.
